Excuse me in advance for acting all elite and shizz xD but I'll always take pride in the fact that I chose this show when it was nothing. When only a few of us, scattered across the globe, thought of watching a show with no ratings, no promotions, a single very basic poster, no hype. It was this tiny thing, our small weekly dose of happiness. Our Monday-Tuesday therapy.

I'm so grateful to have been there seeing it grow and flourish till this point. As an OG audience, the motherly instincts and the urge to protect the show and the cast at all costs is so real I'm just T-T

Live watching Lovely Runner has been a glorious experience, with all the anticipation, no spoilers, 124312 theories, detectiv-ing, inferencing, group chats, dms, edits, essays, character/scene analyses and all those sleep deprived nights and days because time zones are a thing. It allowed me to meet some of the sweetest, warmest, most sensible people from different corners of the world. It allowed me to love Wooseok and Hyeyoon and everyone in the cast and crew who wanted to tell a beautiful story and went above and beyond given the means available to them. It allowed me to unleash my inner unhinged fangirl that I thought I had long left behind. I just. have. a lot of. feelings.

But also to the people who'd get to experience it for the first time: you are in for a ride. I wish I could do this all over again, but I also don't because an experience like this should be once in a lifetime imo. I really hope y'all obsess over it as much as I do. I hope you cherish this because it's a show well worth cherishing for an eternity.

My theory for Sol's halmeoni/granny:

"Father Time" is a famous personification of time, often depicted as an old man with a white beard who holds the key to time itself.

Here we have "Grandmother Time", an old woman (aka Sol's halmeoni) with grey hair who holds the key (aka Sunjae's watch) to time (aka free will for Sol to be able to mentally travel to a place where she can change bad circumstances).

Halmeoni's dementia forces her to mentally travel through time which includes multiple timelines. The upside is she knows what has happened and tries to help. The downside is it mostly prevents her from being lucid in the present.

I don't think Sol's halmeoni is an old version of Im Sol. Firstly because there is no physical time travel in this story, only mental time travel. Secondly because that theory is a variation of famous Robert Heinlein scifi story which involves alot of craziness to make it happen.

It is funny though that Sol's halmeoni throws Sunjae's watch into the stream at the end so no one else could have it, exactly like how old Rose throws away the diamond into the ocean at the end of Titanic. This writer has nods to several older movies, including Basic Instinct and The Terminator.

Speaking of… I like the simplicity of the serial killer being like The Terminator (aka a relentless baddie ‘destined’ to kill them) just like the VHS tape Sol showed Sunjae to explain her time travel situation where the hero’s motto is “no fate but what we make” and Sol & Sunjae then change their fate.

some shows are simply poetry in motion: and lovely runner is one of them. i'm a poet: i see poems wherever i go; the rhythm of lyric looking out from an actor's face — and i saw it in every frame of lovely runner. during this scene, the soft rhapsody of sunjae's eyes as he stared at sol's photo... the poetics of yearning placed in his expression, the mute memory of longing — all of it just sings, carries its own stanza.

sol at the streetlights in ep7, looking at sunjae on the billboard, his name on her lips — and at that very moment he passes by in his car, as if to reassure her even unknowingly; that he will always be in her orbit. the detail in the color of every umbrella: black on the bridge for sunjae's depression, blue at the high-school to denote miraculous hope; yellow at their first meeting for purity, happiness and light.

every look is a line of poetry, every touch an agent of meter. i'm simply in awe. 💙💛

So I can't stop thinking about the way both Sol and Sun-jae cover the other with an umbrella because it's so romantic but it's also kind of their whole problem?

Usually the umbrella trope is giving an umbrella or getting close enough to the other person that you can share, but both of them hold the umbrella over the other person, leaving themselves wet. It's an ultimate act of service, but it also leaves them unprotected.

And this is exactly what both Sol and Sun-jae when it comes to the other, Sol tries to protect Sun-jae at the expense of her safety and vice versa.

It's romantic, but it keeps getting them killed.

Is Seon Jae corny?

One of the biggest charms of Lovely Runner for me is how it portrays a romance that is youthful, goofy, foolish and yet touches your heart in the most sensible and mature way possible. It doesn't forget it's a romcom at heart and serves us just that, so going into the show expecting a different genre is just unfair to the show (and yourself because you are the one setting yourself up for disappointment imo).

I'm not a big fan of immature childish romance devoid of any substance but that is not what we see here, despite Seon Jae being 19yo (or 20 or 34 yo). There's youthful anticipation, excitement and emotions but somehow Seon Jae's character (and Im Sol's character too, although she's always been 34yo in the main narrative) manages to transcend the notion of age and time with what he feels for Im Sol, the extent of it and the way he acts when it comes to her. Romance today is calculative and is often done in moderation, which is not necessarily a bad thing, because it is essential to learn to love ourselves too as we love someone special, but for both Im Sol and Seon Jae, loving themselves is also intrinsically connected to loving each other. Im Sol learns to appreciate life through loving Seon Jae, Seon Jae loves Im Sol because he appreciates what life has to offer.

This scene, for instance. I've rambled about this in the past too. It always warms my heart to see how, in all the timelines, he never gives up on life itself due to Im Sol not reciprocating his feelings/not remembering him. The guilt/heartbreak, longing and lovesickness are palpable in all versions of Seon Jae across all timelines but every time, he chooses to move forward in life (despite his heart being stuck in time with his Sol-ah), embracing everything life has to offer him. One of the things that becomes evident pretty early on in Lovely Runner is Seon Jae loves life. He may struggle sometimes but he doesn't think of it as a chore or burden to live on. He has things he cherishes, people he hangs out with, his dreams, aspirations, pain and struggle outside of Im Sol. He is not a pushover, he has stuff going on, he has a life. And he's not someone who'll casually say things like "I'll die for you" to anyone just to impress and get them to date him. Such grand statements don't usually make much of an impact on me as a viewer either but here, it somehow just works? Perhaps because we know he loves his life and wouldn't give it up no matter how hard things get, except for when he, his first and only love, part of his soul, is in crisis--tested by fate and time and death--and he is adamant about not letting it mess with his happiness, just like he wasn't ready to give up swimming despite Im Sol's warnings and his existing injury. That is the only time he'd make an exception: choose to live a short, worthwhile life, than live a long one devoid of any happy memories or love. It is not his childishness. In fact, he is doing what many of us can never, ever do. And perhaps that's why it doesn't sit well with some of the viewers; he complicates how we define love, happiness, fulfillment these days.

And come to think of it, he doesn't really say he'll die for her. He says Even if I die trying to save you, it's okay: it's a sad thing, Sol-ah. it's painful, yes, but it's okay. I might be worried for the remaining 14 years of my life, but that's because I'll have very little time to love you, to be in this feeling, to cherish the moments I make with you. I'll be sad that I won't see my first grey hair with you or be with you in so many of your big milestones in life, but it's okay. I'll try to make the most of whatever we get, now and tomorrow.

His sadness and heartbreak comes not from not being able to live his life to the fullest, but not being able to live his life with her. That exact same sentiment is conveyed by the final 2023 Seon Jae too, who doesn't even remember Im Sol or any of his old timeline versions and yet says the same thing.

The 2009 Seon Jae doesn't say 'I WILL die trying to save you'; he says 'if', there is a conditional. Even when he's aware of the impending doom, he doesn't give up on his life, on the 'if'. The guy with that face that has accepted a death that is yet to come, with eyes brimming with tears, with a heart determined to live hoping for an 'if' until then… when this guy makes such cheesy claims about his love and death, it's no longer an empty exaggerated promise. It hits a lot harder and leaves me momentarily breathless. That claim, stemming from the inherent human instinct to just want to be happy, and that non-calculative, selfless, pure kind of love, is exactly the thing I signed up for. That proclamation—simple, corny—is pain wrapped in momentary happiness, and my heart sinks, thinking just how fast he had to grow up in that short span of moments.

Ryu Seon Jae is like a North Star—he may not shine the brightest, but he shines bright enough in the same way, consistently, in every timeline we see him in. He is the star you could identify even in the sea of a million stars. Because that's how distinct his persona is. He may be corny and a loser, but he is corny and a loser exclusively for Im Sol, not in his life. That's the best kind of corny and loser one could find.

i can totally imagine 'sonagi' becoming sunjae's lullaby for their little baby daughter, after sol and sunjae finally get married.

when sol is tired, sunjae will stay up nights to soothe their baby to sleep, softly crooning 'sonagi' to her; because it never fails to calm her down. it's her parents' love song: the baby adores it even when she's too little to understand why. she'll continue to love it all her life.

"i sang this for your mother once," sunjae strokes his little daughter's head. the baby gurgles contentedly. "now it belongs to you too; because you are the rain's gift to both of us."

"someday," sunjae gently curls his hand around his daughter's tiny thumb. "someday i will sing it at your wedding; and hope the man you marry will love you just as much as i will always love your mother."

One of the best things about Lovely Runner is that Im Sol is the worst time traveller ever. She doesn't even try to act like her teenage self. She doesn't have a plan beyond "fix the future" and just stumbles around trying whatever. She doesn't seem to have a single thought about possible downstream consequences. Tae-sung figures her out almost immediately. You'd think she'd want to keep her wits about her, but no, Im Sol frequently wanders around extremely drunk in the past, having fate kisses and whatnot. She's the most clueless time traveller in fiction and somehow she keeps getting it right.

I've seen people going "but what about butterfly effect" and I was like bruh do you think Im Sol really cares? She's so hell-bent yet clueless that time itself ends up changing its' rules to accommodate her smh.

since I’ve been seeing posts that says “people need to talk more about Kim Hyeyoon and she doesn’t get as much recognition as Byeon Wooseok”. I agree with the former statement. As an international audience we really need to talk more about how amazing Kim Hyeyoon as an actor is, and as a person because she’s already an established actress in South Korea. So it doesn’t really make sense to me that these two’s “popularity” is being compared. Also instead of posting that she needs more recognition, if you really want to promote her more, make edits of her on tiktok, insta, tweet about her or show your love for her on all social media platforms.

Her nickname is “acting genius” Kim Hyeyoon. if you’ve been watching kdrama for a long time (I am, I’ve been watching kdrama since 2006) you’d know that not a lot of actors have been given this nickname by Koreans themselves. Hyeyoon is an established actor and is well loved and recognized by Korean general public. Internationally Hyeyoon’s fans are growing(I am one of them, I recently stan her)as well. Wooseok’s popularity on the other hand is rising both in Korea and internationally. from what I’ve heard he has been gaining recognition for his acting in 20th century girl and strong girl namsoon and Lovely Runner established that for him.

If you go to Hyeyoon’s wiki you’ll see all the acting awards she has won from major korean acting award shows. Baeksang arts awards best new actress for her role in ‘sky castle’. blue dragon film awards best new actress for her film ‘girl on a bulldozer’. and ‘extraordinary you’ has long established her acting in youth dramas.

Lovely Runner was made because of Kim Hyeyoon. Here is what Lee Sieun the writer said “i wrote the script with kim hyeyoon in mind. i never thought she would actually take the role, but when we cast her and she accepted, i was so happy i screamed. i think the starting point lovrun was so loved is because sol came to us.”https://x.com/fallinbeen/status/1796707851169329391?s=46

Senior actors, directors, fellow actors, staff she has worked with and even extras who have worked with her had nothing but praises for her acting, professionalism and the way she treats people, saying how she’s a good person(I am older than her but I am definitely learning a lot from her).

Erasing Sol's existence to Sunjae's memory is unnecessary.

Hear me out.

If Sol knew this or if Sol figured this out, maybe she no longer needed to erase herself from Sunjae's memory. If that happens, then we will have shorter version of Lovely Runner or maybe more fluffs.

Here I go. So first, let's talk about timelines. I separated the timelines into five.

OG Timeline - In 2023, Sol is paralyzed from the "accident". Sunjae was depressed and filled with guilt; Geum did not pursue his dreams and he became snobby and unhappy. Sol and Geum eomma have a burnt scar; Hyunjoo is single and her life revolves around Sol; and lastly, Inhyuk has a strained relationship with Sunjae, his best friend.

First jump timeline- In 2023, Sol is still paralyzed and Sunjae is still dead. However, unlike the original timeline, the photo booth picture, which was taken after Sunjae's match appeared at the crime scene.

Second jump timeline - In 2023, Sol remembers her missing memories from a traumatic experience. Sol is no longer paralyzed and Sunjae is alive. Sunjae and Sol dated for a day then Kim Young Soo attacked Sunjae and got comatose.

Third jump timeline - No version of 2023 since Sunjae died in their first year of college and Sol travelled back in time.

Fourth jump timeline - In 2023, Sol is alone. Taesung became a cop and Sunjae no longer remembers Sol. *The rest is history*

Let's discuss what I mean about this. If only she knew this, then the amnesia trope would not happen.

Before I begin, we can all agree that Kim Young Soo is just a psychopath who kills and never lets go of his prey. Once he has taken an interest in you, he will chase you as long as he can reach you. Sol is the unfortunate victim. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time. In my understanding, the victim of Juyang Reservoir incident should have been Im Sol. However, she escaped and lost her memories due to trauma. It was portrayed as a car accident because that's what only Sunjae knew. Since he was the sole witness of the incident despite not knowing what really happened, Young Soo still saw him as a threat. This is why he was the first one Young Soo killed in 2023 because Sunjae is the sole witness of what happened to Sol despite only knowing it was a car accident. (Assuming that Sunjae did not kill himself)

Sol really has no idea what has happened. She accepted the CEO's statement that Sunjae killed himself that's why in her first jump, she only focused on saving Sunjae (and might as well avoid the car accident). However, when she returned in 2023, she was still paralyzed but Sol can change the timeline and as proof, the non-existent photo in the original timeline appeared in the first jump timeline of 2023. However, that still doesn't change that Sunjae is still dead.

In the second jump timeline, Sol missed her bus stop and stopped at Juyang Reservoir because she overslept. This is where she got some of her memories about the abduction. She realized that Sunjae saved him. When she was waiting for the taxi, a taxi cab appeared out of nowhere. The driver saw Sol alone in the bus stop and when he was about to approach--a drunkard appeared and pestered Sol. Thanks to that drunkard--the taxi left. When Sol tried to get away from the drunkard, Sol fell into the water and lost her phone where Sunjae saved him, she remembers how Sunjae saved her in the original timeline, After that, Sol lost her phone and we never heard of that drunkard. The next day, a dead body in the Juyang Reservoir appeared. (It was said that is an angler or a foreign angler and the drunkard looks like an angler)

This incident is what I call the "meeting point". Sol never changed this part that's why the 2023 of her first jump timeline left her paralyzed because innocent Sol was meant to miss her stop, get abducted, escape, and get saved by Sunjae. The second and third jump timeline was the continuation of Sol's first jump timeline.

The reason why they were hunted by Young Soo--Sol became the prey of Young Soo and Sunjae, being the guy who is always there for Sol became a threat to him. As long as the meeting point of Sol and Young Soo never changes, Sol will always be hunted and killed.

To solidify this theory, in the fourth timeline where she can no longer travel back in time since Sol never took the watch of the dead Sunjae in the third jump timeline, like how Sol evaded Sunjae; she may also evade the Juyang Reservoir that's why she was not hunted by Young Soo. If she knew that she just needed to evade Juyang Reservoir and the driver then, she no longer need to erase herself from the memories of Sunjae.

Like how Sunjae said to Sol, (not word for word but) "the reason why fate does not change is not because it is inevitable but because that person likes the decision." This applies to Sunjae and Kim Young Soo.

In all honesty, this is the first time that i want the leads to become a couple, not right now but someday, like binjin. I really like them together and i feel like wooseok is a good man and if ever they'll become a couple he would treat hyeyoon right because she deserves it.

I've never felt this for any other on-screen couple because of the heartbreak(theirs and mine haha) of breaking up, it never really crossed my mind to ship the actors in real life. Kim Hye Yoon and Byeon Wooseok really did something to me.

After years of watching kdramas, I'm experiencing a lot of first times because of lovely runner and I'm not complaining.

My Lovely Thoughts on the Kdrama 'Lovely Runner'

I'd read a comment somewhere that nicely summarizes the show- "It wasn't perfect, but it was perfectly satisfying." And that's why I love it so much; the show made me FEEL so gosh-darn happy 🙂

I didn't really mind the bad guy, because he was simply a tool, the human embodiment of the dreadful fate Sol was trying to save Sun-Jae from. If the stakes were not so high, (i.e. life & death) their sacrifices would not have held as much weight (For instance, when Sun-Jae gets stabbed, he holds onto the killer's hand, to ensure he does not go after Sol; only after seeing her safe with the cops does Sun-Jae let go and smile in relief *sniffs*)

And I am a sucker for the specific brand of amnesia they showed here, where one party cannot remember their past memories, but still feels that magnetic pull towards the other without understanding why. I thought it was really well done. I remember getting so excited when they repeatedly hinted at him regaining his memories, it made the angst all the more delicious. Because the payoff they were setting up was glorious!

I also liked the simple (seemingly vague) explanation about how Sun-Jae regained his memories. The time travel in this show is more magical/ fantastical, rather than science-fiction-y. I don't need to know the technicalities. Their love was so strong that it changed their destiny. That's good enough for me.

I tend to prioritize how a show makes me FEEL, over technical stuff like plot structure or logic. (For instance, I adored 'King the Land' which had no real plot, the drama's focus was on how 2 attractive people fell in love and navigated their relationship) And this drama's shining moments were SO good, I was quite forgiving of its occasional missteps.

Sol and Sun-Jae's love made me believe in old-school, once-in-a-lifetime, meant-for-each-other, Sol-mates kind of love. Which is hopeful and heartwarming. BRING ON THE FEELS! (P. S. Check out the deleted scenes for more AWW-worthy moments!)

The reason I re-watched it immediately after it ended, was to truly enjoy their squee-worthy moments without having to worry about whether they will get their happy ending or not. And to pick up on stuff that I'd missed the first time. (Like watching Sun-Jae's facial expressions/ body language during the radio contest in the first scene)

I cannot recall the last time a drama made me feel the way this one did; with me scrolling through forums to read other fans' thoughts, squealing over the sneak peeks before the new episodes came out, how magical the leads' chemistry seemed, how suitable every single track in the OST was (do look up the translation of the lyrics, they all tie into/ foreshadow the plot!)

TLDR: I just have a lot of feelings about this drama, okay? ❤

This just occurred to me:

Even though she's lived multiple lives without a disability, I really think that impression would have stuck, which is why he thinks is perfectly normal that she's staring at him with heart eyes but she starts to think that something is wrong with her face when he looks at her for too long. Because she spent 15 years with people staring at her because she was "wrong".

i adore the textures of lovely runner: the soft light stemming from both sadness and beauty.

especially this scene in ep. 12: sweet; and bitter all at once. sol knows this is her last night with sunjae before she has to let him go: to leave the warmth of his life.

she doesn't want to go away without telling him her feelings. "i like you," she says — i want you to know you were all i ever wanted. i don't want to leave without you knowing how much you meant to me. how much your affection mattered. i want you to know that i care — that i have always cared and always will, even when i'm no longer with you.

sunjae's response is entirely selfless — meant to wash away all of sol's fear regarding his destiny. "i love you, sol;" he says — i love you no matter where i go or where we end up. i love you no matter what happens to me. don't be afraid of losing me: my love will always be with you. it will always last.

both their confessions are meant to liberate each other — to wipe away worry; fear, apprehension. always, always, looking out for each other.

and the slow intensity of their kiss afterward: all that desire dancing between their lips — their wish that this night could last forever. could never end.

maybe i'm breaking my own heart, but i wonder what sol thought in the timeline after sunjae died on that cliff — as she watched him sink beneath the water.

did she regret not telling him she loved him?

did she think: "forgive me, sunjae-ah, for letting you die without telling you i loved you. for letting my last words to you be a lie. i just wanted you safe. all i ever wanted was to keep you safe."

and she tore apart her own love; her own time — to keep him safe.

to keep him alive.

and sunjae remembered every single thing she did, turning fate's fabric inside out in his love for her.

what other love story could possibly compare?

The thought that you exist is so divinely blissful in itself that it is ridiculous to talk about the everyday sadness of separation...what does it matter? since my whole life belongs to you (LtV) I'm cooking up a theory/scenario on OG Seon Jae's death in the OG 2023 timeline and plan to post that soon-ish, but before that. I genuinely think the universe keeps doing this on purpose by flooding me with OG Seon Jae posts every time I decide not to think about him anymore. I've seen at least four posts on him since yesterday. What sorcery is this.

We know he didn't jump off the balcony,

but the fact that he was sure he was going to retire after this.

the fact that he considered their comeback stage his last stage ever.

And that it truly was, unbeknownst to him. His absolute last stage. His absolute last performance.

the fact that Sonagi wasn't even on the concert setlist but he performed it, as if as a final tribute, an homage to his love, to her.

[look at his veins?? his eyes?? the way he is this close to screaming and falling apart? the way his face contorts as if in sheer pain and anguish and hurt??]

Every time I look at that face, that BROKEN BOY who thought it was ALL his fault. The boy who had mustered up the courage to finally interact with the girl he's liked over a smile, an umbrella and a candy, only to cause her her biggest grief in life. The boy who knew his love would eternally be unrequited because he would never dare to appear before her as a figment of her traumatizing past that he was to be blamed for (he wasn't but who will tell him that).

He knows all he has of her is his memory of that smile, the candy and that umbrella.

He knows he doesn't exist for her. Not in the sense he desperately wishes he would.

Which is perhaps why he later finds it "funny" that Im Sol is such a dedicated fan of him as an idol. Her cherishing him, supporting him, loving him.

But not loving him the way his heart desperately longed for her to love him.

It was fine. He didn't deserve to be forgiven and be loved by her. He wasn't that fortunate. He couldn't dare to dream such an impossible dream.

Even if OG Seon Jae had managed to survive and retire after this concert, you bet he'd still keep singing Sonagi on his own time and again if not everyday. Anything that lets him take a trip down the memory lane, because this boy breathed Im Sol's memory her smile her light as if it were air.

The reason this song still remains my ultimate favorite out of them all is not just because Woo Seok's singing here is phenomenal, or because the lyrics and the composition make my heart ache in the most beautifully painful way possible, but because it is not just a song. It's a story, a tale of a boy who fell in love with a girl for the smile she brought to his life, the kindness she radiated, the love she blossomed in his heart for all eternities. It's a confession--of love, of regret, of guilt. It's a plea hidden in a melody.

Reading the translated lyrics for all the Eclipse songs and oh boy was Original Sun-jae both very depressed and very poetic.

and the melody is so weirdly upbeat!

i'm back to fixate on this moment, again.

look at how sunjae's expression completely transforms once he realizes that sol DOES love him as much, (if not more than) he loves her. that he's not just a problem to be rid of, for her; not an uncomfortable experience, or a traumatic memory.

he's wonderstruck at this epiphany — you can see his whole face soften, his mouth tighten as he chokes back tears, his eyes sweeten (and sober) into dark honey. the only girl he's ever loved actually loves him BACK: has gone against fate to try and save him.

what is death in the face of such commitment?

i marvel at the spare beauty of this confession: it's not ornate, or flowery, or overly elaborate. it simply is — just like sunjae. just like his love for sol.

"please keep liking me," he says. "if i die saving you, that's fine with me." such plain, earnest sentences — yet staggering in their immensity. this is the simple, sweeping grace of sunjae's confession — it doesn't need to be dressed in pretty words. all it needs is to exist.
