what is the etymology behind illyria?? in this cr the name comes from a very loosely defined region in the balkans which was identified by the ancient greeks and then the romans (which may suggest that illyria, the country, was at one point part of the roman empire?? only the very southern parts of the country was part of the roman empire in this cr so it's probably doable. the bosporan kingdom, which housed phanagoria where naviana would be, was a vassal state to the roman empire. are the bosporans related to the illyrians?? were they their predecessors??)
i still see the term illyria being used today among people from the balkans so i'm curious ^^ would it still retain the same etymology as this dr (and somehow be moved all the way east to crimea) or would the name be a result of an unrelated contact between the greeks/romans and the illyrians??

as for my original intention with the name, it wasn’t intended to be related to the cr understanding of illyria — the name was just very beautiful to me and followed the linguistic idea that two “l”s in names are seen as lucky in a way (which i think i mentioned in one of my posts). i don’t think i’ve thought much further into the actual origin/etymology though hehe
it’s a super interesting idea though, to have illyria be part of the roman empire, and would explain some of the culture its adopted that is adjacent to greek/turkic/etc. culture (though my current explanation is just mere geographical proximity). my intention with illyria was to make it super slavic-influenced in nature, since i’m slavic in cr and it’s a culture that is super important to me, hence i made illyria be part of the soviet union, as well as geographically close to russia/kazakhstan/ukraine/all the places i have ties to. another reason for the soviet union thing was to sort of kickstart/foster the political system in the country, since the ussr sort of attempted a socialist system, which is how illyria has operated for years since the official monarchy ended. as for ethnic groups, i’ve always imagined illyrians to be of a mix of central asian and slavic descent, but again, haven’t thought all that deeply into it :P
it’s also worth mentioning that i haven’t really kept all that true to cr geography/history/wtv when conceiving of illyria, especially considering that i basically changed the geographical climate to be more hot in naviana and the surrounding areas (which is a core identifying characteristic of the region) & colder/more true to cr in more northern regions or as you move farther from near naviana. so overall, a lot of my logic in the country’s history or facts surrounding it isn’t easily deducible 😭
so basically, all in all, i initially designed illyria to be adjacent to a lot of slavic countries. its strayed a bit farther since my initial concept, and has gained more influence from greece, turkic countries, arab countries, maybe some desi culture, yada yada. any relation to the cr understanding of illyria is unintentional, and with my current plans surrounding the country, i’d probably most likely just script a different name for cr illyria and have it be mostly historically unrelated — BUT this is subject to change (conservatively) since my history is far from being fully fleshed out and this is certainly a cool idea <3
