Digital Fabrication

This reading talks about how 3d printing and other technology has influence and shaped the process of architecture making. These ways of making have dramatically accelerated the processing time and capable of doing many form that are not possible before. It is not just efficiency, but also increase the complexity of design and product. It also talks about how the scale of digital fabrication is intended to be larger and wider than it is now. However, to efficiently use the digital tools, it is required to have more preparation and planing before the actual producing process.

RESPONSE 11: During the existence of the mass-produced 3d printer, I have seen it as a luxury. Only a few times throughout my architectural education have I needed to 3d print. ABS plastic is the only material which I ever needed for any presentation. What I am attempting to get across is that the need for different materials for 3d printed should not come off as a problem or issue. I am well aware that 3d printers have the ability to print with various materials, e.g., ABS plastic, metal, onyx, carbon fiber, and others. Only during a specific circumstance did I need to print with a material other than ABS plastic which I could have easily done and then spray painted for a similar look. It would be great if 3d printers could do more but I believe there should still be a sense of ownership when it comes to the development and creation of our own work.

EX 6 KUKA

This exercise was rather challenging since it was the first time using KUKA. It took a long time to get the machine ready and figure out why the machine only goes step by step instead of a continuous smooth action. Also, the first photo took with the square shape was really bright since the IOS on camera was too high.

Animate Form

In this article, Lynn talks about the shift in architecture from a neutral, unchanged space to a more complex design process involve animation and movement. The technology is now advance enough to form so called “virtual reality” to simulate space which is created by architect. The article mentions how VR cannot substitute reality makes me thinking about how the design process behind VR is very different from architecture. Architecture design has much more details behind the surface when VR is more of an abstract image to create the experience in a space. However, as architect create drawings of architecture, not the architecture itself, it is also true that we are creating an abstract space just like animation of space within VR.  As our assignment with grasshopper weeks ago, we can control the animation of form and use it in the design process with various software in the future.

Deleuze and the use of the Genetic Algorithm in Architecture

The article talks about how genetic algorithm apply to to artistic design. First he address the use of genetic algorithm has to result in something impossible for designer to imagine, otherwise would be meaningless. Then he talks about the direction used by architect within CAD and the thinking of generating for the population, not just one or two production. I personally think that grasshopper is a way to have mass production rather than individual. But it also makes a good point that form would not evolve to a building without the structures. Because once the structure and CAD part can be both generated with genetic algorithm, the only job left to designer would be aesthetic choice of possibility. I think even without genetic algorithm in design, real innovative design is very few when we look at studio work. The habit to rely on precedent is one of the signs. In conclusion, the article argues that create building merely with computer is still not possible without the thinking of population, intensity and topology.

The cutting process went rather smoothly except an unknown error at first. Everything else went very fast after restart the machine. 

The assembly process took more effort than imagined. The gap between tabs was really narrow so we have to cut some gap by hand in order to fit in. Also, it was impossible to fit in all 8 parts because the shape became to wide and hard to expand.

DRAWINGS

This reading talks about how the common used 2d dimensional architectural drawing in relation to the design process and construction of architecture. The subjective perspective, mathematical plans and sections,  and axonometric, the combination of both. These techniques were the first thing we learn in architectural education, because it is the architect’s job to make drawings, not the building itself. One idea I found interesting is how the article talks about efforts made by architects on representing ideas through drawing but there is always a gap between drawings and reality. As digital modeling and BMI become more advance nowadays, I wonder will there be a day when architectures are built entirely base on digital modeling without the process of making 2D drawings.

Architecture modeling after Descartes

As the time enters the digital age, modeling in architecture is switching from a representation of design to the process of design itself. The shift from classical to modern geometrical thinking emphasizes the activity of creation itself. It is the change from analytic to the synthetic that introduced more complexity in to the three spheres of architecture: conceptual sphere, operational sphere, and constructional sphere. Burry uses the example of Responsive Acoustic Surface to exam how digital computation work on the field of architecture in a more precise and calculated way but also includes certain randomness. He also argues the system goes beyond architectural model and enters a multiple dimension space. I agree on his opinion about how we now construct model to construct problems on computer, not just the representation of design. Since I move to Rhino to design, the entire thinking process has changed and modeling became the first thing I do before even start on plan and section. This is the opposite from what I used to do with hand drawing.

First time using grasshopper, very interesting way of creating form. This is very different from how I am used to use rhino since it is more toward programing. I think by learning this program, it could help with the future rhino work faster and smoother.

Analogous and digital

It is hard to believe this article was written in 40 years ago when I got to the afterword. Aicher’s idea with digital effects on way of thinking is very advanced and cut to problem with digitalization, the generalization of human kind. I think this article is a good beginning for the start of this course, which discuss the relationship between the digital perception and imagery thinking. One of the ideas that was discussed was about how information present on image is perceived as an overall view. This reminds me thinking about the use of plan, section and other drawings to represent architectural project during review is so important on communicating the design idea behind. At this point, technology has grown faster and stronger compare to 40 years ago, the amount of information received by people is much larger than they used to be. It is critical to think about how the power of image could effect the input on us.
