I just wanna thank you for ever creating Leon. The Only Faith was the first book I've read by you and my 7th grade brain immediately latched on to him. I'm in 10th now and for some reason and I STILL CAN'T LET GO. I literally love him so much. He's such a lovable character. đđ
Aww, I'm glad to hear that, thank you! Leon's a sweet lil bean
Hey! Just saw this so sorry for the late response but wanted to respond. I am the âUnpopular Opinionsâ Person btw
OBVIOUSLY all the respect is meant. You are a genius <3 love your work, this is just some commentary
- Brennan IS a worse person than Killian because Killian really⌠doesnât have THAT much agency in his life. Idk maybe Iâm being too soft on him but Iâve always emphasized w/ children who make bad/objectively ambiguous decisions as the result of a turbulent life. Therefore, where Killian and Brennan made the SAME level of bad choices, Killian was genuinely a good person who was just trying to be a teenager/live his life in this âFish out of Waterâ scenario he was put in. Brennan, meanwhile, came off like he had A LOT more agency and⌠strength, so to speak, not only in his own life but who he was in general. Therefore itâs a lot harder to excuse him for the stupid shit he puts himself in (like involving himself w/ the Principalâs son AND getting drawn into the bad/rebellious crowd, etc.). Therefore, Brennan is a worse person because generally those people (the reckless people who know they can make different, better choices and CHOOSE NOT TO), donât tend to make the BEST decisions for their loved ones as well. Like I could see Brennan pulling some real dick behavior and causing shit for the people he cares for. Meanwhile, Killian? I highly doubt it. Itâs the difference between âall bark but no biteâ (Killian) and vice versa. One is just better.
- I agree on that! Iâm just saying that IRL, the friends that stick will stick around. No amount of distance can TRULY crush any friendship. No doubt. Meanwhile⌠him relying on his friends as his family? Idk. Thereâs a difference between âMy friends are my familyâ and âmy friends can replace my family.â One is a MASSIVE cope and the other is just having close platonic/non-traditional family relationships. I still say Ireland wouldâve given him time to grieve, properly, and become a more stable/stronger person. Just because something is harder to do doesnât mean itâs the wrong choice.
- They are healthier!! Youâre so right. And yeah, Staz and Ethan are similar but not the same people BUT⌠Will ALWAYS gave me the wrong vibes. I donât vibe w/ hypocrites, and he is a MASSIVE one, considering him and Jude are EXTREMELY alike (Will just have the advantage of not having a horrible relationship w/ his Mother, otherwise I GUARANTEE he wouldâve made similar if not the same choices). HOWEVER, the dynamics are EERILY similar. Two soft boys from subtly troubled homes change the perspective of two much more damaged, aggressive boys? Yeah, apologies if this wasnât the correct read in the slightest, but both couples sort of gave me those vibes tbh. Although not ENTIRELY, clearly, as they are both complex enough to not be carbon copies (I realized this mightâve been insulting and so sorry if it is. Iâm not trying to say that at all, they just follow the same TROPES.)
- You were an EXCELLENT writer (I mean your characters than were ten times more complex than mine are NOW), I just think the plot needed the characters to do what it needed them to do and there wasnât a lot of time for diversions. Also, it really isnât your fault if they were âa nightmare.â Hollywood/etc. LOVES the dysfunctional friendships. Just look at Riverdale! White Lotus (if you need a more updated example)! Gossip Girl! Literally any superhero movie. Itâs just more fun for friends to sort of hate each others guts, unfortunately. ESPECIALLY in Young Adult media. Benji is still a bad friend to Ethan and Gideon tho⌠I will DIE on this hill (plus Sonnet and Ethan are the platonic soulmates we never got to see).
And thatâs it! Thank you so much for your time!! I hope I never veered into disrespectful or rude while writing this. I feel like I did at multiple points so if I have, I am extremely sorry, clearly not my intention. I have a HUGE amount of respect to you and obviously, these are tour books, I just was curious to see if you would hate these tbh. All the love <3 Have a great day/evening!!!!
Cheers :)
This was super respectfully worded and I really appreciate the perspective! As the writer, it's sometimes hard for me to imagine how things can be interpreted differently than I intend, so I appreciate these kinds of honest perspectives. It gives me a lot to consider when writing in the future! Thanks for sharing! :)
Unpopular opinions (or not idk I just feel BRAVE and I love your work/writing so here we go):
-Brennan is a worse person than Killian BUT Killian is a better person than both Ethan and Benji combined.
-Jude and Nate (+ Landon, maybe) have a healthier friendship than the entire group of Sonnet, Benji, Ethan, and Gideon.
-Griffin short term wise would have been MISERABLE in Ireland w/ his dad⌠but in the long term? The better choice. Idk but maybe strengthening family bonds is safer than putting all your eggs in one high school friend group.
-Will and Ethan are just Jude and Staz in a VERY different font.
-Benji is a bad friend to Ethan and Gideon. AND Will and Gideon seem more likely to be friends than Benji does w/ Sonnet and Ethan (tho Sonnet and Ethan shouldâve been better friends than they were).
-Jude has the worst home life. Period. That high pressure environment, the fight or flight response it produces, AND a weak willed parent/unbalanced support structure? Yikes. (Although this âworst home lifeâ spot also belongs to Staz because.. ya know.)
And thatâs it. Thanks a lot for all your stories! Hope this wasnât too annoying/weird lmao, just had THOUGHTS and was curious what you would say. Completely understand if you donât want to answer but thank you regardless for your time and attention. Have a great day/evening <3 Cheers
Obviously no disrespect meant. Thanks again :)
I would argue Brennan is not a worse person than Killian, but would be curious to hear your thoughts on why he is (but agree Killian is better than Ethan and Benji)
Jude and Nate have one of my favorite friendships, because even if Jude is a bad influence ON Nate, he's never actually a bad person TO Nate
Griffin losing his mom and his dad constantly being away gave him an unhealthy dependency on Hal, which extended to an unhealthy reliance on friends as a makeshift family. I think it could've gone either way if he had moved away with his dad
I disagree, because Jude and Staz (at least towards the end) are MUCH healthier as a couple than Will and Ethan ever were
That whole friend group dynamic was a nightmare, but a lot of that was just because I was not a good writer
I can agree with this on a level, as it leaves Jude constantly feeling both in control of his parents (because of his dad) and desperate to be good enough for them (because of his mom) and is over all just awful for him mentally
Thanks for sharing! Readers usually end up with different ideas and opinions than what I have when I write the stories and it's nice to read them and compare. Also, thanks for being sharing your opinion while remaining civil and kind about it!
Hi, I was wondering if you ever plan on writing anything else relating to the Conversion Academy Trilogy. (I'm honestly just wondering if you were going to write any more prompts). Also, I absolutely love Leon for no explainable reason.
If I ever get my ass back to writing, I love doing Conversion Academy prompts. Also, I too absolutely love Leon for no explainable reason.
Have you ever considered what it would be like if ALL the villians from your stories were in one room together? MAGIC. PURE GOLD. I wanna root for my boy Jude but I feel like, in the league of all the bad characters, he probably would crumble to at least ONE of them... so... thoughts? Thanks. Just wanted this to be brought to attention. Cheers
I cannot BELIEVE you are out here acting like Aaron Kizziar wouldn't beat the ever loving fuck out of Jude
Hi! Uh I have 2 questions about one of your old works XD
Uh I was wondering if thereâs gonna be a new chapter of Power (Dragon Academy) and if there can be a prompt on Nick and Bruce?
Thanks :)
Probably not, sorry! That was a story I worked on when I was 11 and uploaded so I wouldn't lose it. There was a little more content but ironically, I lost it before I could upload it
I was wanting to ask about a prompt of an alternative world of what if it was Aaron was Sent to conversion Academy instead of Kaz.
Headmaster Constance mysteriously retires a month after Aaron arrives
You're probably sick of answering questions about a character you wrote years ago and are definitely probably over but I HAVE to know because it's interesting: is Jude a straight up Villian or an Anti-Hero? Because he's definitely NOT a hero like Benji, Evan, Sonnet, Gideon, etc. But he's not like COMPLETELY bad (or Fixing The Scatters would be MUCH MORE abusive, problematic, sadistic than it is) so what is he, if you had to strip the gray like nuanced shit, and just call him what he is? Sorry BTW your writing in EXCELLENT and improves SO MUCH it's great, thx for it all
Jude was really fun to write because he is fully capable of being a good, considerate person (we see that with Staz), but he's selfish and has an immature bully streak. With Jude, I think it all comes down to perspective. He is mainly a villain, but to the very few he cares about, he'd probably fall more into anti-hero category. I had a blast writing Fixing The Scatter because I never intended to make him good, just to show him in a different perspective. He's still awful, but readers get a glimpse of the good he does possess.
Does your new prompt account have any stories posted. I checked but I couldnât find anything :/
It does not because I wrote two prompts for it and then just...never posted them. Mostly because I was afraid if I logged out of my main account, I'd have trouble logging back in. That's what happened with my original prompt account; logged out and couldn't get back on it.
Okay. Maybe Iâm the only person who wants to know-side note; I stalked you from wattpad to here to ask this. You have no idea how many times I read your books-anyway, in the Kill the Lights and the Swan Song you talk about Austin Winchester. I have to know what happens to him! Am I the only person? I feel like I need a spin off! But maybe thatâs just me? I dunno. But like; itâs been years; and Iâve been dying to know! Whatâs his story. Does he ever find love? Does he ever get real friends? Gahhhhh! Okay. Thanks.
That character was a way for me to vent about an ungodly annoying person in my life at the time so I literally could not care less what happened to Austin and will never write him again (but the irl person is doing fine and good for them because they're not so bad when you haven't had to interact with them in nearly a decade)
Have you ever listened to Froggy Fresh
Is that Krispy Kreme
"We'd just been trying to stand up for victims. Things had escalated and we'd been unprepared for it.
We'd been unprepared for the consequences."
Iâve been rereading Only Faith and this quote Brennan said had me thinking of Social Menace.
Did he use to be in Tysonâs group before Nolan came into it??
He did not! There are some prompts of his old friends. They were more impulsive than Tyson and his friends, which is how Brennan ended up getting caught
Do your friends know about your wattpad and tumblr account?
Nope
Is this your favorite social media app
It's the only one I really use regularly, but I also have multiple accounts so I can be a weird lil gremlin anonymously
Do u know when youâre gonna start posting again, no rush ofc lol
Honestly, not a clue. I haven't had much free time for writing lately, unfortunately
Do you think writing makes you a happy or sadder person, and if so why? (If you don't mind asking of course)
Happy, because it's what I do to relieve stress and sometimes even to work through grief or anger. It's been an outlet for me ever since I was a child and it's something I've always enjoyed doing
