Sitting at the tavern after an adventure, your cleric clears his throat. “Alright, so I’ve made a list. It’s real expensive to keep healing you all, so I’ve started a tab. I’m broke right now, so if you want to live, I’m collecting that debt.”

Everyone at the table stares at him in disbelief.

"You realize healing is your job? Like you get paid out of the shared loot. You got a sixth of the treasure chest at the end of the cave, along with everything else." The huntress points at the loot bag. It's not an insignificant size.

"You don't understand. Do you know how expensive it is to buy holy water and sage and proper sterilization and"

"Shut the fuck up." Growls the wizard. "I have student loans, and Josie has a wife and kids, and Greg has that weird truth quest going on. You have to learn how to save money, or argue for a better share like a normal adventurer."

"Do you know how often you guys get injured?"

"Do you know how often my weapon gets damaged? How much poison costs on the market? How much armor repairs cost for all of us? You're not at church anymore, I've seen you spending money on things you don't need."

God, it's so disorienting seeing all the jugglinglab stuff going around when I'm a juggler who knows what the software is actually used for. And it's useful!

A lot of this is baseless speculation but I think if there's an opportunity to turn the singers against the Fused/Odium then the complete failure of the Siege of Azimir could be a key point of discontent.

The singers were "winning" that battle up until the very end but at the cost of losing about four soldiers for every one of Azir's (I believe this ratio comes straight from Adolin's inner thoughts). It was a brutal, bloody siege that took a huge amount of lives to be thrown away for every inch of ground gained.

Imagine: You're an awakened singer on that final night, fighting for something righteous. You survived the arrows, the shardbearers, the fire, fucking Taln turning into the doomslayer because the Fused were about to commit a war crime. The final push is here, and now half your remaining buddies die to throwing themselves at Azish spearmen along the shield wall. But then the line finally crumbles. And you live. You help take the city. The sun is rising on the tenth day.

And then fucking Abidi the Monarch fumbles at the last second because he decided to be a cocky prick and show off. He shouldn't have even been at the battle because of his cracked gemheart but he insisted on being a liability so he could get petty revenge on some fuckass human. That same human, with one leg, beats his ass with a candelabra and then holds the claim to the city on some technicality. Abidi is thousands of years old and expects you to treat him like a god btw.

I would become the joker.

I think what also adds to this is that the Azish singers are pointed out to be not especially warlike. There's that moment where one of the leaders mentions that the Azish singers filed a formal complaint before being forced to leave. They're drafted into the war and forced to fight.

On further reflection, I'm not so sure it is Azish singers, considering they came from the oathgate, which can connect anywhere.

I think something that will be interesting in the future is the different culture clash between different groups of singers. Different countries clearly have different cultures, and I'm sure it will diverge more as the 10 years pass before the next book.
