Managing Design Effectiveness for DisneyStore
Consider and research the following questions:
1. Why is managing design effectiveness important to my chosen case study?
Design effectiveness is very important to the DisneyStore online as this is how they will attract their potential and/or existing customers.
2. What needs to be considered in managing the design effectiveness of the site?
The layout and style of products and promotional offers is vital as they are the main method of attracting customers- Especially those that maybe don't sell too well.
Banners and large imagery can be used as an eye-catching method. Slideshows on the center can also be created in order for customers to manually click through and see if anything grabs their attention.
Colours and styles will also need to be considered. Pastel colours relating to Newborns or young babies will be used to advertise products relating to this category, whereas brighter colours will be used to advertise toys for the older child.
3. How would you go about this?
Some methods mentioned above. Navigational design and structure needs to be simple and effective to coincide with the users need to find the specific content (see Previous Task).
4. What tools or techniques are available to me to manage design on this site?
Techniques and best practices for effective Web Design can include:
Clearly visible text on background colours. Careful consideration to fonts and sizes, also.
Emphasis for certain banners or images can be created by adding borders.
Consistency throughout the site should also be kept in mind.
Eye-catching headers. Reinforcement of companies image, logo, vital information, etc.
Drop-down categories of tabs can be included for ease of usability.
5. Can Google Analytics or any other technology be used and how?
Google Analytics allows you to test variations of your pages so you know which designs lead to the most usage. In-Page analytics will show how the user navigates on a given page, but does not let-off much about the actual design.
Focus groups or interviews can be held, so the site can be used for different scenarios and comments can be made on the design and layout.
Eye-tracking technology can also be used to craft effective designs in advertising and usability. This benefits user experience research and provides additional measures that help compare alternative designs. Eye movements however, sometimes only reveal the process and not thoughts on the actual site design.
A/B testing technology allows a user or management to view and compare two versions of a page element and see which performs better. Designs such as different headlines, attraction to images and banners, slideshows, etc.
