The words did little to comfort her, and it made her feel guilty. She knew they were right, at least in this instance…Steven always looked up to her. And yes, there were certainly moments where she noticed and it made her feel the way she wanted to.

But that kind of feeling never lasted. It was always so fleeting, and it was exhausting to almost constantly feel like she had for so long. Tears gathered at her eyes again, and her head lowered as the guilt was building up more and more. “I’m…I’m sorry-”

And now, she was crying, audible sniffles and sobs forming in her throat. Her hands clung tightly to the front of her shirt again, and she subconsciously curled in a little on herself.

Ruby was prepared to say something else, something about ROSE, but that’d most likely just make things worse than they already were. So, she simply sat down beside the taller Gem and hugged her.

She was silent, her gaze drifting toward Sapphire, the expression on her face asking something along the lines of ‘what should we do’. Ugh, she felt horrible for yelling earlier. This was just fantastic.

Sapphire just stared between them both, meeting Ruby’s gaze with a look that showed she had no idea what they should do to help her in this case. She felt like the answer was right there, but she could not see it.

That was....concerning at best.

“Pearl, stop apologizing, its okay.” she began, immediately regretting that comment. “Look, you are special Pearl, we all appreciate you around here. Steven does, Steven loves you especially Pearl- just like Rose did.”

“But I don’t feel like it!”

She was immediately silent for a moment, almost recoiling at how she raised her voice at them. The emotions that were threatening to bubble over now seemed to currently be bubbling over, and she didn’t want them to. She pressed back against the door, sliding down until she was sitting upon the floor.

“I…I feel useless, on my own. I need others to…to make me feel like I matter. Like I mean something. But even then…it just doesn’t feel like it.”

She squeezed her hands together, looking down at the floor. “I was so desperate to fuse because, for a few minutes…I could feel it. I could feel like everything I wanted to be.”

“Don’t you GET it?! You’re strong in your own way!” Ruby shouted, though she wasn’t steaming anymore. Just… irritated. Upset. Not angry. She looked at Sapphire and sighed before glancing back at Pearl.

Slowly, she approached the taller Gem and carefully laid a hand onto her shoulder. Her voice was quieter than before. “What about… when you’re around Steven? H E doesn’t make you feel like you matter? Like you’re wanted?”

Sapphire did not react visibly to any of the yelling, looking between the two of them as necessary. She listened to them both go on, not stepping in until it seemed like everyone else was finished.

“She has a point, Pearl.” she began. “Steven looks up to you as a pillar of strength from what I saw.” she noted. “Fusion is not there for you to use it to power-boost yourself. It is so much more then that.” she explained. “To us personally it is anyways, its--”

She fell quiet and decided to mirror Ruby’s action and put her hand on the other shoulder, brushing her hair from her eyes to stare at Pearl with a visible expression.

“I…” She had to turn away, fingers curled to grip at her clothing, almost so hard her knuckles were white. She was barely holding back a tidal wave of emotions right now, tears managing to gather at her eyes despite her efforts.

“I didn’t want to feel…feel weak, anymore,” she murmured, closing her eyes and still turned away from the two smaller Gems. “I wanted to be strong. I-I wanted to…feel important. And confident. And needed.”

Ruby, at first, was too furious to speak. She simply let Sapphire hold onto her, not bothering to move as she continued to glare at Pearl. Her teeth grit together again, her hands clenching and unclenching as she tried thinking of what to say next.

But… hearing Pearl’s words confused her. Did she seriously think she was weak? Unimportant? Unwanted…? The small red Gem drew in a ragged breath, forcing herself to at least calm down a little. “That’s foolish.” Her voice cracked and she averted her eyes, “You are strong. Important. And much needed.“

Sapphire felt some of the tension (and heat) leave Ruby’s body, so she released her and moved to her side instead, locking their hands after a moment. She looked up at Pearl, shaking her head slowly, as if denying what she was saying.

“Ruby is right Pearl, you’re strong, just in different ways than us or Garnet or whoever.” she explained, her tone still calm. She released Ruby’s hand after that, sure that it was not a good time for this. They had their own problems to talk about, but now was about Pearl, not them. “You’re a strong person, and you’re very important to us.”

“W-What? I care about it! I just…”

Oh, would the other even listen to her if she tried to explain herself? She didn’t seem pleased before when they were still fused as Garnet and she tried explaining the reason behind her actions.

She barely registered what the two were doing to the temperature in the room and how it was fluctuating from hot to cold, her hands tightly clutching at her stomach as her mind raced.

“I-I just…I just wanted-”

“What did you want, Pearl? Huh? Do you have any IDEA how me and Sapph felt after it was over and done with?” Ruby snapped, hands still curled into fists. She exhaled a shaky sigh, her eyes flying shut.

“We both felt USED.” She opened her eyes and shook her head, “Why did you do that?! You hurt the both of us. You hurt Garnet!”

Sapphire did not want to raise her voice, but at the yelling she frowned, ice beginning to form on the back wall. “Ruby!” she forced out, sound upset.

“I-I’m sure you had your reasons Pearl, and they are valid.” she addressed the other gem, still grasping onto Ruby. “She’s just angry, she’ll burn herself out eventually and this will all pass.”

She immediately tried to back up, the now closed door behind her blocking her attempt to get away. She swallowed, looking at the two smaller Gems before her as they spoke. They so rarely fought like this, and knowing she was the cause of it sent a pang of guilt through her being.

“I-I’m sorry,” she sputtered, hands out in front of her and face showing clear distress. “I can…leave, if you’d like-”

Ruby gritted her teeth together tight, her body becoming tense when the blue Gem grabbed hold of her. She narrowed her eyes, steam rising from where she was standing. It was clear what would happen if she stood there much longer. Her hardened gaze was focused on Pearl.

“I’M being ridiculous?! You’re kidding me! Sapphire… do… do you not realize how bad she messed up?” For a split second, she looked at her other half, her expression unchanging. She glanced back at the taller Gem and scowled. “YOU don’t care about fusion.”

“You don’t need to leave.” Sapphire insisted, then frowned at Ruby. “I know there were mistakes, but getting mad is not going to do anything- except maybe burn the building down.” she reminded, feeling more than a bit annoyed herself, even if it did not show.

She kept a tight grip, even when Ruby’s skin got too hot under her hands. Her own annoyance caused the air to begin to chill a bit, counteracting with the heat. “You need to calm down Ruby, yelling like this won’t make anything better.” she assured.

As soon as Pearl opened the door to step into the temple, the sight of the two smaller Gems made her freeze in place. Garnet being split up very rarely meant a good thing, and right now, she figured that this not good thing was most likely entirely because of her.

“Oh. Ruby. Sapphire. What a, um…pleasant surprise to see you two.”

It definitely was because of her. The small red Gem glowered at the taller, her hands balled into fists down at her sides. She stormed toward Pearl, her eyes blazing with fury.

“Pleasant? You call THIS pleasant?! Yeah right, drop the act already!” Ruby knew this was only going to end badly. But she couldn’t calm down, she tried to. Calming herself down wasn’t going to happen. She felt angry enough to do something d r a s t i c.

Sapphire was trying to calm Ruby down with logic. They were a team, fighting did them nothing, but she was not having any of it. She knew it upset Ruby, it upset her too, but she saw the outcome of all of this, they needed to move on.

Of course thats when Pearl walks in.

Instantly Sapphire is standing, grabbing Ruby from behind and holding her back. “Ruby, stop.” she said, her tone stern. “You’re only making things worse by doing this.” the blue gem insisted. She looked up at the larger gem, frowning. “I apologize, shes just being ridiculous.”

Pearl sat on Steven's bed, staring at her reflection in the tv, ignoring the cobwebs in the corner. First Steven dies, and now she loses Garnets trust. Everything was getting worse, and she thought the only Way to stop it, was to stay there.

Sapphire slowly made her way into the room, inching forward awkwardly. She needed to be calm, even if it hurt. “Pearl…?”

Pearl noticeably flinched when she heard Sapphires voice. She was pretty much scared of Garnet at this point, even if she was split up. Hearing one of them talk to her put her on edge.
