Honored to share a powerful piece of protest art. Thanks @hugeinc for reaching out. My thoughts are below and the full piece is online at magenta.as -- I see pain and promise in this image. The struggle is larger than life in the background. It is timeless (unfortunately) and it is tangible. Images from this day were posted to social media in real time. One of the shots captured on this day became the cover image of the April 25, 2015, issue of Time magazine. In the foreground, you see the photographer, Devin Allen. The juxtaposition of his emotion with those behind him give context to the struggle. We are fighting simply to be. My choice to include a photo rather a design might seem strange. Here’s where I’m coming from: While Emory Douglas, Shepard Fairey, and JR have produced work that connects with people on a large scale, I wanted to highlight the moments that inspire the artwork that follows.
Beg For Mercy by G Unit dropped 13 years ago today. Yayo was "unavailable" for the photo shoot, so we incorporated a pic of him from the Get Rich or Die Tryin' album package onto the wall. #slangincarchives
Wrath of the Math, by @jeru_thedamaja was released 20 years ago today. It's the second album package I designed and I remember everything about it; the shoot, designing it at @dannyhastings crib, and how much it paid. The check was small, but this is when I knew I could make a living doing what I love.

This is the first magazine cover Jay-Z appeared on. It's also the first magazine cover I designed. #reasonabledoubt #20thanniversary #slangincarchives

Nastradamus was released on Nov. 23, 1999. I tried to get this version of the cover pushed through, but in the end, @nas chose to stick with theme established by Amy McCauley on Illmatic. That album was a classic on every level so no complaints here. Pardon the quality, it's a scan from the portfolio circa 2000. Photo by @kwakualston
Last night I told the story of how this image came to be. I was art directing the @50cent "Power of The Dollar" shoot by @jonathanmannion in NYC. Mannion laid on his back to get shots from an ill angle. Minutes later, a cop car comes flying up the alley. I told him to keep shooting, knowing this would be the perfect image for the single. At the last second 50 moved out of the way expecting the cops to pass by. They hopped out on us. Apparently someone saw Mannion on the ground surrounded by me, 50, and @tonyyayo and called 911. Mannion got the shot and smoothed out the situation. It was a win, win. #1999 #archives
Last night we had the big pleasure & privilege to have Creative Director Julian Alexander [Grammy Award winning Art Director | founder of SLANG INC., one of New York City’s leading full service design firms and ECD of GUILD] at my SVA NYC course: Photographic Identity: Artistic Self-Expression and Professional Application.
Julian gave us an intimate inside look into his professional experience from the angle of an art and creative director in the context of design concepts among them music projects for e.g. 50 Cent, Eminem.
His authentic persona and straight forward take on the creative and specifically on the photographic process created an intimate atmosphere that at the same time was very exciting and inspiring.
Many thanks to Julian for the good time and his generosity!
