I’m going to be posting some of my favorite selections from the Japanese underground over the next few posts. Japan’s music scene is as notorious and far out as their love industry and The Gerogerigege is no exception. I don’t really know much about them (nobody does) except that they sound like j-pop music sent through a garbage disposal. Enjoy! :)

Unru is the latest in a wave of newer black metal / crust punk bands that are making a lot of noise in the underground. Hailing from Germany, it sounds like they may be channeling some of the dark, urban sound pioneered by their countrymen Lantlos (about whom I’ve posted previously) into a warped and brutal crust punk epic. This is from a split with the French Paramnesia and is their second split after a demo in 2013. This unique of a sound this early in their career makes them definitely worth watching.

Progressive Power Metal band Angra have finally returned with a new album of techy, gorgeous sonic adventures. With new vocalist Fabio Lione at the helm, Angra seems to be still warming up with him to an extent but damn does he have some PIPES. This is probably my favorite track on the album and among the most epic so grab your goblet, warm up your Tiger Punch, and grow your hair to a typically socially unacceptable length before you take on this aguirre full of unknown and magical trials. Or just click play. But you’re missing out if you don’t have the goblet. \m/

As soon as I mention Entombedcore the first thing in most people's heads is Nails. Fronted by the savage Todd Jones, Nails started making waves with their Unsilent Death LP on Southern Lord. The intelligent composition and lyrics coupled with the straightforward brutality of the wall of hm-2 saturated guitars was enough to make Nails a mainstay in the hardcore scene almost overnight and "Tough as Nails" had a whole new meaning. This track is off their most recent album, Abandon All Life. When they played this live I literally had piles of bodies in the wake of my slam dancin \m/

Black Breath are hometown heroes for me, being from Bellingham. (aka the HAM) Probably the most shameless and unapologetic display of HM-2 Entombed worship RIPPING hardcore/crust punk, their 2012 album Sentenced to Life should be in your regular bedroom mosh sessions or you’re doin it wrong. Check out the title track whilst I sit here impatiently waiting for a new album and while you read some words about this band from hardcore sage and photographer extraordinaire  Jesus Martinez.

- "If you like to bang your fucking head, Black Breath is your band. Formed in the Pacific Northwest with members of hardcore acts such as Go It Alone, Blue Monday,Shook Ones, Get The Most and more, this band started in 2005/06. Their first EP was “Razor To Oblivion” was self-released and caught the attention of underground power house,Southern Lord. In 2010, they released possibly one of the best head banging albums of all time, ”Heavy Breathing." I put it in my CD player and it gave me the feels like Entombed’s Left Hand Path. With the opening track “Black Sin”, you immediately get it why punk rockers, metal heads, and hardcore dudes can connect with this band. My favorite track on this read is “I AM Beyond," the ending of this song has probably one of the heaviest breakdowns ever, if you ever get the chance to see this live, you will probably break your neck. This album established Black Breath nationwide by touring with bands such as Converge,Trap Them and more. In 2012, they released “Sentenced to Life." I feel like this album goes more “sludgy” and a more current feel but with everything you loved about Heavy Breathing. Home Of The Grave and Endless Corpse are my jams on this album. If you love Entombed, if you love moshing, if you love growing your hair out and headbanging. Black Breath is your shit, new album is currently under works so keep an eye out."----Jesus Martinez

Trap them has said before that the only piece of indispensable gear they use is the almighty HM-2 heavy metal pedal, and never is it more present than this incredible track off their second album, Darker Handcraft. The pedal is grinding along as if it were a separate member of the band. The crushing sound of the guitar, pissed off vocals, and probably the catchiest drum parts ever easily push this crusty melting-pot to the top of my most played on itunes. Erhm, i mean my record player! or uh... tape deck! dammit!

Second in my series on #Entombedcore, or hardcore bands that borrow influence heavily from Entombed and other early swedish death metal bands, is the ever ominous Harms Way! For this entry I welcome my brother and bandmate Ty "Scout" Acord to write a little on their Isolation EP.

- I think what first attracted me to Chicago, IL's hardcore outfit Harms Way was the way they seamlessly blended the intensity of crust elements, (such as d-beats and that almighty HM-2 tone) with a deadly hardcore presentation that seemed to come off heavier and meaner than any of their counterparts. Their Isolation EP is their 5th release and probably my favorite as it seems to be the most unique and relentless showcase of top notch songwritng, diversity, and overall aggression. Would definitely recommend checking out their earlier music if you dig this track because this is a band that has evolved in many ways, and has been successful at pulling off every style they've attempted. Here is the the title track from Isolation, my personal favorite from the EP.

Over the next week leading up to Halloween, I'll be posting about daily what is commonly known as ENTOMBED-CORE!!!!!1!

For those who are unfamiliar, there has been a wave in the past few years of young bands liberally taking influence from old-school Swedish death metal and using the almighty HM-2 Heavy Metal pedal. This pedal was an integral part of the famous "buzzsaw" tone employed by the early Swedish death metal bands like Entombed, Dismember, and Carnage.

We start this series with the band/album that started it all, Left Hand Path by Entombed!

Arguably the chief innovators in how modern (especially European) death metal came to sound, Entombed have been bringing the heavy since 1989. There could be no better way to scare your parents and chug whatever unholy liquid is around dressed like a slutty dead cheerleader than blasting Entombed while you're doing it. Happy Halloween! 1/5

Cee-lo has hit a commercial high in recent years but he's been a mainstay in the underground since the early 90's, pushing hip hop to new creative peaks. With his release of The Lady Killer in 2010 he all but abandoned his oddball, avant approach that he pursued with Gnarls Barkley in favor for a more accessible sound. It still sounds like Cee-lo, but Cee-lo for the radio. I am a die hard fan so I tend to love his new stuff as well, but Bodies stands out to me as the perfect marriage of weird Cee-lo and famous Cee-lo. Obviously taking notes from the OVO crew, Bodies is kinda terrifying but panty dropping nonetheless. So sexy it's scary.

The Menzingers may be my new favorite band after hearing their new album "Rented World." The hardest part about writing this post I kid you not is picking a favorite off the album. Their americana laced punk rock is so infectious it's hard not to have this whole album on repeat, even if it does make you want to kill yourself to "Needle in the Hay" a little more on every rotation. Also, the transition into the bridge on this song is a masterfully done demonstration of beautifully orchestrated simplicity. Js.

Capsule is techy, melodic, and gorgeous. Their undiscovered and unsung masterpiece No Ghost has been helping me keep my sanity over the last 4 months of nonstop touring. This is the opening track and is a great example of Capsule's artisanal brand of hardcore-ish-whatever this is. Do yourself a favor and get into it.

Tides of Man's easy to swallow brand of progressive rock has reached a creative peak on their latest instrumental full length, Young and Courageous. With the departure of longtime vocalist Tilian Pearson to buddy-band Dance Gavin Dance it seemed like they would be left high and dry, but ToM began writing instrumental tracks in Tilians absence. For me, Tilians voice was a bit distracting given its high powerful register so his loss is a welcome change, and Tides of Man is back in full force with the prettiest sounding music they've ever released.

Craft is SLEPT ON. These Swedish black metal-thrashers released what was my favorite album of theirs in 2002, TERROR PROPAGANDA. It has heaps and heaps of what I feel much black metal is missing, cojones. A literal heap of balls. This, the title track, is my favorite and perhaps darkest track on that album.

Young And In The Way are bringing metal and hardcore closer in a way that's long overdue.

While black metal and crust have a long standing partnership, hardcore has been mostly neglected by metal elitist pricks for various reasons of butt-hurt. YAITW are doing to hardcore what Skitsystem and Darkthrone did to crust in that they are combining the two in a stew of fat back beats, blasting kvlt ass chord progressions and moshable, high energy songwriting. Their newest album When Life Comes To Death just dropped on Deathwish last week, make sure you pick it up. This track is from the aforementioned album, and has a nasty old school BM feel to it.
