The other day me and my friends watched this Soviet Fantasy movie from the 50s called The Sword and The Dragon. Indeed there was a magical sword in it, and a dragon, but they were relatively minor elements of the film. The dragon was pretty impressive while on screen but shows up without any build up and is killed rather swiftly by some minor characters while the protagonist is off doing other stuff. The magical sword is just kinda given to the protagonist and he never really does anything particularly magical with it, the sword was more of a metaphor really about like patriotism or something because it was a Soviet movie based on a Russian fairy tale.
This kinda feeds into a thing I’ve been thinking about lately how like in the past people struggled with how to adapt stories into or create new stories for movies. Like for decades we basically just would take stage plays and cut or add scenes as needed to make run time, and over time we got better with figuring out how to work with the strengths of the medium to make scripts that work as movies. In my opinion we kinda reached the zenith for this 80s. Like of course there were well written movies before the 80s, but that’s kinda when we reached the point where the average movie atleast feels like a movie and not just a collection of scenes. The problem is that we kept trying to improve how we write stories and now we live in like this hyper reality nightmare where we have shit like the Hobbit movies.
Like going back to the original point of this post, in that movie The Sword and the Dragon, the movie, while absolutely visually gorgeous, kinda suffers from “a bunch of scenes” syndrome. I feel like if the movie was made now adays, instead a bunch of the goofy musical scenes would be cut out and in their place we’d get a bunch of scenes hyping up the dragon, and scenes explaining the backstory of the sword. The climax of the movie would be like a 35 minute extended war scene massive CGI armies fight the dragon until the hero shows up and uses the magic sword to defeat it. The villain in the movie was an evil Tartar king who at one point tries to steal the protagonists wife. In this strawman remake I’m envisioning the villain would be revealed to be the protagonists long lost brother or something and there would be a bunch of bullshit where the hero tries to convince him to be a good guy again, and at the very end the evil king would like sacrifice himself to stop the dragon or something. They would also double down on the attempted love triangle thing which was only like one scene in the original. In the world where this remake exists, there would be a portion of Tumblr which would of course ship the two brothers, and there would be a portion who would do like a poly ship thing between the three.
Oh also I mentioned early that the original movie is visually beautiful, that would be gone in the remake. All the striking colors of the original would be replaced with that boring color grading thing all movies do nowadays and the sets and animatronics would all be fucking greenscreen nonsense.
deeply flattering but the post is from 5 days ago.
