“Alright, then, I’ll explain further why I can’t stand her.”

Kaze stretched his arms. Usually he never bothered to delve into the details of his disdain towards his former owner, but he’d make an exception for Shirou. After all, the kid was one of the few people Kaze actually respected, probably from how much he took after Akihiko.

“I’d been with her for years before she started with this whole sage thing,” he stated. “And I can tell you that the way she acts is just a mask. The girl is a spoiled little brat with no ambition who doesn’t put anyone before herself. She acts like a goody little princess so we’ll all do as we’re told. She’s so two-faced it’s disgusting.”

The wakizashi paused as if to think. He decided to say one more thing; after all, Shirou was an inquisitive one, and not telling the full truth wouldn’t be enough for him, so for now he relented.

“…At least, that’s how she used to be. It’s something about herself I know she always wanted to change. Whether it worked or not, I can’t say; I stopped hanging around her the minute I was given this form. The way I feel, though, is that if she truly cared about us all, she wouldn’t’ve given up her position the second she had someone to shove the responsibility onto.”

“She didn’t shove the responsibility onto me, I had a choice and I took it. You make it sound like she gave birth to me and my sister just so she didn’t have to do any work anymore. My mother would never do something like that. Also, if anything, you should be glad she took on the position in the first place or you wouldn’t even have a human form and just be an ordinary sword.”

Seishirou paused to let out a sigh. Talking to Kaze was always exhausting for him.

“Now, I’d really appreciate it if you would stop bad mouthing my mother in my presence. That and stop trying to get me and my sister into doing things that would upset her.”

“What’s wrong with birds? Sure they can be loud, but it shouldn’t be a problem if you give them enough attention. We live with like a million people, Onii-chan.” Mizuki pouted. She was getting tired of putting up with Seishirou’s weird one-pet-only mindset.

“Animals need more friends than just their owners. Natsuki is lucky he has a kitty he can be friends with now. And also you’re way too formal.”

“You do realize that if I didn’t have him trained Natsuki would surely chase the kitten around the house right? Dogs and cats typically aren’t the type to be ‘best friends’ anyways.” He sighed.

“Living with the sword warriors doesn’t mean there’s a need for more pets. Besides, are you going to take care of all of them? I know I’m not down for it. Also we have Saniwa responsibilities to attend to that need to come first.”

“We should get birds, too,” she added. “Something big and colorful that can be friends with Natsuki and Shiori.”

“What part of ‘I only need Natsuki’ do you not get? He’s seriously all I want or need and I’m not the slightest bit jealous.” He groaned from agitation.

“Birds are probably one of the worst pets to have. Do you seriously want to put father in a bad mood by getting those? Besides, you just got a kitten why do you need more pets? Natsuki doesn’t need any friends.”

Mizuki pouted. She knew her brother preferred dogs, but even a dog person could appreciate how cute the little black puffball on her shoulder was. Seishirou must just be jealous.

“You’re just jealous that you didn’t get to come with us, aren’t you? I got to snuggle all the animals.”

“What makes you think I’m jealous? I have no need for other animals when the only one I want in my life is right here.” He gestured to his dog Natsuki, currently standing by his side while panting.

Seishirou had just returned from his daily jog and began stretching when he heard his sister’s voice. He turned to face her and spotted the kitten she was referring to. A kitten? Seriously? He hoped Natsuki knew better than to chase it around.

“Yeah... Sure...”

“Five years is hardly that much of a difference,” Kaze replied. “If memory serves, you’re the same age little Yuki-tan was when she bought me. Well, when her parents bought me for her. She wouldn’t have the citadel or any of her shiny toys if it weren’t for Gramps’ money.”

The wakizashi shook his head, crossing his arms. His gaze drifted back upward to make eye contact with his former owner’s son. He was barely past puberty and was already taller than the average Japanese man. Kaze wasn’t short, but at this rate Shirou was going to tower over him when he hits adulthood.

“I couldn’t care less about that freak, trust me,” Kaze continued. “You’re one of the few things she didn’t screw up. But,” he continued, followed by a yawn, “if sake isn’t your thing, I know where your old lady keeps some more Western-type drinks.”

Seishirou remained stoic as he listened to him speak. While he usually was able to find answers for things, all these years he still couldn’t understand why Kaze was full of so much unnecessary hatred. Sure his mother didn’t wield him, but that didn’t seem like a worthy reason to him.

However, Kaze’s insult towards his mother really didn’t sit well with him. His usual default stoic expression turned into a frown. He was very protective of his family and didn’t like hearing any of them disrespected in such a way, especially when it comes to her.

“How dare you disrespect her in such a way? No amount of backhanded compliment is about to make me let that slide. Just because she hasn’t wielded you doesn’t mean she deserves to be treated like that.”

“You’re not even close to being right. I’m not nineteen, I’m fifteen years old making me not old enough to drink.” He groaned. “I’ll pass. Oh, and if this is another attempt to upset my mother, you’re going to have to try harder.”
