i bought an MF DOOM shirt and it's sparked an internal moral dilemma that has lasted for weeks

first of all, i do genuinely love the shirt. it's a great design and it's the only one i could find that captures the kind of eclectic maximalism i would want out of a DOOM shirt.

the problem? it has the face from the Black Bastards cover on it (which for those unaware looks like this)

i somehow didn't notice it until well after the shirt arrived at my house. it's a reasonable thing to include on a DOOM shirt, given that KMD was what launched his career and the face was often used as an icon for the group. it also works well as a way of representing some of the racial themes that come up thruout his work. but i've been going back and forth on whether or not i feel okay wearing the image as a white person (for what i hope are obvious reasons)

at first i had thought about covering it up with a sharpie or something, but i started to second guess myself. like on the one hand, it's a disturbing image that i don't really feel comfortable wearing, but on the other hand, it's an image that was used by the group for a reason, and it feels wrong to smother Black art just because it's uncomfortable to look at.

i looked into the design itself, which was a poster made for a tribute event hosted by a Black person and presumably made by or at least approved by Black people. i think it's safe to assume the designers understood the message of the work that they were creating art for, and as mentioned previously i think the image makes sense in context.

i think it comes down to whether or not i'm making a statement by wearing the shirt or if i'm just sharing someone else's statement. i've worn it in public a few times to gauge reactions and i don't think anyone seems to care about it (granted i'm neurodivergent so it's hard to say for sure)

What is your favorite movie/tv show/video game? (You can pick one for each or whichever one is easiest to answer)

movie: it changes all the time but some of my favorites are perfect blue, raw (2016), donnie darko, persona (1966), jennifer’s body, and blade runner

tv show: arcane. also a fan of NGE and cowboy bebop

video game: i haven’t really played much outside of LIS. i don’t own a console and i made a steam account specifically to play LIS because a friend reccomended it. i used to have genshin on my phone but i got busy with other things and it just became too overwhelming to stay caught up so i bailed (i still keep up with the yuri ships tho)
