If you havenât watched The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec (2010) yet, what are you waiting for?
An utterly absurd yet endearingly irrepressible confection, this quirky adventure features a dinosaur-era creature on the loose in Belle Ăpoque Paris, a foray to a perilous Egyptian tomb, coffee-sipping mummies, and an intrepid, resourceful heroine bent on defeating any and all obstacles in order to fix a tragic accident. Based on a fantasy comic book series by Jacques Tardi, it stars the wonderful Louise Bourgoin. Thereâs a minor romance between secondary characters but the primary relationship focus is on sisterhood.
Negatives? The orientalism that generally goes with this type of action-adventures, plus the quality of some of the special effects. The film is also too silly and clunky to be in the league of The Mummy or Indiana Jones. On the upside, its mummies break some expected stereotypes, the cinematography is pretty, and Adèle is, quite simply, a fantastic protagonist.
