In all seriousness, a lot of the tragedy of Marineford for me is that Luffy is just as determined here as he is during every other arc. The reader has been conditioned to accept statements like this as fact, even as the Straw Hats face impossible situations. I touched on it a little during Impel Down, but Luffy seems to go beyond simply believing in himself. It's like he wills what he wants into existence, no matter how illogical or improbable his desires may be. It's why he's still saying he'll save Ace even as he gets his hands melted off by Magellan's poison, and it's that iron will that will lead him to eventually being King of the Pirates.
Oda subverts that expectation by actually having Luffy fail in the worst way possible, and it's little wonder that when Ace dies Luffy just breaks.

my respect for jayce talis is insurmountable, like his plan initially was very much just to shut off the hexgates and bludgeon things with his hammer to stop viktor but when he got sucked into the astral plane he just went "well plan b, interdimensional love confession it is" and it fucking worked
