it was a crazy show tonight.
As someone with an extremely traumatic childhood who was kind of a terrible person for many years because of it, the way starlight is "reformed" is honestly really accurate. (You're actually going to have to read this because I know that sounds awful)
Let's start with her telling Twilight what happened. Her reasoning is just scratching the surface of what was going on, she clearly had no support from anyone after Sunburst left, and when you're not ready to face the full reality of a situation it's so much easier to blame one person or one thing than accept any responsiblity for your actions or acknowledge the failings of someone you have a more complex relationship with, like a parent. Twilight was clearly the first person to ever ask her why she turned out like this, so all of her pent up emotions from years of holding it in came out, and she was finally able to realise how much she messed up. You can't always realise the damage your actions have to others until someone gives you a wakeup call.
Destroying the world might seem extreme to some, but plenty of people have destroyed their own "worlds" without realising it until it's far too late to pick up the peices, and for a lot of people that's either when they decide to get themselves together or decide they can never change in a self fulfilling prophecy.
Twilight gave Starlight a chance, and sure, that may only be because she knew how dangerous Starlight would be if she didn't change, but that's all she really needed. Being around people who actually care, and want you to grow as a person can significantly improve things once you actually come to terms with the fact that bad things happen and that it doesn't give you an excuse to be a bad person. You can't be around people who enable bad behavior and expect to change. Her guilt and fear that she'll fail and this new group will hate her is extremely real, and her falling back into old habits when things get too stressful is accurate. It takes her a whole season to "reform" and even then she's not perfect, and honestly it just makes me really happy that she's in a kids show. People in real life can't be reformed with a zap, and they did a really good job of showing things from her perspective.
