In the afternoon, Zuko asked Sokka if he would join him in visiting some schools. Sokka, who truly had nothing better to do, jumped at the opportunity. He thought Zuko could use some help anyways. The Fire Lord seemed to scare everyone, Sokka didn't want to imagine how kids felt about him. He couldn't have been more wrong. As soon as they entered the school yard, the children rushed towards Zuko, pulling at his robes and asking him to come play. He greeted each of them with a smile and a pat on the head. “Of course, I'll play. But let me introduce you all to Ambassador Sokka.” The children all waved to Sokka who crouched down and introduced himself. “Mr. Ambassador Sokka do you know how to play Kuai Ball?” Sokka grinned. “Oh boy, do I! And,” Sokka dropped his voice to a whisper, “I think I could even beat His Majesty.” Zuko came up behind him. “I am an all time Kuai Ball champion. I'd like to see you try.” Sokka felt the competitiveness erase any sense of affection he had for the other man. “It's on!” They split up into teams, each of them crowned the captain through the highly democratic process of playground rules. Sokka was serious about his game plan and so were the kids on his team. “We will bring glory to this side of the net!” “Yeah!” the children all screamed. Zuko's approach was much different. He hoped everyone would have fun. “Remember, it's just a game. So the most important thing is that we all have fun.” “Yes Mr. Fire Lord!” They approached the net and Zuko let Sokka start with the ball. He served and the game was on.

Zuko kept up without issue, but the feeling of Sokka holding his hand so firmly was distracting. “Where are we going, Sokka?” Sokka grinned, “You'll see.”

Sokka climbed into the bath, eyes half closed. He settled in letting out a deep breath. Zuko appreciated the way the water lapped over Sokka's tanned skin. He appreciated the way his muscles flexed. And he realized, with a shock, that most of all he appreciated being alone with him. Sokka sighed again and dipped his head under the water. Zuko smirked. It wasn't until Sokka came back out that he noticed the Fire Lord with a jolt. “ZUKO!” Sokka half scrambled out of the tub, half covered his chest. “WHEN DID YOU GET HERE?!” Zuko laughed. It was a full-bodied, loud, unrestrained laugh. His sides ached from it and tears came to his eyes. “Sokka,” he wheezed out, “I've been here the whole time.” Sokka blanched. “Excuse me?” Zuko couldn't stop laughing. “I was here- before- you.” Sokka face palmed himself so hard that it left a slight red mark. “This is majorly embarassing.” Zuko shook his head, biting his lip to try and stifle his laughter. “It was endearing.” Sokka had never been described as endearing before. He liked it. And recovering from his initial embarassment he couldn't help joining in on Zuko's contagious laughter.

Sokka would look good on the throne. “I'm happy to have the Ambassador's approval.” “I do have some notes. You ever think that half of these ‘pro-ceed-ings' could have been a letter? Also, maybe brighten the place up a little? A couple flowers never hurt anyone.” “Should we crown you the Minister of Interior Design?” Sokka grinned. “Absolutely! We could even have… and hear me out… a water slide! I think it would really bring the place together you know.”

They were both on the ground now, wrestling. Hands grabbing at each other, arms trying to hold the other down. Zuko was on top of Sokka, pinning down his arms. The moonlight cast him in sharp angles, his sweat sheened, his eyes glowed bright amber. Sokka twisted out of his grip, throwing his entire body weight into pushing Zuko down. Sokka was on top of Zuko, arms twisted in to uselessness, legs securely pinned. He was panting. The pendants on his chest shone in the moonlight, wavering above Zuko, hitting Sokka's bare chest. Zuko could feel Sokka's muscles straining, the way they trembled just slightly. His blue eyes were dark as storms. Zuko felt his heart rate rise. They were staring at each other now and something twisted in both of them. Sokka's grip unconsciously tightened and Zuko forced himself to look away. He went limp and ceded. It took a moment for Sokka to realize what had happened, he was still lost in the way Zuko looked splayed out below him. He let go.

Zuko felt all the tension rush out of him and he melted into Sokka's side. "Fuck the Chamberlain." Zuko laughed. "You wouldn't dare." Sokka chuckled. "Jealous?" Zuko pulled him closer. "Yes."
