Two NYC talents assume a new form. It’s a beautiful thing man.
This song was left in my Tumblr inbox last June. It took me so long to find it because 1. I didn’t know I could receive messages on here and 2. Well, I just don’t post that much anymore.
S O F I E is a singer/songwriter originally from Ghana who now calls Oxfordshire home (at least at the time her message was sent). She plays guitar and piano and, after a couple runs through this song “Crimson Sun”, seems to have an affinity for rapping and producing as well.
The song finds its comfort at the crossroads of hip hop and R&B, focusing on personal growth and helping Sophie turn her pain into power. I love that. Dunno when I’m gonna be back on here again, and never really know if one of these posts will be my last, but if it turns out to be this one, I’m totally fine with that. I started this blog in September of 2009 in search of connection and escape in a darker time in my life. The fact I’m still now getting songs like this, now from a totally new generation of kids, thousands of miles away really solidifies why I did this in the first place.

From the man himself. So good
A favorite of recent. Happy fall!
Been away for a bit - all good things. What a special voice Phoebe has. I love “Motion Sickness” but this whole album is special.
Flight Facilities new single is a stunner. A swirl of melodic feels packaged with a truly lovely vocal performance by Dustin Tebbutt. Wish I was in NY to hear this one live at Output tonight.
Disclosure’s initial rise happened rapidly and on a rather massive scale. After a series of well crafted early releases (Offline Dexterity, Carnival, etc. ), the brothers found success with their debut album Settle and then again with the follow up Caracal. But that was nearly 3 years ago, so if you are like me and just reacquainting yourself with the duo, their new single “Ultimatum” isn’t a bad place to start. Built around a sample of Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara, the tune reflects the months to come - warm, fun, and full of light.
Great collab on a huge stage. Also a perfect addition to my running playlist. Newcomer Thutmose and SOS favorite Nombe deliver on “Run Wild”.
"Blame" is excellent. Laid back, the tune floats along but remains fully engaging from beginning to end.
This one caught me off guard, 15 seconds in I didn't think I was gonna like it. Definitely reminds me of The Kills, but way more melodic and vulnerable. Its a powerful song, especially around 1:18 - 1:24. Some great lines. Also love the subtle gunshot samples baked into the production around when she says the word "gun"
As far as debut singles go this is as strong a start as you can have. Swedish pop group Duets and Stuff making all the right first impressions
You Are Tennessee is a lovely tune, but so short! Don’t be caught off guard, though you’re def going to wish it carries on as the last 20 seconds are such magic. The distorted guitars around 40 seconds and 1:24 also remind me of this track "Eulogy" from the Stranger Things soundtrack.
Airy and chill UK vibes
New music (check) new tour (check), perhaps an album announcement is to follow? Ponder you may, just make sure it’s to the sweet sweet sounds of FF’s new tune Need featuring NÏKA. Now if only they will add a Los Angeles date to that tour...
Oh how sweet it is to have Lord Huron back releasing music again. Their third album, Vide Noir, arrives 4/20. Excited for the rest of the album and to finally see them live at The Greek in June.
