Boston Zine Fest exhibitor #3: Esther S White

Esther is a printmaker, textile artist, and arts organizer based in Northampton, MA. Sister Sister Books is a collaborative publishing project run out of her home studio, where she has a photocopier, laser printer, and paper cutter. Trevor Powers is her most frequent collaborator. We like to do projects that experiment with book design and editing strategies. Sister Sister Books also serves as the imprint for her curatorial project, Fugitive Arts.

She’ll have a number of titles from the past year including the comics anthology Future Thought Collection Volume 2 and a recent poetry anthology inspired by an art exhibition, Piecework. She hopes to debut the next volume of the Sister Sister Split Series at BZF, which features the work of two artist-musicians in each “split” book.

Tell us a little about yourself and where you’re based?

My name is Esther S White, I’m a printmaker, textile artist, and arts organizer based in Northampton, MA. Sister Sister Books is a collaborative publishing project run out of my home studio, where I have a photocopier, laser printer, and paper cutter. Trevor Powers is my most frequent collaborator. What are some non-print related things that inspire you or you’ve been interested in lately?

I’m a new parent, and all the experiences that go along with that are really rocking my world. Time has taken on a whole new meaning. 

What is some of work you will be bringing to the fair? Any new or recent releases/work we can look forward to seeing?

An Interview with Trevor Powers

Trevor Powers (b. 1985, Burlington, VT) is a visual artist living in Western Massachusetts. 

1. Why photography?

Because I am not very good at drawing or painting, and photography is the only artform that I can create what I envision (sort of).

2. Where do you do your work? 

My workspace is in my apartment where I live with my partner Annie, and our dog Stevie. My workspace is downstairs and her’s is upstairs, and Stevie’s is on the couch or wherever he can be most in the way.

3. What is your favorite image right now? (not yours)

This photograph by Irina Rozovsky has been on my mind for a long time.

4. What is your favorite image right now? (yours)

I just scanned this image last weekend (shot earlier this summer). It’s a totally raw scan, but I think it’s my favorite image right now.

5. What is the worst photo you’ve ever taken? 

I have taken a very large amount of bad photographs.

In 2008, I spent the entire year shooting a lot of 35mm color film for a project that turned into Life Is Full of Possibilities. If you take a couple thousand photographs you will most definitely get a nice clean edit of 30, but that means you will have an extraordinary amount of bad pictures (both technically and artistically speaking). When I displayed this project, I included every single photograph that was taken that year. I believe that some of the worst photos I’ve ever taken were on display there.

6. Who is your favorite photographer?

Moyra Davey is definitely my favorite artist who uses, and thinks and writes about photography.

7. Who is your least favorite photographer?

Bruce Gilden is up near the top of the list. And Terry Richardson is somewhere in there, too.

8. What is your most regretted missed photo opportunity?

I think there are more opportunities and situations I was in where I took photographs and then in hindsight regretted it because the photographs didn’t match up with my memory of the experience. Situations where you think you should have photographed are probably better of not being photographed because you will remember them more vividly and truthfully.

9. Please describe your work in 5 words.

Mundane, boring, unmonumental, personal, sentimental.

Call For Artists & Vendors

Free and open to the public, the Northampton Print & Book Fair is a one-day event that will take place at A.P.E. Gallery in downtown Northampton, MA on Sunday, October 4th from 12-6pm. The NPBF is a combination invitational and juried event that will feature over 50 artists, publishers, studios and vendors who will have their works available for display and purchase. Focusing on printed material in the broadest sense, vendors will have a range of works from photographs, shirts, screen printed posters, chapbooks, zines, letterpress prints and more. This event is sponsored in part by the Northampton Arts Council and Fugitive Arts.

We are currently seeking submissions from artists, presses, labels, collectives and studios to be exhibitors at the 2015 Northampton Print & Book Fair!

I’m excited to share the news that All Visual Boston is making a brief comeback this summer, and at the ICA no less!  The event is happening as part of Ricardo De Lima’s “Another Spectacle” gallery in the 2015 James and Audrey Foster Prize show.  There will be a live soundtrack to the slideshow provided by the super talented BATHAUS.
