âHappy birthday, cuz!â called my cousinâs voice from across the apartment when she heard the toilet flush and the bathroom door open and close, signalling that I was up, mobile and ready to take on the day. She was in town to see friends, but for whatever reason, couldnât stay with them. And I was cheaper than a hotel room, so guess who was crashing on my couch for a weekend.
âItâs not my birthday and you know that.â I said as I walked, bleary-eyed out into the hall. Why so chipper?
âOh, I just wanted to thank you for putting up with me this weekend, and with the idea I came up with, I assume youâd think your birthday had come earlyâ
As I turned the corner, I was greeted by the sight of my cousin in naught but panties and stockings, bent over the couch and looking at me.Â
âremember those games we played when your family visited us every summer while we were growing up? All those nights we stayed up, whispering secrets and telling ghost stories? I never forgot. You were the first one who ever touched me. I never played doctor with my brothers. Just you.â
âI do remember, but we were just KIDS. thatâs what kids do. I mean, weâre not even related by marriage. Weâe the same blood. This isâŠâ
âI almost kissed you the summer before you movedâ She said. My heart jumped. âYou went too far away to make the trip anymore. I cried when I got the news. I always regretted not being brave enough to kiss you. No other boy has made me feel like that, and now Iâm making up for lost timeâ
I stopped and thought. Iâve had girlfriends, but whenever I compared the actual relationships to anyone, who did I compare them to? Who was I closest to out of any of them?
âPlease, cuz. Iâve saved it for you. Please take itâ
That as all I needed to hear. Her friends called about four hours later and asked where she was. Boy was her face red.
