now hear me out.... BUT-
think about lucy taking off her engagement ring and leaving it behind as a clue for tim to find at a crime scene to parallel when she tossed her ring in day of death.
8x11 Y'all Melissa O'Neil DESERVES AN EMMY EUEUEUEU Her performance never ceases to amaze. I'm raising my hands to the sky shouting from the rooftops that she deserves every award ever.
I'm really glad we're getting to see Lucy reintegrate herself into her work, and how she and Tim are navigating that from both their personal and occupational relationships. It's a little concerning how my heart rate went up a tick at the parking lot scene BUT!! THEY COMMUNICATED!!! NATURE IS HEALING!!! ASSOCIATIONS ARE CHANGING!!! THE PARKING LOT IS GOOD!!! Anyway, I think Lucy and Tim as individuals & their shared moments were very good this episode. Smitty made me smile, the baseball made me joyous, and Melissa looked so pretty in the first scene which reminded me that I am, in fact, queer.
WESLEY MY BELOVED NAAAAAAAAAAAUR. I don't know how it happened or when but at some point he became one of my favorite characters. He deserves the whole world, why must they put him through the ringer. Pookie, don't go drinking your stress away. If we get a season 2 scare again I am going to have a heart attack. And so is Angela. Who, by the way, is also an amazing character who deserves the world and all good things <3
I am still not very invested in what Bailey and Nolan have going on!! They are still blorbos, and I don't necessarily mind their characters or story. I think John Nolan is (was? the end of 8x09 with him blowing of Grey for Bailey has me squinting) a big hearted and well meaning character. Bailey is- well, she's good at everything and we never get to see her work for it (or at least I can't remember seeing it) but she's still blorbo thanks to the power of headcanons.
Skip Tracer Randy is fine. I thought the southern accent gag was funny! But, and this goes for Nolan and Bailey as well, compared to the rest of the characters and stories going on, I didn't really care for him.
Nyla Harper I fear for you, don't go through the ringer Queen you're too silly.
Grey and Luna aren't talking </3 Therapy is cool. Couples therapy, too. Maybe they should try it. No, but in all seriousness, I hope they work something out. Maybe find Luna the same position at a different hospital or smthn. When you go back and watch earlier seasons, the two of them are such a strong pair filled with joyous whimsy. I can't survive another divorce arc b/w the sillies-
Hopes for the rest of the season?
We haven't really seen Lucy's community "lifting her up" (i think that was the quote? Details) yet, besides Tim. Though he's to be expected. Celina has shown concern, and we saw glimpses of it from others at the end of 8x10, but I'd really like to see the other characters rallying behind her like good friends would. Give her Celina and Angela and Nyla! Give her Wesley! Give her John! Give her Grey! Bring back Tamara, lord knows girlie would be RIGHT at her side as soon as she found out! Give her Genny and Joy! Give her Miles! Hell, give her Thorsen, too!! Lucy Chen is an amazing person who deserves to be recognized for the good she's done and know that she is loved.
I am on my hands and knees cowering, praying, begging that after Tim Bradford gets beaten up, he and Lucy both conclude that they're ready to get married. Especially after Tim's speech at the beginning of this episode, I think it'd be the perfect time for both of them to really, really recognize that "Oh, you are the person who I want to spend the rest of my life with. I can't see a future without you in it," They already live together. They know they love each other. I don't care what excuse it is, even if it's, "I want everyone else to know that I love you fully," JUST LET THEM BE WED EUEUEUEU ^ (If this is to occur, then Angela must be the Best Woman or Best Maid or whatever they decide to call her. It is a must. Also a must but less so than the previous, Tamara must be Lucy's Maid of Honor. I will riot otherwise.)
Give Wesley good things. He deserves good things!!! He's a good guy!! A great husband!! A father!!! He's Wesley Evers!!! You wouldn't hurt Wesley Evers, would you?
o7 Praying Miles makes it to P2. He's had it rough, but he!! Will cross the finish line!! Hopefully!!
Based off the promo, I think Spy Games might be the documentary episode this time around? Potentially? That's what I'd thought at first, but some of the camera angles have me thinking otherwise. Guess we'll just have to wait and see!
Pardon the long winded stream of consciousness that I call a post. I am very much hyper fixated on this show and have no other outlet for my joyous whimsy that I'm certain won't result in me crumpled and burned on the floor.
We stay coping with 8x10 by headcanoning chenford moments prior to it 😌
I am of the firm belief that if Chris hadn't been in Lucy's apartment at the end of 5x01, then Lucy and Tim would've ended up sat on the couch, drinking beers, not talking for 10-20 minutes.
Because they're here. They're both here, in her apartment, on her couch, oriented the same way they'd been in 4x22. So they meant to do something, right? That's what this was. Did the other want to? Lucy had invited him in, yes. And he, after hesitating, entered. That meant something, right?
So why hadn't anything happened?
The answer is fairly uncomplicated. They both had partners. They were in relationships. Before them was a line they both saw and, for a moment, wanted to cross. But then Tim lets out a chuckle and asks what they're doing, and Lucy joins his laughter as she admits she doesn't really know.
And they talk. For a few hours, they chat about nothing and then about everything. And their intentions upon entering Lucy's apartment are left to the wayside. They don't cross the line. They sit across from eachother, a few feet from it on either side, talking about what's between them and what it might mean.
Yknow what I can't wait for? To see Lucy Chen laugh again. We know she's going to be in the pits of agony and despair for a lil bit, but just imagine how much more satisfying that first genuine laugh will be as a result.
For some time after the Westview incident, her smile would be pained, strained and exhausted and weak. Never quite the same as it'd been before. And everyone at Mid-wilshire could see it. So when she does laugh again, I hope it's over something so very silly. My Chenford bias knows no bounds so maybe its caused by Tim having to haggle with Smitty or getting caught in some ridiculous situation. Whatever causes it doesn't matter too much, really. Because it's the sound of her erupting into a fit of true, genuine giggles that matters. It's the broad grin on her face that's so wide her cheeks will ache later. And every officer will feel lighter at sight. And every one who knows her will be thrilled to see her smile again.
Is it obvious that I like Hurt Comfort? Especially the comfort? Anyway yeah no I hope we get a scene like this and if we don't then I will headcanon it for all eternity.
The Rookie 8.10 REDUX
Okay so having watched the 48 min version I have thoughts. And oh boy did the editors make some mistakes with what they cut and what they kept.
Why do I feel like Tim's bring a hamster to school thing was some kind of Alexi thing where he keeps bringing his kids to work?! Thing is, Dash was okay in the past two episodes he was in because his character served a purpose. This episode he could have been cut completely because he did not add anything to the narrative. He didn't cause them to be at Westview, he did not uncover the reason for the "zombies", he did not save the say. All he did was stroll around, lose his glasses, take weird zoom in and zoom out shots, and he stole time away from other characters. By cutting him, the whole Westview part could have been tighter and could have had more tension. Nyla, Nolan and Miles could have seen the woman (from the pool) sprint past while being chased and agreed to split up so someone could rescue her while the others tried to get reception - and then Nolan could have found her in the pool hiding) The scene with Nyla, Lucy and Celina after roll call talking about Miles was so good. Loved Celina trying to get Nyla to ease up on Miles. Loved Lucy checking in on his training. I liked that scene. I am going to be in the minority when I say that I'm glad they cut the Tim, Lucy and Celina scene. That scene was not good from an optics perspective. Yes, it was very cute and chenford and LIBF Tim stepped up to the forefront BUT he's in uniform, he's WC and by saying he should ride with Lucy and let Celina ride on her own, he's implying that Sergeant Lucy Chen can't handle herself and that P2 Celina can be thrown to the wolves. Not the intention of what he means of course, but personally, if my boss did that, I'd be fuming.
I love the idea of the scene, but not the execution which is why I'm glad they cut it. Personally, I would have preferred a scene where Tim admitted he had a bad feeling but instead of saying he'd ride with Lucy while Celina goes solo, he could have advised Lucy to take the Bradford special. Which would have indicated his feelings and been a nice call back to season 1. And Celina could have asked about it giving us some Chenford banter about how "it saved her life during her first year on the job." (because I love nods to previous episodes and storylines and little dialogue bits) and Lucy could roll her eyes, suppress a smile but pat his arm and tell him they'll be careful. Something like that. It would give us concerned, bad vibes Tim without Tim forgetting he's watch commander. Loved Miles and Nyla's conversations this episode. And Miles did a great job dealing with the zombies. He got his own little hero/action moment. I did like the doll scene, but it could have been cut to get us the scenes that were more character development focused too if Alexi was so desperate to keep his chase scenes and zoom scenes and drone scenes.
Lucy mentioned her parents?! I said this to a moot that I'd have loved that comment because you know Lucy's parents will absolutely come down on the wrong side of that conversation. Why cut that?! We literally had Lucy say she didn't speak to her parents anymore and her comment about them judging it would remind people of WHY she doesn't. They would blame her. They would imply she murdered him. That she should have found another way. Short of freezing time and removing the knife from the guy and tying him up, I dunno how that would work but they'd imply it. They'd make her feel worse. I still love the chenford of this episode. There really are no notes. I mean we have amazing actors for these two characters, they just really make you believe every scene they're in. Tim guiding Lucy through what was required for the IA review and keeping everything above board and standing as a silent support even though it had to be killing him was fantastic. A+. Lucy just broke my heart. The flash backs, the dissociating the look, it's so well done. She's completely disconnected until that moment when she sits on the couch, sits with what she's done and then it hits her and she cries, which is a good first step to processing what's happened. She's taken a life. This is an indelible line in the sand, a before and after moment.
And I love that Tim gave her that space when she asked for it. Initially she agrees it's time for bed but then she walks it back, realising that no, she can't pretend everything is normal. And he doesn't over rule her, he doesn't ignore her request, he hears her when she says she'll be in in a bit and if after that bit, he'll more than likely come find her.
So yeah, that scene was good. I don't think it could have been made better (except maybe Kojo but... no after rewatching, she needed to be alone. That was her moment. No one else's and it wasn't the time for softness or levity, it was a time for pain and weeping and heartbreak because it is an important moment. I'm also glad they ended on Lucy and that moment and didn't try to jar us with a switch to someone else having a normal night or flirting with their SO which the show is known for. They do love the tonal whiplash in this series.) Why would Grey go to IA to get Nyla out of uniform? Wade you are NOT watch commander anymore. They are really not selling this being a permanent position for Tim so if he goes back to patrol it will not be a surprise or a big twist for me because they have not Tim do his job without Grey undermining him in some way every episode. (and this is not Grey trying to do that, it's the writers and the optics. God, they really don't understand the optics)
Quick question: Anyone know how Tim could still hear Lucy on the radio when she'd put it back on her belt???
A brief analysis of those final scenes and why they worked, even if people didn’t like them—
(side note: I’ve watched the extended cut on Crave, and it definitely helped with the flow of the storylines, although I still had all of these thoughts last night on first watch)
This episode really put into perspective how much of a difficult position Tim and Lucy have put themselves in with him being her Watch Commander. I know a lot of people are upset with how distant they seemed at the end of the episode, but it made so much sense— both for their storylines and their characters
I'm seeing clips popping up across twitter of even more extended scenes/cut content from the live release/streaming release of 8x10 and we. were. robbed. The showrunners hate us specifically, actually. There's a moment between Celina, Harper, Lucy & Miles that was cut. An extended conversation b/w Harper and Miles that was very genuine, however brief it was. There was the Celina, Lucy & Tim scene. There was an establishing shot showing Celina and Lucy going to look for the Westview-bound missing units. There was a brief shot showing Tim getting in his shop to go after Lucy. There was a brief bit of dialogue between Lucy and Nolan where he tells her to contact family! And he offers to do it for her when she states she can't speak to them right now!! They took SO much from us and FOR WHY??? All of it would've been so good!!! A few words, a passing phrase, even the smallest glance can inform so much about a relationship and a story. Lucy's story and Melissa's performance were the highlights of this episode for me (And Wesley <3) but I would've loved the rest so much more with those small moments between the cast.
So you mean to tell me that there was a perfectly good scene that not only established Celina and Lucy riding together for the day, but also showed us Tim's concerns about the day? And his worry for his partner? And it's only available on a streaming platform in Canada?
The showrunners hate us THAT IS CRIMINAL. Yes, we are smart people. We can infer that Tim's greatest concern has been and will likely always be Lucy. We've seen it before! But that doesn't mean we don't want to see it again!!
Including that scene somewhere toward the first half of the episode immediately sets up the tone that something is going to go wrong. But not what. And that anticipation would've made THAT moment so much more intense. That, and it would've given Celina and Lucy a little more presence in the episode.
And the hug between Nolan and Bradford WHERE DID THAT GO?? I can't see a way in which it makes sense to include in the episode based on what we're given but I DON'T CARE!! I wanna see Nolan & Braford hurt comfort just as much as I do Lucy/Tim 🥺
My best headcanon? There's a moment between exiting Westview and taking Lucy to the hospital where Tim has to lock in as WC and direct the process of rounding up the "zombies" so that they can be treated. And he's doing a good job of keeping things together, but he's always glancing over to the ambulance where Lucy is being looked at and wanting nothing more than to be beside her. And Nolan, being the big hearted guy he is, checks in on/reassures Tim. And they hug. And it's rrally sweet. They are the friends ever WHAT WE COULD'VE HAD 🥺😭
Never did I think I would be hyperfixating on the cop show. But 8 seasons and 2 to 3 weeks of binging and rebinging later, and here we are. The characters are so silly, they are rattling in my brain 24/7.
BUT Not why I'm here. Rambling my thoughts about 8x10 (and s8 in general)!! Because!! I can!!! Have I seen the full episode yet? No. But clips on social media have filled me in on the important parts 😌
Spoilers for 8x10 below the cut
Something I would LOVE to see in the potential season 3 is more conversations between Belle and Hetty. Hetty is such a passionate and level-headed character. Let's be honest, she carries that hospital on her BACK most of the time, with the Prof. being drunk at every hour of the day, Dr. Sneed probably seconds away from a breakdown (at least in the 6 months b/w 1 & 2), and Jack off for some/most times of the day to gamble, do crime, or visit Belle. We only know so much about her. I've inferred that she has an unrequited interest in Jack throughout the first season. We know she's catholic. We know she cares deeply for Rotty. She's intelligent, sarcastic and blunt. But we don't know how she came to be that person, which is SUCH a shame. And I love me some good show, don't tell. But I ALSO love me strong female duos. There's honestly so much potential for Belle and Hetty, both in developing a friendship inside the hospital, but also outside of it! Through that, we might get to learn more about Hetty alongside Belle. (If they do take that direction, I hope they include something, a scene or moment that establishes that Jack is already aware of Hetty's background. They've told each other they're the best thing/friend to come from Port Victory but like- it's SO hard to believe that when we see so little of their actual relationship.) Bonus points if Fanny is involved. I could see Fanny threatening a man for/with Hetty and that visual makes me joyous.
If/When the 3rd season rolls around, I don't know for certain if they'd pick up immediately where the 2nd left off. Specifically with Fagin in a coffin 6 feet under. Given the 6 month time-skip between 1 and 2, I imagine there might be some length of time between 2 and 3? Can't say for sure. But I cannot stop thinking about how the characters would reunite at the hospital. Belle enters the building with Jack and- well, Hetty and the Fox Family were the only ones made aware of his departure (iirc?), so it'd really just be them relieved to see he hadn't left. Then Boxer comes stumbling in with a grievously wounded Sneed, so Jack and Belle must operate. But as they're in the middle of it, the gang comes in and goes to Jack all like, "Hey, sorry. Fagin is dead," And Jack just kind of exhales a laugh and goes, "No he isn't," And the lot of them begin to bicker until someone admits that Fagin has been buried. And Jack, with his forearms stained with the blood of his injured and possibly dying coworker, shouts something along the lines of, "YOU BURIED HIM?!" Like- genuinely there would be so many moving pieces to that Season 3 intro. A series of new information coming forth and culminating in the emergency-operation on Dr. Sneed whilst the gang rushes to the burial plot where they boxed in a very much alive Fagin who grows ever closer to suffocating by the minute.
Adding to this, @/interdimensionalpancakes mentioned it could make for a Season 3 Opening and that made my gears TURN so much credit to them What I picture happening off screen before the intro beginning is Belle and Jack coming into that central corridor of the hospital from the entrance, Boxer and Sneed from the hall leading to the morgue, Rotty, Flashbang, Aputi (and Tim for bonus points) from the ward (No it doesn't make sense but this is a theater of the mind-), and the Fox family & Hetty from the top of the steps. Unanimously, the groups turn to where Boxer is trudging in with Sneed's bleeding-out person looking a little more than disheveled and have the collective realization of "oh shit, thats not good," as Boxer calls for immediate aid. And THEN we get to the actual opening.
The scene opens on a quiet, empty operating room. Dusts floats about the air, caught in the sunlight filtering through the windows. Maybe the faintest intro to a song has begun, soft and slowly with maybe something bass-like in the background slowly building anticipation. And then the doors to the room are thrown open, the music picks up sudden and loud and Jack and Belle are front and center with the arms of one Dr. Sneed thrown over both their shoulders as they race him to the operating table. Following behind them in a cacophony of poor attempts at communication is the rest of the cast.
Boxer has his arm slung around the shoulder of Aputi, trying catch the attention of the governor to tell him of Prof.'s plots as Hetty tends to him. The gang are trying to tell Jack (and Fanny) of Fagin's fate as he's helping lay Sneed on the operating table. Edmund is trying to speak to Belle and Jack about the pair of them and only towards the end begins to give Boxer his attention.
Concern and shock rise when Boxer declares what Prof. has done, and it's only made louder when it's learned that Fagin has died. And whilst Edmund is trying to sort out how to proceed with Boxer (Belle suggesting they ask Jane), Jack is telling the gang to go and dig up Fagin before he's suffocated and/or crushes (Fanny accompanies them, maybe for the shiggles). All the while, Sneed is being pulled back from the brink.
And somewhere in there, likely at the end, the title card would drop. Does it make sense? In places, I hope. Would it work well on television? If a director were to shoot it, then yes I hope it would. I don't know how they'd transition out of it, but boy would it be funny.
Something I'd love to see is more interactions between Fanny and Jack because they probably certainly maybe will be in-laws by the end of Season 3. There is potential there for the most chaotic friendship known to man. Imagine it, Fanny and Jack at the center of a ploy doctored by Fagin that is undoubtably dangerous, reckless and lacking thought. And both of them are trying to ensure the plan goes off safely because they're in the company of someone Lady Belle cherishes deeply. But in doing so they're also getting in each others way which frustrates the other to no end, so they start bickering again. Perhaps the episode's central conflict has to do with Lady Belle, and they're also disagreeing on how to navigate the situation. So when they plot is, by some miracle, a success and they are winding down for the evening, the pair find some sort of common ground and recognize what the other is trying to say/do. And then, inevitably, Belle finds out and chews out the both of them (and Fagin because I need me more Belle & Fagin bickering) for, yet again, partaking in ill-considered schemes. I think Fanny could also go to Jack as a kind of confidant of sorts (and potentially vice versa). She doesn't have many (any?) male friends whom she can speak to who she is, at least to my knowledge, not trying to wed, and we don't see her go to her parents often for advice of any kind. I don't know if her romantic pursuits might re-ignite into the 3rd season (having been lost in favor of crime for the latter half of the 2nd from what I can see (still on my rewatch)) but if they do, I would give anything to see her go to Jack and be like, "Is [insert person here} any good?" and him going, so very bluntly, "Your sister would strangle me if I told you to go anywhere near [insert person here]."
THEY COULD BE BESTIES, TRUST, TRUST
I think it's a need that the score for the Artful Dodger, both season 1 and 2 (and eventually 3 god allowing), be released. And I don't mean the orchestral cover of Cheap Thrills or the licensed music that they snuck in throughout the seasons (I am inferring they chose to include said music in season 2 specifically with the hope that it might garner more viewership or something). I am referring to the plucked strings and violins that hum softly in the background when Jack and Belle are together and it's calm and warmth between them. I am referring to the not quite up-beat but not so slow track with cellos and horns and some instrument that I can't quite identify that plays when characters are moving through the streets of Port Victory with no stress or intensity, only a destination and a day to go about. Those are beautifully composed and I would listen to them on loop while studying or sleeping given the opportunity.
Crazy idea for Artful Dodger season 3 🤞, since Fanny’s entire character arc in season 2 is her getting into crime I think in season 3 she’ll become the new underworld crime boss (since Fagin’s got to lay low given he’s supposed to be dead). So Inspector Boxer is chasing this new mystery leader of this criminal gang but they keep managing to stay one step ahead.
Here’s the real crazy idea though, Fanny has to get closer to Boxer to get the intel she needs to stay ahead of the law. They get closer and start to catch feelings and suddenly Fanny is in love with man hunting her down while Boxer is in love with the crime boss he’s trying to dethrone.
I don’t know why I thought of this it just popped into my head, but it would be nice for Dodge and Lady Belle not to have all the relationship drama next season.
I have just noticed that the Artful Dodger was taken off the top of Disney+'s home page. That is CRIMINAL. They released all the episodes at once too. They don't think it's going to be successful and THAT angers me to my core. This is evil and villainous and it must be amended, tell me dear fandom goers how do we riot, how do we advocate for our silly little series
Noting the distinct lack in spoiler tags I am assuming most if not the entire tumblr side of the Artful Dodger fandom (and lets be honest we are the backbone of the fandom) has already seen the new season in full. Which is hilarious to me.
Anyway, if we get a season 3 (and gods above I hope we get a season 3) I am on my hands and knees hoping that we get to learn more about the supporting cast. Especially the hospital gang. Especially Hetty and Dr. Sneed. I would like to know how Hetty came to be a nurse! I want to know where she came from! How does she know Rotty? Why had Sneed and Prof. neglected to make her Head Nurse for so long? She deserves the world and then some give her all the good things. I want to know what it was like for Dr. Sneed growing up. I want to know how he, Belle and Fanny got on. I want to know how he became a doctor, I want to know why Edmund paid for his education! I want to know how Tim's kid is doing!!! I want to know if she and Red are living their best life!! I want to see what happens with Prof. and WHY it's happening! And why its only just become relevant (or at least i want to know how the writers intend to mold a reason into the plot).
I want to know what happened with that platinum bar (I cannot remember if that was ever found), I want to know if that machine Jack and Tim are making will ever be finished.
I want to see Fanny being super cool and intimidating!!! It was extremely attractive!!! Give me more please!!!
Oh and if Fagin ever gets dug up, that's a pretty important one. I want to see how the others respond to him returning from the dead!!!
