Fool's Fate, Chapter 13 and 14
Happy Pride to page burners, the My Dream Was Dead In My Arms quoters, genderfluid beadmakers, king's fools, warriors who find "strange kinship" with big burly gay men, fashion forward Jamaillians, dudes whose babies look like their best friend, blue and silver earring wearers, The Witted, royal bastards of all sorts, The Ones Born To Fulfill the Prophecy, tall pale freaks who live to touch wood, fools and idiots, men named Tom who rock heavy w their chickens, the wolfpilled, color-changing tricksters with sick back pieces, axe-wielding poets, Very Fetching Women, and golden men who hold wolves on a chain connected to their heart. This one's for you guys 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
one of my fave fitz crazy description things is where he uses like, light, and occasionally the gazes of other (often imagined) people to create this sort of proxy imagined caress of beloved. the light is tracing over his face, but in the described movement what is conveyed is a sensual effect of Him tracing over beloved's features.
fitz will be like wow the fool never tells me anything and the fool will be like i was literally sharing information with you earlier ? and fitz will be like yeah i didn’t understand that because i turn my brain off when you start talking to me. all the court must wonder at the suppleness of your waist btw
The actual fucking PROBLEM like the SICKEST PART of every single way Beloved acts and thinks and talks about Fitz from Ship of Magic through the quarrel is that they're doing that because they KNOW Fitz loves them. Because they LOOKED INTO HIS SOUL and SAW and FELT that he loved them the way they loved him. They spent all of AQ flirting with him (bc he was their FIRST CRUSH and CHILDHOOD LOVE btw) and assumed that Fitz was humoring them or pitied them when he claimed to care for them and then SAW WITH THEIR FUCKING EYES that their ROMANTIC AND SEXUAL LOVE for him was RETURNED. And then they KISSED HIM GOODBYE. So when Amber is blushing about her one true love giving her the earring and carving Fitz's face into Paragon and when the Fool is clinging to Fitz "like a woman" and playing domestic in his house for way longer than he intended to and Lord Golden is proudly pinning the flowers he thinks Fitz is making a point of giving him to his FUCKING chest EVERY day and when up to the very first sentences of Fitz picking a fight with him he's asserting that they both know what they are and they both know what they feel for each other and is literally operating on the assumption that those are the exact same thing it is because THEY HAVE SEEN THEIR LOVE FOR FITZ MIRRORED BACK AT THEM IN EQUAL MEASURE THROUGH HIS FUCKING HEART AND SOUL. And they KNOW that it is there. And EVERYTHING THEY HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT HIM for OVER FIFTEEN of SA'S OWN YEARS has been colored by the knowledge that Fitz reciprocates their feelings. AND THEN FITZ INSISTS HE DOESN'T AND THAT THEY'RE IN THE WRONG FOR THINKING HE DOES. OKAY. OKAY
cottagecore fitzloved when they had like, two weeks of peace THAT ONE SINGULAR TIME in their lives
a really messy quick sketch of my Fitz and Fool in Kelsingra Fix-It Fanon Ideas i wanna share with this post so ya`ll know what i`m all about when i`ll be posting all my Kelsingra setting fanarts!!!
post RotE where Fitz does not get mortally infected and they both live happily ever after in Kelsingra
they become Elderlings themselves, Icefyre being Fitz` dragon counterpart because they are both two heavily depressed, pathetic disasters with trauma
somehow dragon magic can heal Fitz from the silver, thus the scars where he used to be silvered
Fitz also as before looks younger than his years, and the dragon magic adds to that
I have this idea that Fool-as-Amber travels for a few more years with the Bingtown traders before returning to Kelsingra, and Fitz has a few years to ponder and sort out his feelings about the Fool
maybe he finally makes actual friends? maybe he sees homophobia die in Kelsingra and slowly starts to heal from his own internalized homophobia?
then at some point he makes up his mind, once Fool returns, he SHALL pursue a romantic relationship with the Fool, one he has been longing for all his life but surpressed
Fool comes back in say, 5 years? but they have Elderling prolonged lifespans so that feels like no time at all
Fool brings Fitz a million tiny trinket presents, and apricot wine
they hang out a lot, healing their relationship slowly, living together, gardening, cooking, doing domestic stuff together, living life peacefully and slowly
Fitz brings Fool flowers daily because he regrets his behaviour of the past
they slow burn romance each other
Kelsingra citizens rejoce for Lady Amber is finally united with her long beloved trash husband who does not even deserve it
most beautiful couple in Kelsingra hello???
thats it thats all i have for yall today its not rocket science alsdkfjlsdfj but i feel so very alive being on here again and talking about a fandom i love, yall have no idea how much it means to me 🥺🥺🥺🥺
hope yall like this!!! stay tuned for more fanart of them !!!!
the things we forge away
it will always be a banger when fitz simply chooses not to tell you how he feels about something gay. oh the fool kissed him? surprising! anyway. oh does he want the fool to keep the earring he gave him for his wife? yeah he did. anyway. oh the fool just said ily for a joke and fitz froze. why was that an effective bit? why did fitz do that? Idk. let's all stay up recognising and rejecting a truth we do not wish to understand tonight.
I do think it's fascinating how he is cagey about the fool even from the start. like maybe I just wasn't as hyperaware of their dynamic then but you almost don't realise they are becoming close friends until they are in farseer and it makes you like? why weren't you telling me about the fact you guys like. clearly kind of hang out. and you think he's really funny and are very fond of him. until you're telling chade. it's just always and forever a relationship fitz will not be telling you quite as much about. and it's so interesting.
Kettricken is not stupid. If Beloved is so stricken each time Dutiful is in view because of how much he looks like Fitz, I imagine she came to her own conclusions eventually. I imagine in some proportion she knows what happened, even if perhaps she denies it. I wonder how devastated she must have been. I wonder if she was excited for her child so that she may see Verity’s face again, only to see Fitz in the features of her son. I wonder if she felt violated in the same way Fitz did. The same way she felt the same heartbreak as Fitz for Nighteyes. Fitz and Kettrickens relationship is so very dear to me, they struggle in things so similar that truly only they could understand one another in them. I wish they had more moments to blossom their friendship together.

i'm not skeptical of how much Fitz loves Molly because of my Fitzloved brain (I got sick of their relationship midway through Royal Assassin and shipped him with no one except a therapist before I even knew that Fitzloved or FitzKett were a thing) or because i don't respect or love Molly as character.
i'm skeptical of how much Fitz loves Molly because most of his thoughts of her after 20 years of marriage are either vague sex reminisces or what she brings to him materially, and more importantly after PROMISING "NO MORE SECRETS" IN FRONT OF MOLLY AND HER CHILDREN he proceeds to hide the two other most important relationships in his life and the circumstances surrounding them from her for their entirety of their marriage. He never respects or trusts her enough to have that conversation, and I genuinely think that is outrageously shitty and manipulative. Not to mention literally viewing her children as game pieces with which he can win her affection at the end of Tawny Man. Using the memory of their father as lever to capture those pieces. After frankly telling Kettricken that Burrich is "out of the way" now.
Like, I feel crazy. Fitz comes across to me as so deeply manipulative, dishonest and shallow in regards to the way he thinks and acts towards Molly and their relationship from RA onward. He spends the entirety of Tawny Man reducing her to a mental image of "a woman who can bear [his] children and make [him] a home." and thinking because they hooked up at 15 that he could've swooped into her life at any time and ended her marriage to a man who actually loved and respected her and told her the fucking truth. And he's never disabused of this notion! Everyone tells him he's right! Despite how incredibly juvenile that is!
Armed intruders come into their home that she does the majority of work to maintain and he lies to her and swears the staff she hired to secrecy rather than have a single honest moment with her.
Molly is such an interesting character when she isn't filtered through Fitz' misogynistic, horny, self-interested and intensely gendered POV. It frustrates me that we're told they have this great love story, but we miss the majority of their courtship and marriage, and Fitz' thoughts on Molly are overwhelmingly Vague Sex Memories that show little of her personality or their relationship dynamic. It's just him remembering the curve of her body by the firelight or whatever. One paragraph of Bee's POV on Molly is more interesting than an entire book of Fitz' POV on Molly.
We see Molly and Burrich survive and struggle through hardship together, and discuss the boundaries of their relationship. We see Fitz survive and struggle through hardship together with the Fool, Starling, Kettricken even Jinna and discuss the boundaries of each of those relationships (minus Kettricken because Verity Trauma).
We do not see Fitz and Molly have these frank, vulnerable and tender discussions - from Royal Assassin onward their relationship is in a holding pattern of "Molly is upset at Fitz and makes demands for responsibility and assurances -> Fitz lies and makes promises he will not follow through on -> they fuck." and that doesnt really change after they reconnect and then marry. Their relationship is simply free from the strain that Fitz' dishonesty and lack of interest in actually building and running their life together would put on the relationship if all of their material needs and more weren't provided for by the state.
And the one hardship they should struggle through together? Molly feels fundamentally abandoned for. Fitz, who has seen and worked miracles makes Molly feel deeply alone, hurt and misunderstood for her entire miraculous pregnancy. All whilst hiding the fact that he's done and witnessed far more impossible things from her. She even knows that he's writing secret memoirs in his study! And he refuses that bid for connection! The only reason his dishonesty and evasiveness is not a Bigger Deal is that Molly dies before she finds out.
I'm fine with the complication and tragedy introduced by Fitz' relationship to Molly (even if I kinda feel pretty gross at seeing another queer relationship presented as "well I love you, but I can't give you a Normal Life so I'll selflessly and sexlessly pine for you from afar because that's seemingly the only ""pure"" way for us to love each other." Like I'm a little sick of us Being Jon Connington iykwim) but I simply have never understood their relationship- Fitz' thoughts and actions towards Molly aren't consistent to me with the thoughts of someone who actually loves a person and not just what they represent, and I don't really understand what Molly sees in Fitz (deadbeat serial liar who profoundly fucked up her life, contributes little to her household and continues to hide shit from her) from her perspective.
Editing the circumstances of your life to curate your partner's vision of you isn't passive and/or harmless, it is Actively Manipulative.
Molly's marriage to Burrich just made so much more sense and had actual palpable chemistry and it's treated like an afterthought or placeholder. We don't even see a complex and honest discussion between Fitz and Molly about Burrich. He's teleported to Aslevjal to give his blessing and die and we spend the last trilogy conveniently bringing up their marriage as little as possible, simply to not put Fitz' own shitty behaviour into stark contrast. Idk.
fitz is so deeply a cowed and coerced wolf among prey -- among bucks. the animal symbolism so perfectly conveys the farseers' fear of his potential and desire to control him -- shrewd, through cunning, attempts to befriend the wolf like in a fairytale; verity draws his power and makes it his own; regal attempts to constrain and destroy him. fitz, the wolf in buck's clothing, can pose nothing but danger for the farseer line as long as he remains unchecked, simply because of who and what he is. catalyst, changer, wolf. and wolves have no kings. robin hobb your brilliant animal symbolism --!
Some people say the way women in ROTE always seem to end up as mothers is misogynist, and I don't wholly disagree. However, I think that is really reductive.
The idea that having children will complete a woman is a sexist one, if you only apply that to women. But in ROTE, we see that the men, especially Fitz, are as preoccupied with children as the women.
I see parallels in Patience and Verity, for example. They desperately want to conceive a child, not just for the sake of having children, but to have an heir and secure the throne. Both Patience and Verity almost blame themselves, Patience for her fertility issue, Verity for his virility issues. Having children is not an isolated choice, it's deeply political.
One of the main factors that distinguishes the world of ROTE from ours is that having sex and having children are inextricably linked. It's established that, unlike our modern world, there is no safe, reliable, and ethical method of birth control. Starling almost dies having an abortion. Molly makes herself ill to avoid conceiving. The only reliable method is a wizardwood charm (which I would have to make a whole post about the implications of that). But for most women in ROTE, the only method of birth control is abstinence. And of course, that doesn't always work. So for the women of ROTE, the choice isn't between having sex or having children, because everytime they have sex they are taking on the risk.
That's laid out very explicitly in the RWC with Thymara. She chooses to remain celibate, because in that context, it would be incredibly dangerous for her to get pregnant. She lambasts the men around her who don't see the risk women take one during copulation. This is a repeated theme we see with Molly and Fitz. He just sees the love they have, and doesn't recognize that by choosing to be together, he is harming her health.
This specific narrative choice of women always becoming mothers is a consequence of the worldbuilding. But it is also depicted with a lot of variety. Some women feel diminished by motherhood. Some feel completed by it. But motherhood is shown to be a unique privilege of ROTE's cisgender women.
One of the most interesting moments that defines Fitz's character isn't talked about often. It's during the Pale Woman's seduction. With Skill and drugs, she tries to manipulate him. She reaches into his soul and pulls out his deepest desires. She offers him power, and he is unmoved. She offers him knowledge, and he still is unswayed. But she identifies his one true desire, his biological and philosophical imperative. He wants a baby.
If women as mothers is one side of the coin, the other side is men as absent fathers. By choice, coercion, or circumstance, many of the prominent men are unable to raise their own children. Chivalry, Verity, Fitz, Chade, Burrich, Beloved. It's tragic and deliberate, and I would argue it's queer.
Some of the most famous works of queer literature are preoccupied with the unique ability of cisgender women to bring forth life, and the ability of heterosexual couples to combine themselves to create a child. Despite all our scientific advances, there is still no way to do that for a same-sex couple. ROTE has many foster parent-child relationships, and they're often very fulfilling. But they're often also bittersweet.
I truly think that this motif is to show a kind of profound yearning for children in a conventional family. Consider the fact that the absent fathers of ROTE all have elements of queerness, breaking the rules of social conduct. Chivalry had a bastard, as did Fitz and Chade. Verity used his nephew's body to conceive a child he claimed. Fitz and Chade are both assassins. Burrich and Fitz are both Witted. And Beloved is trans/gnc. Breaking these social rules incurs punishment. And the way they are punished is by not being able to raise their children.
And so I think the most likely conclusion of all this is that Robin Hobb might just really like kids and value the experience of having them. And I don't think that makes her an anti-feminist. She depicts many types of families and many types of mothers and fathers with complex characters and dynamics. To point at one shared motif, is, in my opinion, cherrypicking.
But I'm still developing my thoughts on this, so let me know if you have anything to add.
Fitz I am challenging you to describe your best friend in a straight chill way for one single sentence of this first person narrative bro
“After I leave you here, will I ever see you again?”
“Probably not. It would not be wise.”

Then, looking at the Fool sitting hunched over the fire, I realized that, though we had been boys together, we were not boys together now, and we never would be boys together again. In many ways I longed to be a boy with him again, longed for the simplicity of Molly in my bed and the Fool outside my door with Ratsy. None of it had been simple, truly, but it had felt simple, to play the role of a strange boy near a beautiful girl and a loyal friend.
I pictured it again, that easy fondness of the Fool near the close affection of Molly that I had earlier imagined, both of them grown, and I found I could not fit any version of them into that frame unless I imagined them as Lady Redskirts and the court jester. We had simply all grown out of those lives, as all children must. He had been right. I would have to choose between them. And I would.
“Then no,” I said. “No, I will not leave you. Never again.”
“Fitz,” he pleaded, looking back up into my eyes. “Please. I have seen your happiness, and I fought with everything I’m me to give you the means to go to it. I could not bear you letting that work go to dust. You told me of your promise to Burrich, and I have seen you with Molly, returned to the life you have long been denied. You must return. We must both return to the things we left behind.”
For a moment, I imagined it, Molly and I in the field behind the cabin she had shared with Burrich, caring for her horses and learning her children. My heart strained, just for a moment.
“I do love her, Fool. I do,” I huffed, much like Nighteyes when he could not force a point through to a thought human enough for me to understand. “The love I feel for her… I feel it with more passion than I have in years. I feel it with the newness of a man much younger than I. It is a young man’s love that I gave away, and a young man’s love that you have returned to me. But I am not that man anymore. I have not been that man for a very long time.”
I paused, weighing my next words on my tongue, and in my heart, which the Fool had set to beating again, just as I had returned life to his. “I fear that I have not been able to let her go because I have never been able to acknowledge that I have never been that man. It is only now, because of you, because of what you’ve given me beyond your time, as you say, that can leave the past where it belongs.”
I rested my hand on the side of his neck and jaw, tipping his head back to face me, as it had been steadily tilting downwards as I had spoken.
In that brief moment I had inhabited his body, and he mine, and in the even briefer infinity in which we had held each others’ spirits in one breath, mingling, I had understood him as I had never before. I had understood that regardless of his physical body, he was only a man as much as I was a wolf, or, more accurately, as much as I was a serving man or a prince or a warrior, roles that suited me in many moments but that did not represent the whole of who I was. He was too expansive to be confined by our petty labels—our plumbing, as he had always said—and was so shifting and changeable, so prismatic, that his body had accepted a process of change as something natural that he must endure. Each time he emerged from this change, he emerged more beautiful—not because he was ever less strange or unnerving, but because each time he had come more into himself.
In that moment of understanding, I had also come to understand myself, though I feared it would take some days still to accept it. Just now, I had voiced objections to bedding him, but those objections no longer held the weight they once did in my heart, and were spoken more out of habit than anything. The regret of those words was striking even as I had said them. He had continued our well-worn discussion by stating that those objections were of no consequence, and I now believed him so fiercely that my thoughts would go beyond his imagining.
After you have shared another’s soul, and experienced their body as if it were your own, what is the sharing of bodies in a context more pleasurable? I had come to an understanding that bedding, for me, had always been a deepening of connection, whether that be friendship or romance. I had no way of knowing if this connection would not have extended to men if I had ever chanced to befriend one well enough. My thoughts were briefly soured by the reminder that I had never had the companionship of men my own age or stature to truly know them.
But, as he met and held my gaze, that ire dissipated, like water on the hot rocks of the steams back at buckkeep. His eyes were shifting as steadily as the rest of him, and right now, one still held the liquid gold that had been a flame to the many moths of royal court, a color I had as much trouble meeting as every other color his gaze had been. Had it ever been discomfort with his strangeness that had warded me off, or something else, within myself, the gaze of which i could not meet? Had it always been his beauty that I blanched at? His other eye was the pale brown of new tree bark, lit from within, a spring day shining with life, new life, straining against the sun and the still-cold wind of an ending harsh winter.
“I will fulfill my promise to Burrich, as Molly’s friend, if she will allow it, after so many years. My young man’s heart breaks to say it, but I cannot replace his role in her life, in their children’s lives. Molly will not be passed back and forth as though she has no heart of her own in the matter.” He opened his mouth to protest that that had not been what he meant, but I continued before he could gather the breath.
“And besides, you are wrong. You say that if we returned together, that I would have to choose between you. But, Beloved, the choice has been made. I made my choice, my change, when I gave my life to you. I accepted your death. you cannot take it back from me. I will not claim ownership over the time you have left, but I do claim the right to witness it. If, as you say, my ability to love Molly again is only due to your actions beyond death, how can you claim that your presence is not the thing keeping the world turning, afterwards?”
He had flinched when I said his name, and it grieved me deeply, but I could not retract it, and by the end of my speech he was gaping, brows furrowed in uncertainty. I tried something else.
“FitzChivalry,” I said. “Come home.”
He closed his eyes then, and I felt something flare through the Skill-bond, a hope so bone-deep that the weight and relief of it nearly frightened me.
“I wish it had not been her to tell you of that custom,” He sighed, closing his eyes. “Let that knowledge be the only thing we take from her beyond that cave.”
He stood, and, instead of coming closer, made the slow trek to his bed, where he lay down without another word. He was not happy, yet, but I made a promise to myself that he would be. I had won, and one day, he would be happy. We would return, and I would make him happy.
“May I join you?” I said, the words leaving my mouth without any consideration. I had spent days now sleeping apart from him, and I missed it. I missed him every moment we were apart. He was quiet, and I feared that he would continue to deny me, and himself. I could not fault him, after what he had been through.
He sighed once more, his shoulders rising and falling where he lay, his back turned to me and the dying firelight. After a moment, he turned onto his back, then twitched out of the position, having forgotten his still raw back. He settled into his other side, light flickering once more over his face. He nodded, just barely, and I leapt up to cross the room in quick strides, before he changed his mind. I sat gingerly on the edge of the pallet to remove my boots. He watched me with a befuddled and worried expression. I longed to smooth out his brow, and to honor that honesty of thought, I reached out and did so, setting my hand to the side of his face and dragging a thumb over his forehead.
He sighed. I was beginning to understand that I would be hearing this sound frequently until I could convince him fully of my intentions. He leaned into my hand all the same. “You aim to make my heartbreak as difficult as possible to withstand,” he said.
“No,” I stated, as resolutely as I could muster. “I aim to convince you heartbreak is unnecessary.”
At this, I land down to press a kiss to his forehead, then his cheek. I moved my hand to lay over his heart, and feeling it rattle against his ribcage as though it would burst out, holding the wonder of our mutual resurrection in my own, I leaned to press my mouth tenderly to his. He gasped, though it was chaste and had come with more warning than he had ever given me. I pulled back, but rested my forehead against his, where I felt it must belong, where I wished it could live, forever. Hope and fear flared again through our bond, and I lay down beside him, reaching for his hand and gripping it tightly in mine. He said nothing more, and neither did I. I do not know if either of us slept, but I do know that we made it to morning, the first morning of the rest of our lives, the first morning of many in which time was completely our own.
