william went through a period of time in his early / mid twenties where he tried to fix everything about his appearance that he felt was ‘wrong’ for the image he presented. he got his teeth whitened and fixed, he picked up smoking, he cut his hair short, he smoothed out his northern accent into something that sounded a little higher - class. he started wearing contacts, too, instead of glasses, before he realized that glasses held their value in business meetings and other places he had to appear intelligent and well - educated. when it comes to fitting in, he’s a bit obsessive with ensuring he &. his family keep up with trends and fashions. especially after evan’s death: he is constantly projecting the vibe of nothing is going on in this house, there is nothing to suspect, we fit in, we are normal.

He’s hunched over in his workshop, a rare request for Michael’s presence turning this into an uncomfortable father - son bonding activity. Redesigning animatronics isn’t exactly a conventional activity, but considering neither of them are particularly conventional people ( despite William’s best efforts to appear so ), they persist.

On his papers are five animatronics, chirpy and cheerful if you ignore some of the odd - looking design mechanisms ( a scooper, a scalpel, hands strong enough to strangle ). Three of them are the usual characters. Two are different. A girl with red hair. A ballerina.

He trusts Michael enough for this. He isn’t blind to his son’s talents: William is far from an artist, but years of his work has taught him the basics. But it’s Michael’s opinion he needs now; Michael’s tweaks in the redesigns, to really satisfy his gnawing perfectionist streak. William eyes the drawings again — preliminary designs, he reminds himself, they can change — before wheeling his chair out of the way, allowing Michael to look closer.

“ The Funtime animatronics. ” There’s no pride or sense of accomplishment in his voice yet: ideas are nothing until he can create them in real life. Tapping his pen against his mug of coffee, impatiently awaiting Michael’s reaction, William keeps his silence for all of five seconds before pressing: “ So ? Give me your opinion. More than anything, these need to be perfect, you understand ? Let me hear your thoughts. ”
