Nancy Drew: The Secret of Shadow Ranch, 2004
🔍 one location per game 🔍 ↳ the secret of shadow ranch: shadow ranch
Wait, why are there no bedrooms on Shadow Ranch? That always bugged me when I was younger, but I never figured out why lol
In the book the house is described as having a long portico/covered porch that bedrooms are accessible from. So they’d have to go outside to get into a bedroom. Here’s some examples of it:
“She said hello to Nancy and shyly followed the others along the portico to Bess and George’s room, which Nancy was to share. Another door led into the main hallway of the house” Pg. 23
“Just after midnight she awoke suddenly, startled by a noise on the portico. She sensed someone pausing at the door to listen. Then stealthy footsteps moved on. (…) Quickly she arose, put on a robe and slippers, and cautiously opened the screen door. No one was nearby, but at the far end of the portico she saw a dark figure slip into the kitchen.” Pg. 29
Nancys room being accessible from outside is actually very important to the plot since her room is trespassed upon multiple times by someone who couldn’t openly walk into the house.
I’ve read this book at least a dozen times, I can’t believe it took me so long to make the connection to the game.
Bedrooms in Shadow Ranch
I’ve often wondered where Nancy sleeps at Shadow Ranch (not to mention the Rawleys and the ranch hands) but I may have an answer!
Here’s a glimpse of part of a wall you can only see through the window. This appears in only one or two frames in the front living room. This piece of building is unaccounted for, and it indicates there being more living space in front of the ranch.
In Arizona, it’s not uncommon for a piece of property to have casitas (small, self-contained houses or rooms that may or may not be attached to the main house). My theory is that if we were permitted to walk out front then we might see additional living space that has a separate entrance from the house. Boom.
r u fcking sure about that
I’ve posted about this before but check out dirk-valentine-lives post called Bedrooms in Shadow Ranch. It shows a screenshot of the living room in the Rawley’s house and another wing of the house.
I’m replaying SHA for the zillionth time. I’m standing in the living room & it just occurred to me that there are no doors leading to other parts of the house (bedrooms, bathrooms, etc.).🤔
Three Settings with Great Atmosphere (in no particular order): SHA - 2/3
Surprisingly I’m not a huge fan of ranches or horses, but I just love this game to death. The game just has the perfect feeling with the music and the beautiful scenery for it to work, especially when added with all the chores and characters that fit in with their environment! My favourite ND games are always the ones that have a specific theme like this one, as opposed to just being revolved around “Ooh Nancy’s in Hawaii!”
Seven Indoor Locations (in no particular order): SHA’s Ranch House - 3/7
Ah my favourite game! I’m actually not too into ranches or anything, but there’s always been something about this room that’s piqued my interest. It just looks like a really nice place to hang out and chill with some friends.
There’s something so comfortable and relaxed about the ranch house and its breathtaking views that makes me want to stay there forever.
Some more from one of my all time favorite ND games! Just love all the characters and the story (though it is a bit corny... still hits me in the feels a bit). But there's no horse bc I didn't have it in me to paint a horse, I'm sorry 😢
And also... you can collect more eggs than that, Nancy!

From Book to Game #10: “The Secret of Shadow Ranch” (Original Nancy Drew Hardcover 5 - revised text)
nancy. girl... have you never taken a chemistry class or used a temperature probe in the kitchen? they make thermometers up to allllll kinds of temperatrues
*laughs in 115 degree heat in Phx*
I fucking refuse to believe this. I refuse. Nancy is from the Midwest and that thermometer is approaching the high 90s–aka summertime in the Midwest?????? Nancy “Unobservant” Drew strikes again
"I didn't know thermometers went up that high."
Nancy? Have you never read the numbers on a thermometer before?
