Headcanon that Dr Death Defying has that name bc he survived loosing his legs during a WAR in a DESERT. Like he was in a critical condition in the toughest place to recover you could imagine and he still kept on living. Survived a mission the fabulous killjoys didn't. And also his voice and hope, "Killjoys, make some noise!", lived on after his death, so there's that too. He defied death over and over again.

hc that there’s a few types of edible flowers in the desert and when the venom sibs were just learning the desert they saw ghoul and jet pick the flowers off a cactus and eat them, and jet was about to offer a piece to kobra but when he looked up the venom sibs were just. frozen in horror. completely ghost-pale.

ghoul and jet laughed so hard they cried and had to explain to the sibs that no, not everything in the desert was poisonous and out to kill them, contrary to the BLI propaganda that they constantly heard in the city

New Years Eve is important in the Zones, much in the way birthdays are. The date it’s celebrated on differs from the date the actual new year is celebrated in Battery City, being instead an event marking the establishment of the runaways and rebels in the Zones. It was started by the first zone DJs- Dr. Death in the east and Hot Chimp in the north-west- and used to be a special broadcast where ‘joys could phone in to request songs for lost loved ones or share stories and tips they’d learnt.

During later years, New Years became a celebration of defiance- a testimony that despite BLi’s constant efforts they’re still there. That they survived. Killjoys often go out to bars or choose to spend time with their crew on this occasion, tradition being that no ‘joy is to be on their way somewhere or else they’ll be driving or walking there for the rest of the ear before they reach their destination. The first day of the year has all sorts of customs associated with it that differ from crew to crew and range from simply recovering from the previous night to leaving letters at the mailbox, dropping off surplus items at Gravel Gertie’s or for free at the market, adding patches to jackets and so on.

i really like the idea of friendship bracelets being, like, a Thing in the zones. wearing one for each of your friends/family/partner(s)/crew, done of course in their colors, being a common practice. a sort of way to keep them close to you and by your side at all times. bracelets for the dead worn on the left arm, and those representing the living on the right. since superstitions run amok out in the desert, when a bracelet breaks or falls off, its seen as an ill omen for the ‘joy it represents.

something i’ve always found interesting is the idea of entities and deities and creatures whose names you should avoid saying at all costs, to avoid summoning or angering them or bothering them in some way.

i like to think that destroya is thought of as the opposite. the vibrations from every utterance of his name shake the earth a bit, give him a little nudge. his name finds its way into the filler phrases of bots– anything helps. in the corners of the lobby, you’ll find droids who are either truly devoted or truly desperate, muttering destroya, destroya, destroya with every free moment they have.
