This Poet Helped Beyoncé Craft the Narrative of “Lemonade”
Our 2015 look at Warsan Shire, London’s first Young Poet Laureate:
Shire’s work, she has said, is a project of “documentation, genealogy, preserving the names of the women came before me. To connect, honor, to confront.” But it’s her documenting of the present, always coming back to the subject of love and its many tender and punishing forms, that is enthralling.

We Need To Talk About: Zayn Malik
‘We Need To Talk’ is a new series of music related think pieces here on Slippingbeneaththesound. Look forward to more in the future! ______________________
Zayn Malik, former member of brit-pop sensation One Direction, is releasing his first solo record this coming week. Why should we care about some former boy band dropout?
Because he’s dropping some of the hottest pop/RnB tracks around right now, at least on the radio.
Zayn has already released 4 tracks off his forthcoming debut Mind of Mine and I’m losing /my/ mind. Supported by Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange producer Malay, these songs are nothing to sleep on. Maybe you’ve already heard hit “Pillowtalk”, currently one of my favorite songs of 2016. If “Pillowtalk” is unconvincing then one of his other three, “It’s You”, “Like I Would”, or “Befour” may do the trick. Each track sounds relatively removed from the previous, production being one of the few common threads. This variation of sounds is no surprise from the mind of Malik, who has spoken at length about reaching beyond traditional pop production for a more eclectic, cool record than his 1D past. What’s really impressive are his vocals. How 1D managed such success without fully tapping into Malik’s vocal prowess is shocking. Armed with a silky falsetto and a slick yet lazy vocal style, he reaches from his boy band past and uses his voice as an instrument to push the melody to a higher plane. I’m talking harmonies, and lots of them. “Befour” is a perfect example. This The Weeknd meets Justin Timberlake tune cruises along with pulsating synths and a sensual pounding rhythm. These two elements, the vocals and music, work perfectly juxtaposed, battling for dominance. There are of course fair and credible critiques that could be made for what material has been released, but it’s too early to be picking the bones of a project still in the womb. For the potential Zayn is exhibiting, he’s earned any benefit of the doubt.
You can write Malik off as a former boy-bander looking for his own 15 minutes, of you can realize he truly doesn’t give a damn about what labels his naysayers have already pinned him as. He’s breaking out of his cage with near flawless execution.
Mind of Mine is out this Friday, March 25th, 2016.
