as sort of a cheat sheet for people who aren't animal savvy:

-a wild animal like a serval or a fox or a wolf in someone's house is always going to be unethical

-when you factor in animals like, idk corn snakes, that typically thrive in captivity and have been captive bred for a long time then you get some wiggle room but it is exceedingly complicated and many species that are extremely common in the pet trade come from questionable at best sources. so if you're unsure, it's probably best to just keep scrolling.

-be wary of almost all sanctuaries and rescues. it is, most of the time, code for "this is my private menagerie that i don't want to get yelled at for having"

-save a fox, may she rest in peace, was one of these

-being a biologist or working with animals professionally does not magically make someone having a fox or a raccoon a good idea. people who should know better still make shitty selfish decisions

-i am not a wildlife rehabber, but from what I've heard it's generally frowned upon for rehabbers to treat the animals they're working with like pets and it's also a huge no-no to post content on social media that can be misconstrued as exotic pet content because this drives the demand up.

-white tigers and golden tabby tigers are unethical to breed. period. be very very wary of any organization that shows cats with these mutations without making it clear that they shouldn't be bred

-pet opossums are almost always fed shitty diets which is why they have that weird googly eyed look. what you're seeing are not the whites of the animal's eyes, they're fat deposits behind the eyes sort of pushing through. it's not cute, it is a sign of neglect.
