One major factor that makes the nature of psychiatric treatment intrinsically violent is the fact that the boundaries of the patient is considered an obstacle to treatment. The lack of consent of the patient is considered an obstacle to treatment. These obstacles are abhorred by psychiatry and are considered things that must be broken down. If the patient has a disagreement with the treatment, or objects to it, this is considered a symptom and therefore is seen as something not to be validated or respected. Thoughts, behaviors, beliefs; these are all considered symptoms if they are in opposition to treatment and must be broken down. However, compliance with treatment is almost never seen as disordered or symptomatic, even if the patient is fawning or similarly complying to avoid more harm done to them. The fact that only extreme compliance is accepted by psychiatry is inherently violent and conditions people to accept abuse. Isolation and violence are not vectors of healing.
Gets stuck in the past and makes a random village get way smarter and less violent in a generational sense because I keep smacking people over the head with a stick and telling them that it’s the devil’s metal whenever they try to use lead for something in my presence and there develops a very niche regionalized superstition that an angry warlock will jump out of a tree and beat the shit out of you if you touch lead with your bare hands
Gets excommunicated by the Catholic Church for telling people that they can banish the devil from their water if they boil it therefore saving hundreds of people from a cholera outbreak but I don’t care and keep trying to convince the locals to use soap more often
Meets another iseksied person in the far past and beats the shit out of them for participating in the slave trade and eating moldy bread
Gets seen as crazy when I say I’m distilling peppermint oil to banish the miasma but people start asking to have some real quick when the Black Death comes to town and I am unaffected due to my constantly minty fresh house repelling rodents and fleas alike
You’re not at all worried about being labeled a witch and burned at the stake?
Witch burnings were very specifically a mid 1500s to mid 1600s phenomenon and I went back further than that so I’m fine as long as I don’t try to convince people that the earth revolves around the sun.
You’ve thought this out thoroughly and I appreciate that
one thing I can always respect about Roman's blog is that they put effort into his shit posts. Enough that they probably count as actual posts rather than shit posts.

I always get Naomi Wolf and Naomi Klein confused and I end up muttering that one tweet that's like "If the Naomi be Klein you're doing just fine / If the Naomi be Wolf, woof" or whatever and it does help, unfortunately
YES THIS ONE
I've been trying to think of a way to lay this out for a while bc it is the #1 most common concern that I see expressed by people who are uncertain about antipsychiatry, like, by far, and it requires a sort of perspective reframe that can be hard for me to put words to. I've had like three ppl express some of these concerns in the last couple days alone, some of them good friends (hi Alex!) and I wanted to just make a public post about it, bc I think it trips a lot of people up.
People will ask me: how can I be antipsychiatry when I rely on the psychiatric system to obtain care? How can I oppose something on which I rely to stay alive? Which I think is really understandable, given the somewhat misleading name of the movement (and there's several names for it already, none of which really are illuminating to people outside those circles, which I think is a big communication problem. But I digress.)
When I say I am advocating for the abolition of psychiatry, I'm not saying I want to abolish access to care. What I am saying is that I want to abolish the institution of psychiatry as the gatekeeper of that care. Currently that's the only way you can access the care you need, and that's a huge part of the problem! It's like... of course it would be incoherent to say "you can't be anticapitalist if you rely on corporations to survive," because of course the system is designed so that we must rely on it.
So what I am advocating for is the replacement of psychiatry as the sole avenue of care with other models, models which prioritize autonomy and remove hierarchy and coercive control. Peer respite in place of involuntary institutionalization, informed consent models of acquiring medications rather than forcing people to go through medical gatekeepers who hold enormous power over them and largely do not see them as real people, etc. There are many, many forms that proposed alternative ways to access care can take.
I get it! I also take meds. I also have to rely on the systems that hurt me. For me, being antipsych is about saying "it is fucked up that we are forced to rely on these harmful, hierarchical systems to access care. We deserve something humane. We deserve to be the ones in control of our own treatment. We deserve to have our autonomy valued and protected and prioritized." Psychiatry does not offer us these things, and its structure at the core ultimately prevents it from doing so, due to its hierarchical nature & inherent power imbalances. This is broadly applicable to many of our current systems, and saying so is not the same as making an argument that we should simply not have any systems at all.
this is a pretty good explanation of what the movement is (and finally someone acknowledged that the term is very misleading)
the thing is that, the institution is also responsible for certifying the therapists and compiling the knowledge and monitoring medication research and all that... and the hierarchical component is embedded into this because it's also baked into research and scientific/medical academia... it would require a profound reform to change the way medical academia and the whole healthcare establishment works
yup! and the rest of academia too!

I am so excited for 9/5 bc not only could I become a licensed social worker but I will be at a baseball game & will eat 9 hot dogs with one hand & watch a second baseball game (WPBL) in the other. I cannot imagine a more relaxing evening. Well except for the hot dogs that’s a lot of hot dogs & I anticipate suffering for them. But that’s ok.
