No cake this year since my house is too hectic right now but even though I haven't practiced as much since taking German for-credit at uni I've been pleasantly surprised with how much I've been able to retain when I bust out my Mandarin! So here's to another year full of more Mandarin!

Langblr update I don't remember if I've posted about before...I could not fit my uni's German classes into my timetable so I am done being a German student, but probably not done being a German learner since I quite like German. I do expect teaching myself German grammar to be difficult since my professors were very amazing.

On the bright side, I mamde some progress with Plautdietsch. I travelled to a historic Mennonite area of Canada with my mother and grandmother (the latter of which spoke Plautdietsch as a child) and I couldn't speak in Plautdietsch with any of the locals, I learned more about the language and taught myself some more Plautdietsch from a book I have.

Here is the sentence I have to show for it: Etj räde blooß een bätje Plautdietsch - I only speak a little Plautdietsch. Mind you, the two main Plautdietsch books I have use different orthographies which I have not checked for, but I know how to say it. Which is the part that kind of matters the most for a historically unwritten language.

In anticipation of playing the last episode of AAI2:PG (which I have now played) I made a list of unresolved plot points, and here are the ones that were still unanswered by the end with my commentary. Spoilers below for AAI2:PG as well as for AA4 from my commentary.

Whereabouts of Auctioneer's Hammer (possibility already given that Excelsius destroyed, probably left at that, though I wonder how they ended up convicting him)

Where did Rosie Ringer's and Excelsius Winner's burns come from (unanswered question I am satisfied without having an answer, though I wonder how Excelsius got a burn mark in that location in that shape. Sort of like how we're left wondering how Kristoph Gavin got the devil scar on his hand in AA4)

Will Ian Sideman play a future role (he didn't, no reason for him to be involved with the events of the last case but I thought it strange for him to be given a name and not used at all after. For comparison, I would've been satisfied with Alf Aldown never being given a name and just being referenced as "Rosie had a lover once..." if he weren't in the last episode)

Why was Kay at Gourdy Lake the night she got attacked (maybe I just missed her being given a reason...but I thought it would be strange for her to return to a crime scene the night after a crime happened. If this was actually unanswered and I didn't miss anything, this would be a considerable plot hole in my opinion.)

Who were the other attendees of the illicit auction and what was the international connection - since Franziska von Karma was sent by Interpol (it just seemed like something domestic police would care more about than interpol, but it would make sense if the Alif Red statue was in Borginia before. Other than that, it just seemed unusual to include Franziska in this particular case)

What I respected the most about this game was that every case was intertwined, there really was no filler at all. Everything was wrapped up nicely!

Started playing The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures and I am quite excited about this...my first dive into the duology and I'm already intrigued by the plot. The Ace Attorney games I have played (aka all the other ones minus the sequel to this + the Professor Layton crossover) have never quite explored the themes of politics, xenphobia, and cultural inferiority complexes like this. So I'm feeling good about how interesting the plot will be.

Also, I do appreciate the historical touch which stands in contrast to the mainline games which had to specific setting prior to Spirit of Justice saying "yeah Turnabout Samurai happened in Los Angeles pretty much saying everything thing else is in LA." I would certainly love to learn about Meiji-era Japan to see how accurate things are!

Three-part trial for the first episode was kind of brutal but I can't wait to press on and see where Ryunosuke's adventures take us!

I found Simeon Saint (True Self) being used as a foil to Miles Edgeworth was so interesting...I couldn't find anything to confirm that Simeon's face in his default smirk was based on Edgeworth's face but it certainly looked intentional to me.

Aside from the design, it really felt like the other path Edgeworth could've gone on after having lost is father. He could've ended up as someone who could place his trust in no one and was more than happy to manipulate and lie to others to get his way, but instead he was able to push forward.

And therein lies the difference between the two, Edgeworth used his pain to right the wrongs of the world, whereas Simeon used his pain to wrong the wrongs of the world.
