Since he's still rocking in the NCAA Tourney, here's a throw back from earlier in the season of Udoka Azubuike . KEYS TO THE PLAY 1. Footwork: Azubuike does a great job getting under his defender and maintaining a wide, low base. When you get to the spot you want, make sure your knees are bent and put your hip into the thigh of your defender. In this position you should be able to keep your defender where you want them, and prepare yourself for the entry pass. 2. Entry Pass: Kansas wing man, Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, catches the ball on the wing and quickly makes the entry pass to the post. When passing to post players, its your job to ensure the pass is easy to catch. The post player should hold their hand where they want the pass to go, so feed them and let them go to work. You should almost never give a post player a chest pass. Aim high and away from the defender, or give them a nice bounce pass away from the defender. 3. Go to the Ball: The second thing that Azubuike does well in this play is go get the ball. Mykhailiuk makes a pass that is high and away from the defender, but had Azubuike waited for the pass to come to him, it probably would have been stolen. Anytime you're receiving a pass, whether you're in the post or not, go to the ball. 4. Be aggressive and make sure you're the one who comes up with the rock. . Examples of Great Post Play - Deandre Ayton - University of Arizona . KEYS TO THE PLAY 1. Play Defense: Ayton uses his size and athleticism to dominate on both sides of the court. In this play he closes out on the three point shooter and is able to block his shot. Be aggressive on both sides of the court, and let your defense lead into offense. 2. Run the Floor: After the block Ayton doesn't casually walk up the floor, expecting his ball handler to do all the work. He sprints the court and looks to attack the basket. Big men who run on fast breaks and beat the defense down the floor will find a lot of opportunities to score. 3. Go Straight to the Front of the Rim: This is perhaps the best thing that Ayton does in the entire play. Many young big men are unsure of where to go when they run the floor. The answer is go straight to the front of the rim and clear everyone else out. The low post, right below the rim, is exactly where you should go. . UNC STAGGERED SCREEN - Here is a very quick hitting play, which should be simple enough for most any team to run. It involves a staggered screen in the paint for a player cutting towards the basket. . The players start with three players along the free-throw line extended, two players above the three-point line, and with the ball on the wing. . Action 1. The player on the free-throw line nearest the ball sets a back pick for the player above the three point line. 2. The ball is rotated and the player above the three point line clears out to the opposite corner. This movement creates the potential for a hand-off screen, so look for this opportunity if it presents itself. 3. The player who started with the ball on the wing sets a down screen for the player on the block. The player on the free throw line also sets a down screen. This combination of screens is called a staggered screen. 4. The player coming off of the screen needs to read how the defender reacts. If the defender cuts under the second screen, the cutter should go straight to the top of the three-point line. If the defender follows the cutter around the screen, the cutter should curl cut, which is what happens here. . UNC BASELINE OUT OF BOUNDS - The starting position is essentially a box. You want your two biggest players on the same side as the ball and outside the three point line. . Action 1. The two players closes to the baseline move first, with the smaller player in the key setting a screen on the bigger player, who comes back towards the basket. 2. The screener then pops out and catches the inbounds pass. 3. As soon as the ball is inbounded the two players positioned around the free throw line extended make their move. In this case, the bigger player on the wing is setting a screen for the smaller player, who flashes to the wing and catches the pass. 4. The post player under the basket then sets a back pick on the post player, who should now be near the free throw line. The player receiving the pick is looking for the lob pass as they cut towards the basket. The screener then flashes to the top of the key for the pass. 5. Once the ball is rotated out of the corner, the in bounder receives a staggered screen from the players in the corner and on the wing, then cuts towards the ball, which is now at the top of the key. . Defensive Rotation: Duke's Grayson Allen doesn't get this charge call because he's lucky. Notice how engaged he is on the entire play. He moves with the ball, watches the man behind him, and stays in position. if you want to be a better defender, be more active when the ball is not in your zone. Talk. Move your feet. Be ready. 2. Close Out: When the ball is rotated to his player, Allen reacts quickly and doesn't wait for the ball to arrive. He keeps his knees bent and is able to slide in front of the Michigan State player as soon as he makes his move. When they're in their 2-3 zone, the Duke Blue Devils like to trap the ball in the corners. Here they come up with a big slam on the other end of the court. . KEYS TO THE PLAY 1. Hands Up: In this play Duke players Antonio Vrankovic and Alex O'Connell trap the ball when Michigan State passes to the corner. They do a great job of moving their feet and keeping their hands up. This makes it hard for the Michigan State Player to make a pass. When you trap, make sure you keep you knees bent and your elbows straight. 2. Trap the Corner: Trapping the corner is an effective play because it limits the offensive players options. Rather than having 360 degrees to move or pass, they are restricted to 90 degrees. Look to trap when the ball is in the corner, either along the baseline or along the half court line. 3. Shoot the Passing Lanes: Once the ball goes to the corner, the other Duke players do a good job of reacting to the positioning of the offense. Jordan Goldwire cuts off the pass out of the trap, so the offensive player makes a more difficult heave pass. Trevon Duval then shoots the passing lane and takes the ball to the other end for the slam. When in a zone, make sure you stay active and cut off the passing lanes, you might end up with a run out of your own. . You can see this type of screen a lot in the college game, where teams try to get a lot of motion going with dribble hand offs. . Reading the Play 1. If your defender drops below the screen, look to shoot (as long as it's within your range). 2. If your defender comes over the screen, look to catch the ball and come off the screener in a curl cut (covered in the next section) 3. If the screener's defender traps the hand-off, the screener should slip the screen and go to the basket or flair out to make the pass out of the double easier. . SCREEN IN SPACE . Screens are easy to set when you know that you're supposed to set them. For example, when you are running a set play or the ball handler calls for a screen. Great players set screens when they are unexpected, when the opportunity is right. . In this play, Miami's Dewan Huell comes up to set an on-ball screen for Lonnie Walker IV. Walker comes off the screen, drives to the basket, and finishes at the rim. . It looks pretty easy right? Well, look again. . After Huell sets the first screen, he opens up and slides toward the basket. Watch what he does when he realizes that Walker is going to take it all the way. He stops and puts his body into the defender. He essentially screens two of the defenders on the play and gives Walker an open lane. . Was this planned?
