i can’t believe i didn’t think of this before but even though some of the changes in the remount hint at the show itself being a retelling of the events or a loop (emma’s hair, the same characters in both the opening number and inevitable etc), there is one glaring problem with that interpretation.

charlotte.

charlotte dies before act 2, in hidgens’ bunker.

in the original production, jamie changes into nora for inevitable, but in the remount she changes into charlotte. who is already dead. everyone else around her are characters from the opening number who we haven’t seen die on stage (as their resurrected hivemind selves, as we did see bill die pre-hive mind), so there’s plausible deniability. but charlotte laid dead on stage for a good 15 minutes at the end of act 2.

so how are we supposed to interpret her in inevitable?

is someone else “playing” charlotte for the audience after her death? because there is the detail of charlotte’s shirt… in the opening number and inevitable, she is wearing a blank sweater. for the rest of the show, she is wearing the sweater with the cat on it. so, is the opening number and inevitable actually someone else stepping in to play charlotte in the story? even though it is jamie? but charlotte is wearing that same shirt for the first scene at the office (understandably, the scene begins directly after the last lines of the opening song), so we do hear her speak and act as herself in that outfit too. i almost wish they were able to slap a kitten picture on jamie’s chest when they go off stage for the chairs to preserve that distinction for the speaking scenes.

i can’t believe i hadn’t thought of it before but charlotte really makes the two numbers and the retelling theory all the more complicated and interesting.
