From the very beginning, Sloane’s life was an utter calamity. June Larsson’s pregnancy was far from an easy one. already dealing with two teenage sons, her third child was unexpected, but loved all the same. Discovering she was pregnant once again in her early fifties, the doctors informed her of the risk this birth would be. But she and her husband agreed everything happens for a reason, and knew they had to keep their first baby girl. Seven months into the pregnancy, June was experiencing contractions far from normal. She was rushed to the hospital, and doctors decided it would be best for June to be induced into early labor. After ten long hours, Sloane Larsson was brought into this world two months early, and as she took her first breath, her mother took her last.
June’s death wasn’t easy on anyone. Sloane only knows her mother from the pictures and diary entries she left, as her family refuses to speak of her. Rationally, the Larsson’s know June’s death wasn’t Sloane’s fault, but it’s easier to blame the girl than accept the fact she’s gone. It wasn’t as if Sloane received abuse growing up, she was just ignored. While her brothers and father went on trips, she was sent to her Grandma’s for the weekend, in which the women did nothing but sleep and occasionally make dinner. During her lonely years, she spent her time writing – a passion her mother possessed and Sloane soon adopted as her own. Every since she could read, she’s had a plethora of novel ideas she has yet to actual bring to life. Sloane’s pieces of writing mainly consist of poetry, and the occassional movie script.
Her brother’s rarely interacted with her. But the times they did were never good. Siblings are supposed to look after one another, and that was true for the elder two, but it was almost as if Sloane wasn’t even considered a person to them. She didn’t live the life of a tragic Cinderella story, but rather one of a doll who’s been forgotten on a shelf with no other purpose to gather dust. Complaining was something Sloane never liked to do, so instead, she accepted.
Her teenage years were easier once she began working and providing another minimum wage income for her family, but their treatment towards her didn’t change. Sloane was still the black sheep in a family who was already far from normal. At sixteen, most girls her age were planning on becoming doctors or lawyers after high school. Sloane had no plan. That was until her neighbor, Gregor Cormier, offered her an apprentice. Despite how strange it may have sounded, Sloane jumped at the opportunity. For once in her life she was being given a chance to make something of herself. It was only cruel fate for her to begin interning at Cormier’s Funeral Home, the exact place that took care of her mother after her passing. The quaint business only saw enough activity to keep it barely alive, which was good enough for Sloane. She’d always prefer to stay in the shadows, and as a Mortician, she’d practically be the one making them.
Following Gregor’s death two years ago, Sloane has been in charge of the funeral home ever since. She spends most of her days there, even during the time she’s not working. She’s never been one to posses many fears, but even Sloane can admit it’s a bit uneasy being alone at night surrounded by nothing but the deceased. Still, she finds her clients to be an outlet of sort. She can tell them all her problems, and they’ll never judge her. Sloane hasn’t spoken to her father or brothers since she was twenty, but she figures they’ll come to her in one form or another – either with or without a heartbeat.
Sloane has always kept to herself. Besides, when every aspect of yourself is ridiculed for a majority of your life, it’s how one survives. She may keep her head down, but that doesn’t mean she’s naive. In fact, Sloane’s far from it. She’s quite sophisticated and well aware of the world around her, always informed about the latest news and occasional gossip forming around town. That doesn’t mean she’ll ever partake in it, but it’s fun to be in the loop. Getting close to people is a skill she’s never been quite good at, and is therefore regarded by others as being cold, and on occasion, off putting. She’s definitely got a dark sense of humor that isn’t for everybody. Sloane would love to finally begin to get open up more with others, but her fear of rejection gets in the way almost every time.
