people calling ilya toxic in the early years of his and shane’s situationship are missing the fact that the toxicity and instability are ironically what kept their relationship afloat in those early years.

because shane was so deeply in denial about his sexuality, so full of self hatred and repression that for 7 years he was hooking up with ilya as well as hating the idea of being with women and having horrible sex with rose and STILL didn’t allow himself to consider the fact he might be gay.

he needed rose, a person outside of the hyper masculine hockey world to hold his hand and tell him it’s ok.

if ilya had been super lovey dovey and wanting to have an actual relationship with shane from the get go, shane would not have agreed.

lying to themselves about how “it’s just convenient sex” was what kept them coming back to each other.
