“the same way if anyone could teach me healing, it'd be you?” mei arches a brow at him, eyes lifting briefly from the mortar as she begins crushing the herbs into its bowl with the pestle. she's not sure why the enchanters want her to learn a healing spell so badly, but she is pretty sure that's never going to happen. she just can't figure out how, despite the many times anders has tried to explain it.

her magic is simply better suited to electrocuting things or frosting them over or turning them to stone. she can light any fire with a flick of her wrist—shouldn't that be impressive enough?

mei sighs, shaking her head a little. “i don't think so. it's like he's too afraid of his own power to take proper control of it.” and she can't wholly blame him for it, either. the circle tries very hard to instill a fear of magic in its mages, all while simultaneously expecting them to master what terrifies them. she's only resisted this long because she's too stubborn to see her magic as anything but a gift, like her brother always said it is.

“i'll keep trying. maybe i can get it through his head that he has to actually like his magic a little bit if he doesn't want to lose it.” having crushed the herbs into a paste, mei sets the pestle aside and takes the mortar into her hands, channeling quick bursts of heat into the mixture so it bubbles and pops, then pulling the heat right back out of it again.

she sets the mortar down and waves a hand over it, rubbing her fingertips together as though sprinkling something into the mix. a shimmer of ice shows in the bowl as she instills tiny crystals of frost throughout. then grabbing a bandage from the cabinet, she scoops a portion of the poultice onto it, pressing it between two sheets of cloth so the juices leak through.

“here...” mei sets the poultice in anders's hand and guides it up to the worst of the bruising on his face. the combination of herbs and cooling frost should help it hurt a bit less for a while. she doesn't ask why he hasn't bothered to heal his own wounds already. “fifteen minutes on, fifteen minutes off. should last a few hours.”

Anders shrugs and grins. “Well, we all know I'm the best teacher there is,” he says, voice dripping with sarcasm. He doesn't consider himself to be a good teacher whatsoever and he doesn't truly understand why Irving and the others want him to be Mei's teacher when Wynne is right there, eager to teach those who want to learn.

It has something to do with teaching him responsibility, according to Wynne. Something about him nurturing the magic of others leading him to embracing his role in the Circle. It's a ridiculous thought, of course. The only person Anders feels responsible for is himself.

Mei also just doesn't have the affinity for healing that Anders has always had. Working with spirits to mend what's broken comes almost naturally to him, as he pulls at the Fade and twists it around a wound or ailment. It's almost calming for him — far from the frustration it instills in others who don't come by it as easily.

“If you keep it up, I'm certain you'll be able to heal a paper cut within the next twelve years!" He says with a teasing grin.

But as the conversation shifts its focus back to Jowan, the smile fades from his face. His gaze remains fixed on the concoction in Mei's hands, watching as she works. Of course Jowan is afraid after all that's taught to him and other apprentices. So many of the young who are brought to their doors don't know the first thing about magic or the Fade until they're lectured about how easy it is for them to fall prey to demons and could become monsters. They don't know any relation to their magic except fear.

His nails bite into his palms as he thinks of it. “He just needs to find what he's good at,” he says in as flippant a voice as he can manage. “Once he really excels at something, he'll find more acceptance in what he is." That is, of course, if there's anything that comes naturally to him.

The enchanters have seemingly tried everything with the boy: healing, elemental magic, glyphs and wards, entropy — but nothing seems to stick. It's very possible that he won't find anything that comes easily to him, especially not when he seems to hate what he is.

He takes the poultice offered to him and holds it to his bruising, wincing slightly at the shock of the cold. After a moment, it feels nice, numbing the pain from its intense throbbing to a dull ache.

“Thank you,” he murmurs, feeling almost sheepish at having her take care of him. He smiles at his friend, warmth settling in his chest at the knowledge that not everyone in this Circle thinks of him as some kind of pest.

“of course i miss you. imagine being stuck with jowan all day!” mei steps back slightly, head canting to the side as she looks up at him. gently, she touches his chin with her fingertips, tilting his head to get a better look at all the bruising. she frowns, brow furrowing; she never hates the templars more than when she sees what they think is deserved just for wanting freedom.

mei takes anders by the hand. “c'mon. i'll make you some numbing poultices while i fill you in on what you've missed.” she may not be able to heal so much as a paper cut with magic, but her mother taught her well in the ten years before the templars discovered her, and she is an excellent herbalist.

so she leads him over to the cabinet full of ingredients they don't need to ask for, none of them dangerous enough to require permission. dropping his hand, mei begins picking through the various bottles to find the herbs she needs. elfroot. spindleweed. what she wouldn't give for some felandaris to really heal him up right. “irving has me trying to tutor jowan in elemental magic now. as if i don't have other things i'd rather be doing with my free time.”

not that there's that much to do in the tower other than study, but she does like to find a patch of distant sunlight in the library and read for pleasure whenever she can. theory, history, whatever she can find. she turns to set the bottles on a nearby table along with the community mortar and pestle.

“i don't even really like him that much, but i'm starting to worry about him. if jowan doesn't catch up to the rest of us soon...” she frowns again, eyes focused down as she adds the necessary herbs to the mortar, preparing to crush them all together into a paste. her voice drops low again, for anders's ears only: “nobody deserves what the templars do to apprentices who can't measure up.”

It takes a great deal of effort not to flinch away from Mei's wandering touch. He tilts his head for her examination, knowing that she just wants to see the extent of the injuries he's received. Of course, he hadn't been taken directly to the infirmary, as his wounds are far from life threatening and the Templars want him to be reminded of what happens when he runs. It makes him furious, but he also expects it by now. He's no longer a child with an innocence about the way of the world.

He could heal himself if he wanted to, but a part of him wants everyone else to see the proof of the Templars' cruelty. He wants a reminder that the Templars aren't the benevolent protectors they pretend to be.

He follows Mei, allowing her to lead him down the hall as he ignores the apprentices who stare at him and mutter as he passes. He's built up quite the reputation over the years and he's proud of it. He'd rather be a troublemaker than a nobody.

He takes a seat to allow his friend to fuss over him, watching her hands work. He thinks about her words, his eyes flicking to the side as though Jowan or Irving or Greagoir will appear out of thin air to listen in on their conversation. He sees no one but the other mages milling about and the Templars stationary at their stations.

Truth be told, he thinks Jowan might be a bit of a lost cause. The boy is weak and unskilled, falling behind in almost all of his studies. He's almost certainly doomed for Tranquility. The thought makes Anders' stomach twist and he feels sick. If he hadn't turned out to be such a skilled spirit healer, Anders would've almost certainly been doomed for Tranquility himself.

“If anyone could teach him, it'd be you,” he says instead of voicing his negative thoughts. “Is he making any improvements?” He doesn't know if it actually matters.

Eluvia's gaze slides from Mei's face as though repelled by some magnetic force. She can't look her companion in the eye, not after what she did. Of course, Eluvia still hasn't even told her the full truth of what she did to Connor, of the deal she made.

Connor is as good as dead — worse than dead — and it's all Eluvia's fault. She'd traded a boy's life for her own power, her own protection, and now everyone sees her as a maleficar.

They're right.

“I know that, ”she says quickly, a deep shame trapped inside of her heart. “But demons can be manipulated as well as any person. They're just reflections, like spirits."

But she hadn't manipulated the demon. She hadn't even tried. Instead, she'd allowed herself to be twisted and manipulated by a creature whose very nature was to prey on her desires and fears. But how could she admit that to Mei? How could she ever speak the words aloud and admit to what she'd done out of her own selfish fear of the Templars?

The demon had promised her power, but not just any power: The power to protect herself, to protect the ones she cares about. It had promised that with the power it offered, she'd never again be trapped in the Circle, that she wouldn't be dragged back once all of this was over.

“Blood magic is just a tool,” she says, but she still can't meet Mei's gaze. “I'm not an idiot. I know what I'm doing." But that couldn't be further from the truth.

Kay grinned and shook out his long hair, ignoring the blood that was quickly drying and creating knots in the curls. "That was a chimera," he said flippantly. "Wasn't she beautiful?"

It wasn't everyday that a chimera ventured so close to the city. Kay had slain his fair share of monsters in his time as a knight, but this was only his second time killing a chimera. All three of its heads would serve as valuable trophies once he returned to the castle.

His eyes turned back to the woman and he smiled. "There's nothing to fear. She's quite dead now." He kicked the body at his feet to prove it. "I would never allow any harm to come to you, m'lady." He swept into a bow and took the woman's hand, pressing a kiss to the back of it.

Slaying a beast and meeting a pretty woman? It must have been Kay's lucky day.

Scorpius snorted and it quickly devolved into a series of unrestrained giggles that were far from the quiet their sister requested. They quickly slapped a hand over their mouth to muffle the noise, but it did little to hide the grin in their eyes.

They'd spent the night out at the Hanged Man with their friends and Aia, playing round after round of Wicked Grace and losing most of their coin to Varric and Isabela. What little coin they managed not to lose was spent on drinks for the table and they'd consumed their fair share.

Probably more than their fair share.

"Right. We don't want Mother to hear," they said once their laughter had died down. They pressed a finger to their lips in a shh motion. "Or, Maker forbid, Carver." They made a face at the thought of being scolded by their younger brother.

Anders laughs like it doesn't hurt to do so. As though he hadn't been dragged back to the Tower in chains that rubbed his wrists raw, like his jaw isn't bruised and swollen from the Templars trying to teach him a lesson he's been taught a thousand times before.

“Come on, you have to admit that you miss me when I'm gone,” he teases, face bright and tone playful. “Who else can even compare to my good looks? Jowan?" He snorts at the idea.

He stiffens slightly at the hug — memories of gauntleted hands on his bare skin almost sending him spiraling — but then he relaxes, his arms going around Mei's body to pull her close. He can't get enough of a non-violent touch, his body almost aching for want of it.

At her words, his expression falters for just a moment before he plasters a smile back on his face. “Eh, someone's got to keep things interesting around here,” he says like he isn't bothered, like a part of his heart isn't broken each time he's dragged back to the Circle no matter how many times it happens.

He pulls away from the embrace to grin down at the younger mage. “So, what did I miss while I was gone?”
