Another reference to my attack dog parallel theory I have going on in my brain (I was in the Hannibal fandom for so long I am a sucker for metaphors) is when Henry sees Istvan for the first time, Istvan tells him “Don’t bark at me, you dog! Who the hell do you think you are?”. There’s other references to him referring to them as dogs but in this moment you can see that Istvan holds Henry in similar regards to Erik- they’re both the mangy attack dogs whilst Hans and Istvan are the two held in higher regard. Almost like he’s telling Henry he isn’t good enough to speak to him- he’s not HIS attack dog, so he has no right to bark at him. Hans then backs him up before Erik comes in to get Istvan. Istvan is blabbering similarly to Hans whilst Erik and Henry are in full fight or flight. I love silly nobles and their stupid egos and their beefy attack dog boys.
I’m no artist but I am a writer. So to me this is my take on the whole Isterik and Hansry parallel. One nobleman who they hold on a golden pedestal away from danger, dedicate their existence to keeping safe and happy, loving with all they have- all whilst they are loyal attack dogs. Erik went insane after Istvan died not only because of his deep love for him, but because he spent his existence keeping anything from the man on that pedestal far away. He’s the feral stray dog with no purpose now. His life was Istvan, Istvan’s needs, istvans love. And now the only thing left is to avenge him. Henry too would go insane if he were in Erik’s shoes, we seen what he did over a sword. If Erik would have killed Hans, Henry would be the same feral dog walking in circles with no idea what to do other than to BITE.
