"Your heart knows the way. Run in that direction” Rumi Creativity has its seasons. Inspiration can come upon us like a train or tiptoe in as a quiet curiosity. There are seasons when we want to take in as much beauty and knowledge and connection as our minds can hold. There are seasons of work. Doing the work when we are passionate about it and still doing the work when passion can’t be found. There is a time to put ourselves out there. To face judgement. To re-examine, revise, perhaps change course. To set new goals. To dream new dreams. And then, there is a season of rest. Our culture doesn’t value the “rest” as much as the striving and achieving, but it is just as necessary. Today, I’m taking Facebook off of my phone. It feels so good to say that! I still need it for work, and I’ll still be on when I’m in my office, posting for my businesses, checking in with people that I love, but looking back over the past few years, I feel there has been a real imbalance in this profession. The need to constantly be online for business. I have been much more often in the busy phases of creativity and much less in rest. I’m proud of what I’ve built and excited about our future…but lately, I’m just craving s-i-l-e-n-c-e. I’ve stopped watching the news. I spend less time on social media. I don’t worry so much about my business. And slowly, peace creeps in. I have found that the more silence I give myself, the more I enjoy my work. The more I love what I am creating. Sometimes we need to create a space for ourselves, for our ideas to come, for our creativity to return. Maybe it’s found in spending more time with the people we love. Maybe it’s found getting lost in doing what we love. Maybe it’s found by simply forgetting about the outcomes and enjoying this moment, just as it is, in all of its beauty. I know it sure as hell isn’t found on social media. So with that, I’m looking forward to this season. Snow outside. Spring inside. I'll stay in here!
The internet is an amazing tool. It has allowed me to start a business, reach hundreds of thousands of creatives as an educator, and puts every resource I need at my fingertips. I can pick up my iPad and read the truths of any religion. I can study the greatest artists, poets and geniuses that have ever walked this earth. We have access to a combined brilliance, abundance and love like has never been possible before on our planet. But there is a dark side too. Our home video went viral (again). Many people watched those few seconds of our life and saw it as we did. A kinda hysterical reaction from a 2 yr old who didn't get her way. But other people perceived it differently. They weren't laughing. I read comments about my children that I will not repost. At first I wanted to respond to them, in defense of my girls. I feel just like every mama bear out there. I wanted to give them a giant, witty "fuck you". But then I thought: It is real people behind that hate. What pain have they faced to react that way? Since they don't know us, their reaction is much more a reflection of their life experience than the truth of who we are as a family. And I had this overwhelming feeling of sadness. Not for my girls who are blessed and loved beyond measure. But for those people who aren't. Their pain just happened to be brought out by a video on the internet. And in this light my defensiveness transformed into compassion. I have been able to shield our girls from the internet for now, but one day they won't have my censorship. And they will read comments like these about themselves or others. All of our children will have to wade through the anger, hurt, and judgement of others. I want them to know that their worth is not tied to the opinions and actions of those around them. I want them to move through life with an unshakable knowledge that they are loved, and beautiful, and brilliant, just for being who they are. All I can do as a mom is continue to remind them. So to the bullies and the trolls, I can respond with compassion instead. I can thank them for reminding us that our greatness cannot be shaken. And I will tell my children to keep being brilliant.
Heyyyyy. So it's international women's day? I just hopped on Instagram and found out! I think I'm one of the luckiest girls around and I don't take it for granted, so here goes... I grew up with grandmothers who were never afraid to speak their mind or show their strength and now have 4 incredible, strong, smart and beautiful women to help grandparent my children. I have been able to start my own business and forge my own path in life. I have a husband who supports every choice I make and dream I want to pursue. I run a company full of women who are amazing artists and creatives @mariahgale @cali_campbell @gordienali @dariavalles. I get to work with value driven companies who support women in their choices and their journeys through motherhood like @littlenestphoto @lauranovakm & @summerinfant... to name a few! Tonight Shaun will feed the kids and put them to bed while I enjoy book club with a group of girlfriends I've known since childhood and all of my girlfriends near and far inspire me every day. They are following their dreams, becoming mothers, running their own businesses too. Then there are all of the incredible female entrepreneurs and amazing mothers that I have met in my journey as a baby photographer and educator, like @jeansmithphoto who took this portrait. I am surrounded by the beauty of womanhood and I feel pretty darn blessed to absorb a little fraction of it from all of you! Happy international women's day! #internationalwomensday #girlpower
