INTRO

Hi! I’m Skiyron. Not much to know about me, besides the fact that writing’s my passion! I hope to post works that I can be proud of one day. For now, things are pretty hush-hush around here.

I’m tired of these losers. I really am.

I don’t mind the SatoSugu ship, but what I really can’t stand is the FANDOM. Bunch of pretentious assholes, they’ll hate on anyone who don’t have the same vision as them. Their main argument against GojoHime? “Utahime hates Gojo— it’s misogynistic to pair her with him.” My response to that is usually laughter; as if they care about Utahime. Characters hating each other has never deterred people from their favourite BL ships. “He hates him, so you shouldn’t ship them!” is not something that holds the same weight in BL shipping spaces; it is in fact one of the most popular tropes. BL fans love that kind of tension and will ship away. Countless examples of popular pairings with that trope can be thought of this instant. Hell, people have never needed a reason to ship anything in the first place— characters can be in the same frame for a split second and you’ll have a hundred ao3 entries made overnight. These days people act as though you need a detailed shipping manifesto just to justify your preferences and it’s ridiculous. Let people do what they want. Let people have fun. I’m tired of the superior attitude.

Emily Climbs Book Club

The votes are in, and for another LM Montgomery read we’ll be doing the Emily Climbs Book Club in October-November!

I thought about how to set up the reading days, and even though the chapters aren’t as short as in The Blue Castle, I think it’s simplest to still have Mondays through Fridays be reading days – I found it much easier to keep track of!

However, I’m going to mix it up a little by splitting some of the chapters consisting mainly of Emily’s diary entries in half. This serves two purposes: it spreads out the reading a bit and gives more space to discuss things, and – with the book taking place over three and a half years, and the diary entries covering some longer periods within that – it gives a better sense of the passage of time in Emily’s life.

To avoid the book club overlapping with Canadian Thanksgiving, I’m going to start it the week after, so the reading schedule is:

I love this book – it’s such a delightful mix of the Gothic and the real, Emily is my favourite LM Montgomery heroine, and it’s more about the journey of becoming a writer than any other other books. The Emily series was written around the same time as The Blue Castle – in the 1920s – and has a lot of both similar and different themes.

I look forward to travelling through this book with you and hearing all of your thoughts on it!

My hands slip from my eyes. I can see now. Better than before. Worse than now. Curtain quivers like yanked silk, I want to tear it apart— it’s stifling. I didn’t think much of my mother’s words— they were cheap, worth the same as the dregs of urine souring the steps up to our seedy flat. I didn’t think much of her hopes, either. Whatever they were, I couldn’t recognise them. They had a foreign, dreamlike texture to them, like congealed milk sliding from the mouth of the carton and onto my flaking fingers.

I don’t get all this “Dad Kakashi” nonsense. The guy’s a depressed, apathetic killer who could only briefly entertain his role as a teacher by self-inserting himself and his own (dead) teammates into Team 7!

So one thing I wish was talked about more by people has got to be to do with Naruto’s unhealthy fixation on Sasuke. I truly do find their relationship to be fascinating, there’s nothing like it in any other media that I’ve consumed. The whole “brothers” thing…. I’ll tell you I don’t appreciate it. I don’t find it to be a fitting label. Not because I ship them— I don’t. Though it’s easy to understand the hype around the pairing, and when you compare them with other male friendships in anime/manga or in real life (typically guys form very casual platonic relationships with each other) it’s not a shock that people find them absolutely flaming. But no, that’s not my take away from their story, and again, “brothers” just doesn’t feel right— because both these interpretations sort of paint their relationship as good and pure and wonderful and full of self-sacrifice…. It’s so obviously problematic, guys! And that’s interesting! Why don’t we address it more?

Their relationship is largely fuelled by Naruto’s unhealthy attachment towards Sasuke. Sasuke was the first among his peers to accept Naruto, and when Sasuke left the village it felt to Naruto a sincere rejection of him and that initial acceptance. When Sasuke left he sent a message of “You weren’t enough to get me to stay.” And that’s what kickstarted Naruto’s obsession, his quest to prove to Sasuke that he’s wrong! “I am enough! You do need me!” is what Naruto determinedly wants to get across, and does so by stepping up to the role of Sasuke’s lone saviour. For a large portion of the series Naruto is greatly driven by this selfish desire, and he refuses to accept that maybe, just maybe, Sasuke has his own path that Naruto can’t follow.

Naruto simply didn’t understand Sasuke, and his attempts at doing so were poor. It wasn’t until he lost Jiraiya that Naruto came to understand even a fraction of Sasuke’s anger. So the quest changes to Naruto wanting to save Sasuke from that pain, and this is ever so slightly an improvement— but it’s still so damned selfish! Rather, this “noble” front merely sits atop that original obsession and hurt, double the power that will help drag Sasuke back home where he belongs!

Naruto still doesn’t understand Sasuke, because he believes that since he somehow managed to keep it together (?) so should Sasuke. Naruto continues his attempts to rope Sasuke in using his so called moral compass, and Sasuke is just gonna have to deal with it, though he stopped identifying with that moral compass a long time ago.

I’ve seen people give Naruto plenty of lashings because of this, but you know what? I like it. I would have appreciated Naruto’s character a LOT less if he truly were that golden selfless messiah from the heavens that can purify the hearts of the wicked. What people treat as Naruto’s shining point (his fixation and relentless drive) is actually a pretty big flaw that I wish people considered more. It’s SO intriguing. Surprise surprise, the traumatised orphan can’t for the life of him form normal and healthy relationships, he just HAS to chase them across the world the minute they move on to something new of course of course.

WHY is Kishimoto allowing this Live Action bs to be greenlit?! They NEED to cancel it NOW! Can’t even begin to list the potential issues…. We all know that anime x la have never meshed well. Only reason One Piece la turned out half decent was because Oda had his foot on the producers’ necks. But we don’t know how involved Kishimoto is gonna be for this abomination. It’s going to be a disaster, for all we know!!
