Dear future self,

I think it’s going to hurt for a long time that Beatrix is gone. She was one of my three angel babies, the only good thing to have followed me from New York City, and now she is gone forever. (Barring a miracle.)

Copernicus was the first to go. He didn’t even manage to live a week in California. That was in 2017. Wow…hard to believe that was 7 years ago. That really puts it into perspective: the cats were born in 2012, so Copernicus died at 5 and Beatrix (most likely) died at 12. I hope Laika lives a while longer. I guess that’s not so bad, in the grand scheme of things.

But it’s not really about the grand scheme of things, is it? Pets don’t live in the grand scheme of things. They live in the brief and now. Blink, and they’re gone…in the grand scheme of things. Pets remind us to live in the moment, to cherish those days, weeks, years, that seem to fly by for us—but are a whole lifetime for them. I often wonder what my future will be; with Beatrix gone, I wish I’d appreciated the present and the past more.

I believe, if our spirits do carry on, that the chances of ever finding the same souls we met in this life when we go on to the next one, if there is one, are infinitesimal to none. I think that’s what makes it so special to find loved ones, even pets, and why we must cherish them while they’re with us. Perhaps in some other realm distances and time don’t matter, and meeting those loved ones again is only a matter of will and desire. That would be nice.

Maybe it’s easier to imagine there is a rainbow bridge, and we will meet again when it’s my time to go. I hope you’ve crossed that rainbow bridge, baby B, and I hope we meet again. 💙
