Before posting my goals for the semester, our conversation about experimenting with paint made me think of all my firsts with other mediums in the past. Here’s a couple of pieces I’ve created while experimenting over the years (although not all are paint-based) as an additional part of my introduction to the class.

Final thoughts?

This was by far one of the worst semesters I've ever had in the history of me pursuing higher education. Lol.

However

I've also had the most breakthroughs (and breakdowns) this semester than I've ever had. I feel like after all of this pressure, I'm really starting to come into my own, and even making my own lane after feeling like I had no direction. Looking back on everything I've made almost surprises me... like "wow I did that..."

I'm interested to see where next semester will lead me, as well as looking forward to a fresh start. This semester taught me that big need to be kinder to myself and to believe that I have to offer is special, too.

I think my main goal for my series next semester would be to have more REFINED work. I mean, tight, clean lines, and even working on better lighting/presentation. I want to make something that could be ready to hang in a gallery... not just my bedroom wall. Lol

Artist Statement:

“No one is going to ignore a Black woman on a really big horse.” - Brianna Noble, Oakland native.

This series is based on the cultural and historical movement of Black cowgirls in America——depicted in acrylic and gouache. Often times, Black history is limited to slavery and the Civil Rights movement. While those stories are a staple of who we are today and how far we have come, it’s important to note the other ways in which we’ve impacted this country. Ladies with Lassos and Southern Riderz are who I draw inspiration from for the purpose of these paintings. Originally, this series was meant to be a collection of portraits. However, as time went on, I found myself clinging to the idea of storyboarding in Western films and movie posters. Instead of prioritizing precision, I approached the works from a conceptual and genre-based standpoint.

FILLING IN THE BLANKS: Works to date including rough drafts.

I’ve been studying a lot of Romare Bearden’s work lately for another class but also for my own personal pleasure. A few months ago, my great-grandma sent over a bunch of photo albums and amongst them was a picture of my grandma and her brother——they had to have been around the ages four or five.

Then I thought back on old cartoons we used to watch growing up and within the home life of those cartoons, there would be family portraits in the background. Even though those framed figures weren’t painted in much detail, as a viewer you could tell just by the shapes and colors which character it was.

Think I might play around with these concepts for my final works. (pic of my sweet little grandma & uncle below)

Nat Love is a vengeance seeking outlaw with a killer shot in The Harder They Fall, but the real life “Deadwood Dick” was just as famous for his roping and riding skills as for his steady shooting hand. Born to enslaved parents in Davidson County, Tennessee, Nat headed west after the Civil War to pursue his dreams of becoming a cowboy. He quickly succeeded in Dodge City, Kansas, where he was hired by a Texas-based cowboy outfit to herd horses and cattle. He became famous for his rodeo expertise, and his career was only bested by the advent of railroads; he spent his final days working as a Pullman Porter. (1854–1921) 🎥 Watch The Harder They Fall, playing in select theaters on October 22 and on Netflix globally on November 3.

I really love how you engage your anatomy skills for the head figures. I highly recommend going over to a YouTuber named Mark Crilley; if i can recall, he can teach and guide anime/manga beginner artists to learn and know how to draw heads, body, eyes, how to draw this character or that character, etc. Here’s the link or so:
