How Young is Too Young to Start Tretinoin for Anti-Aging? (Generic Retin-A)

I am not an expert or a scientist, so this is just my advice in layman’s terms as I understand it. Please let me know if I have horribly misunderstood the function and effects of tretinoin!

Sunscreen is actually the most important anti-aging product and it has the added benefit of protecting you from skin cancer. Without sunscreen, the benefits of using tretinoin will be nullified (or even be worse than not using tretinoin) by the damage from the sun.

What is Tretinoin?

Tretinoin is the generic version of Retin-A, the strongest topical vitamin A derivative. It was originally created to treat acne, but was discovered to be one of the most affective topical anti-aging products! Tretinoin can be found as a cream, gel, or liquid.

It can be offered in some countries over the counter, but many countries require a prescription to acquire it.

How does it work?

Tretinoin increases the cellular turnover of skin cells, which slows as we age. It can even stimulate collagen production.

When is the right time to start Tretinoin for anti-aging? Am I too young as a (20-something, 30-something, 40-something) to start using Tretinoin?

This is a personal choice, but you can pretty much start as early as you want. Once you begin using tretinoin, it is best to continue to use it to maintain its anti-aging benefits unless you are pregnant.

If you want to start using Tretinoin for anti-aging in your early twenties, you definitely can! Some people say to wait until your mid to late twenties to begin because anything before that is too harsh on the skin, but you can definitely start before.

While tretinoin is harsh on the skin and can cause side effects like purging and peeling, it was originally created to treat acne in teenagers. Doctors can prescribe it to patients as young as 10 or 12 years old! The people who start tretinoin young for ace can usually safely use tretinoin for the majority of their lives.

Keep in mind that while the majority of people using tretinoin get used to it and stop reacting with dramatic side-effects, some people’s skin may never be able to tolerate tretinoin.

It varies from person to person you should discuss it with your dermatologist beforehand, especially if you skin is sensitive or extremely dry. (It is also vital to wear sunscreen everyday while on tretinoin.

Again, sunscreen is the most important anti-aging product.)

Personally, I kind of wish that I started using tretinoin earlier. (Also that I wore sunscreen regularly when I was a kid and teen. *shakes fist at past me*)

But you may never want to use tretinoin and that’s fine too! You might not want to deal with the inconvenient side effects or you might not want to participate in society’s obsession with eternal youth. There are also other effective anti-aging products in the world that aren’t tretinoin.

Am I too old to start using Tretinoin?

Absolutely not. Tretinoin will still speed up your skin’s cellular turnover and has been shown to actually reverse signs of aging!

It’s not a miracle product that will suddenly make you look 20 again, but it can help soften fine lines and hyperpigmentation.

For some people, tretinoin doesn’t do much to help with hyperpigmentation. They usually find other products (like niacinamide, vitamin c, azeliac acid, ect) to fade hyperpigmentation.

You can start your anti-aging journey any time!

The Importance of Patch-Testing

I bought a lotion with spf from La Roche-Posay and was too excited to patch test. Moisturizer and sunscreen in one? My wait time before starting my morning was cut in half!

Y’all...I should have patch tested. The lotion was made for sensitive skin but I was definitely allergic to it because it made my entire face bright red (I didn’t notice until later in the day because I wasn’t looking in the mirror)

And my face was a little itchy which was annoying but not the end of the world. But y’all...when I washed my face that shit HURT. My face was burning and I couldn’t even use my normal skincare products after because it heightened the burning sensation! I ended up washing off the serum and switching to my (luckily) very sensitive skin friendly babies Missha Time Revolution Artemisia Essence and Be Plain Cicaful Ampoule. Then the gentle but very great Zeroid Intensive Cream.

My skin still hurts a little and I’m concerned that this will last a while...please let me go back to my fun serums and actives...

So remember to patch test! Or else you’ll be a very sad lobster in pain...
