the thing about kakashi flashbacks is that he literally wasn't even good at repressing his emotions so he could be the perfect rational tool.
he picked it up from minato for sure but like the thing is minato is so good at it that you have to wonder if he even feels things he doesn't want to feel anymore. by all accounts he's got this locked down- happy when he's with his wifey, also happy when he's serving the vilage, and that's it that's what a good shinobi feels. kakashi is out here loosing his temper and shit like daily. minato had to be disapointed.
nohara rin, on the other hand,
— the story of the lost child, elena ferrante
i was thinking about the concept of dissolving boundaries that we find in my brilliant friend by elena ferrante and it fits the vision i have of rin’s character. i like to think of her as an unstable person, constantly afraid of losing control. she’s also afraid of stability, the relationship with kakashi and obito suffocates her, it makes her uneasy. the love she feels for both of them is complex but surely tainted by a dark feeling.
like when you think about rin’s function as propaganda in the story for kkob (for kakashi as pro-konoha propaganda cause he’s stupid and self-obsessed and for obito as anti-konoha and anti-world propaganda because he’s devoted and self-obsessed) it is fun to think of her actively dedicating herself to that process. no one gets to stand out as actively dedicating themself to the state in naruto because everyone except for a handful of people are supreme bootlickers (not even a mark of kishi’s failures; in fact it’s the opposite because that’s exactly what a hidden village as a confined military state produces lol). if you wanted to explore that with kkobrn you’re required to remove them from their circumstances and alter how the naruto world works a bit to allow for civilians outside of the hidden villages to join their militaries, to reduce the focus on infant soldiers. well that’s not a bit that’s changing the fundamental premise. and there probably wouldn’t be magic anymore. nevertheless. the point of this post is i enjoy the idea of rin sticking posters on lampposts and walls to encourage recruitment…managing registration and smiling earnestly as a 16-year-old at 16-year-old boys signing up. or as a nurse or a field medic (closest to canon so both the least compelling and most compelling) sternly reinforcing the loyalty of injured traumatized soldiers to the state. modernizing konoha in that way and actually getting to interact with the intricacies of propaganda would be so fun
i think with the way he is minato would actually be like fine with it if kushina had lesbian sex or whatever on the side as long as she was quiet about it so it didn't challenge their powercouple image but kushina on the other hand would be overcome with 10 million billion guilt for even imagining loving anyone besides minato when he's sacrificed so much to be with someone like her so it's just never happening. she is never finding out that she is bisexual.
'Cause when she lied it meant she loved me
And when she lied it meant she cared
i dont care that mangekyo awakened for you it should have happened to mikoto instead
You interrupted their gossip sesh
rinterpretation of chidorigate that i am personally very fond of is that she felt that living as a jinchuriki would be a fate worse than death. a life of hatred and ostracism from one’s community, relentless eternal use as a human nuke, and instant total erosion of her greatest talent: chakra control. even richer if you imagine her to have known by that point about kushina and base her horror at her predicament on observing and spending time with kushina (i am fond of the kushina taking a special interest in rin hc and like to think of rin helping her with certain work and wtv).
Sleepover fun pt 1
Hi people I’m back. Temporarily. Things have been. Happening. And then I took on two new projects and another exchange and lots of other things due haha…
also mito’s relationship to uzushio…raised for a political marriage i assume whether internal or external. perhaps this creates a cool kind of schrödinger’s loyalty situation in the mind of her father especially if she’s the only child which i like the idea of (she would hate and be baffled by hashirama and madara even more). if she stays in uzushio her brilliant mind needs to be optimized so that she may steadfastly serve her village. if she doesn’t stay there then whatever she knows can be utilized by the foreign village she’s sold to against it.
so because she is his one offspring but because of this dilemma her father alternates between shutting her out and throwing the weight of the village on her shoulders randomly. she grows up to be astute, disciplined, and competent; she’s instrumental in keeping things running, but frequently certain crucial information about the village and its state of affairs are kept from her and disseminated to those under her. which is miserable and humiliating for her.
once she’s sold to konoha, her father won’t allow her to come back, won’t tell her anything about how things are going, goes as far to tell hashirama more than her! he resents how much he wishes she could have stayed and taken over and punishes her for it. however hashirama who i think is a very shrewd delegator (lazy piece of shit) and obviously very emotionally attuned to others lets her in on shit because he can tell she’s grown desperately bitter and that her love for her home is being transformed into hate. which propels her to gleefully and adeptly fuck it over on behalf of konoha. her father could have never expected this because trusting a foreign wife makes no sense to him. anyway she is literally instrumental to her village’s decline as it’s used and discarded for konoha over and over :)
okay crab i'm taking you up on the challenge and i pick mito to start i have always been fond of her. mito is nice insane dyke potential to me specifically (foundersfic will ship her with most nothing character ever senju touka and idm it i like founders era i admit) but if you wanna get canon about it i like her being genuinely disgusted by madara's emotional indiscipline and sentimentality and also frigidbitchwifing hashirama all the time yayyyy. there was a really good orochimarufic where post-nawaki he found himself smiling at his own joke at the funeral and she noticed and looked at him like scum.
anyway coolest thing ever is to imagine that the whole thing about love overpowering kurama's hate is not how she dealt with him at all and she said that specifically because she understood kushina and felt that would work better for her. i think it is kind of awesome if she mostly powered through jinchurikiism with iron will a level of masochism and total fucking spite for kurama, and paid a lot of attention to kushina to see what method would be best for her.
i mean i get why some people wish sakura didn't end up a medic-nin but she's such a doctor she's suchhhhh a doctor she's literally a paternalism and contempt machine it's kind of the best thing about her.

teenage modern au obito and rin dating is actually so awesome to me. there's an exchange from a film i just saw floating around (days and nights in the forest, 1970) where she goes "do you know what i thought when i first saw you? i thought it would be wonderful, if i could crush this man's confidence" and he replies "that confidence is gone. you really have shaken it" and that's peak obirin.
