Been trapped in this tiny city,
For almost thirty years.
The same places, the same people,
Everyone’s seen my tears.
The same old sights, the same old story,
Relived every single day.
It feels safe, it feels familiar,
But it’s long turned my heart grey.
My brain has me locked up tightly,
Anxiety and autism are my chains.
Trapped in a prison of my own making,
It’s forever got me fearfully shaking.
A family who loves me but not the world,
Racism and darkness ripe.
Growing up to find the light for myself,
Was such a difficult fight.
When you don’t understand the world,
It’s tough to make friends.
It’s scary and confusing,
Lots of twists and dead ends.
Yet it’s the one thing that’ll save you,
So you try your very best,
But when the odds are against you,
You just end up more stressed.
Your options are limited because of your brain,
Everything you do is always such a big drain.
Your head tells you your lazy and you don’t deserve a thing,
And all the negative surrounding you just makes you give in.
Your brains got you locked up and has thrown away the key,
There’s nothing you can do except to go to sleep.
Yet you dream of the chains coming loose,
A hand reaching out of that darkness,
Pulling you free of the abuse.
A warm hug or a ruffle of your hair,
And a voice that softy says “I care.”
When you can’t believe or love yourself,
You believe that no-one else does too.
But deep in your heart you hope and pray,
To give yourself reason to fight for the next day.
Wanna see the world, wanna make friends,
Wanna try new things, wanna make amends.
Wanna try a Ferris wheel, wanna have a group hug,
Wanna gaming night, wanna stargaze above.
But when you’re trapped and confined,
By the limits of your own mind.
There’s only so much that you can do.
Unable to fend for yourself in life,
You come to think yourself doomed.
Who would put up with that?
That’s a lot of work.
You sound like a brat,
That’s a very bad quirk.
You’re not worth any love,
You’re a waste of space.
You’re something to get tired of,
You’re a sad, flawed case.
You can’t fight your battles,
Why should anyone else?
You get a case of the rattles,
And your brain just melts.
You’re just weak and lazy,
Not worth a thing.
Nobody likes a crazy,
Go, get in the bin.
When that voice is the only friend that you talk to,
And becomes a constant person in your life.
All that stuff that they say begins to feel true,
And it clouds up your brain with more strife.
Yet your circumstances keep you from seeking out the truth,
You’re trapped while you struggle to fight.
While your brain destroys any sign of your inner sleuth,
You’re left with the certainty it’s right.
So nothing changes except you get worse,
As the years continue to pass by.
Each day reminds you of this curse,
And that’s the life of Sky.
