In the mid-80s, HIV/Aids terrified the world because of a lack of understanding as well as misinformation. In April 1987, Princess Diana opened the UK’s first purpose built HIV/Aids unit that exclusively cared for patients infected with the virus, at London Middlesex Hospital. In front of the world’s media, Princess Diana shook the hand of a man suffering with the illness.

She did so without gloves, publicly challenging the notion that HIV/Aids was passed from person to person by touch. She showed in a single gesture that this was a condition needing compassion and understanding, not fear and ignorance.

I recently read an article about a therapy group for depressed people who had all attempted suicide at some point. The breakthrough question for them was, “If your goal was to be just as miserable as possible, what would you do?” Most of them listed things like not getting enough sleep, or isolating themselves from everyone… the list goes on, but the point is, they listed things they already do. But now they saw those “coping mechanisms” for what they really were: things that were actively making their condition worse.

I read that article at 2:00 AM, asked myself, am I TRYING to be miserable tomorrow? And it was easier than usual to put my phone down and fall asleep. Even my intrusive “lying down” thoughts about meaninglessness and existential dread were easier to suppress when I framed them as things I’d think about to purposefully make myself feel as awful as possible.

yes hello hi! this is Joe Biden officiating a gay marriage. Joe Mahshie and Brian Mosteller, long time White House Staffers asked the then Vice President (this is 2016) to marry them. It was the first wedding (and only as far as I know) Biden had ever officiated, he had to get a special temporary certification to do it in DC. This picture (and the Wedding) is at the Naval Observatory in DC, the official home of the Vice President, to date there’s not be a gay wedding at the White House. 

Besides being a nice personal story there’s a reason Mahshie and Mosteller asked Biden to marry them. Joe Biden came out for gay marriage before Obama. In May 2012 Biden went on meet the Press and voiced support for gay marriage. It was the middle of an Election year, at that point NO! candidate for President or VP had ever supported full marriage. Obergefell v. Hodges which would legalize gay marriage nation wide was still 3 years away. Many in the Obama White House were enraged at Biden for “jumping the gun” and “forcing Obama’s hand” With his Vice President and running mate on the record as for gay marriage Obama had to also come out for gay marriage latter that same week. I don’t know what would have happened had Joe not told the truth on Meet the Press, but I think many Obama aids wanted to wait till after the election to say it publicly.

I remember when that happened in 2012, too, it was a HUGE fucking deal at the time. The zeitgeist changed SO FAST on gay marriage that I genuinely don’t think people under the age of 25 or so really understand what it was like.

After years of democrat leaders going “well I suppose the gays could have some form of domestic partnerships maybe but definitely not real marriage because… because [insert tepid homophobia]” seeing Vice President Joe Biden tilt his head in 2012 and publicly go against the party line and say “Oh, yes I support gay marriage. Why shouldn’t all of us have the same rights?” was a big deal. It made a difference. This is the first President who could say something like this and I would find it credible.

Skepticism and cynicism are reasonable to a point but letting them lead you blindly into ignorance is just as bad as blind faith.
