I can't recommend John Bellairs work enough, especially if you are looking for well written, intelligent, soulful horror/ mystery books for kids. He achieves legitimate levels of suspense, and the supernatural elements of his novels are often based on well-researched real life magick.
The characters are also really beautifully written, and will stick with you for a long time.
