Calm down about ‘Split’

Everyone is flipping their lids about the movie ‘Split’, making strong claims that it is “literally demonizing DID and personality disorders”, and how it’s “gross” and “problematic” and “fetishism” (???) that someone with DID is being portrayed as an evil kidnapper.

But has anyone stopped to think that maybe it’s not a movie about the person with DID being a monster, but rather a story about a man who has one ‘evil’ personality in his system? Maybe everyone who’s ripping the trailers to shreds should watch them carefully, and acknowledge the fact that all of the man’s alters are not bad. Some seem a bit rough, perhaps, but they don’t seem evil. It’s the one that they call the beast that’s the villain.

Would you get mad at a movie where there’s a band of 24 people, and one of them is a homicidal kidnapper? No? Then why are you so pissed off about this one? All it’s doing is showing that when you have DID, you’re not in control of your alters. You can’t control what they do, what kind of a person they are, or who they want to hurt.

Am I alone here?
