Muddied Waters

Heavy rainfall led to a landslide in southern Illinois early Friday. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency for central Rapids County, including the town of Muddy Waters. Areas downstream of Lakewood, including residences and businesses, were evacuated Friday morning. 

Residents have been granted temporary housing in the nearest town of Chicago until they are permitted to return. The government will provide lodging at Value Inn & Suites for those who need it, but officials strongly urge residents to stay with family and friends if possible. The Reed Waterfront Resort has also offered housing at a discounted cost, but the government will not waive the fee.

Due to limited resources, families have been placed together, and those without relatives have been paired with a roommate. Each room contains two beds, a TV, a bathroom, and small kitchenette. Those with children will share a suite with one other family. Suites contain a full kitchen and shared bathroom. The Rapids County Sheriff’s Office will occupy the first floor.

A carnival. Penelope could remember a time when she would’ve jumped at the chance to attend a carnival with her friends, even a themed one. They would make fun of the campiness while still enjoying the rides and the food they all swore they wouldn’t eat but ate anyway. Her best friend had even won her a giant teddy bear. She’d kept on her window seat where she could look at it and remember that day. She wondered now if it was still there. Probably not. She expected her father to have thrown all her things away by now.

She didn’t intend to go to this carnival. She didn’t need the memories it might dredge up. But she found herself with nothing better to do, and so she wandered through the flashing lights and the decently sized crowd, listening to the music and noise and chatter around her. There were couples, of course, but also plenty of single people enjoying the sights and games. It was loud, but she’d anticipated that. She tried to not let it bother her, knowing her only alternative was the deafening silence of her apartment.

Stopping to observe someone attempt the bottle game, she shook her head at their failure. “It’s rigged,” she informed them. “They have poles under the bottles to keep them from all falling over.” 

The booth vender gave her a dirty look, which she ignored.

What was a supposed night of merriment and drinking quickly turned sideways, when shit began to happen. One minute, everyone was losing themselves in the Halloween spirit. The next, screams began to emerge from the crowd, as flames began to erupt. And in an old, partially-wooden Asylum, flame was not your friend. 

Though Evanessence had had a few drinks, all sense of insobriety was forcefully pushed away, as she kicked her senses into overdrive. She was a second-in-command, damn it, and the townsfolk needed to be saved. A brief moment of processing was all it needed, before she began to yell amidst the screams, telling people to get out, before realising that at least half of these party-goers were either drunk or high.  

The brunette was tottering in her stilettos heels, trying her best to run around (or fast walk, for that matter), and look for those who needed help amidst the inferno that was the Asylum.

This was certainly not the kind of party Cole was used to. The parties he attended in Chicago tended to be much more black tie and champagne than abandoned asylum and broken windows. Things could get rough or dangerous occasionally but that was to be expected when so many people known for being dangerous gathered in one place. Still, there was much to be learned from an illicit party thrown in the middle of nowhere by the Rascals and he was sure to be there. It was a fitting setting for a Halloween party, he’d give them that. It was in his nature to scope out the entirety of a building he was going to be in for any length of time so he was walking around the auditorium when he came upon another person. The knight costume he’d chosen was privately amusing, since Cole was anything but knightly, though to most in this town who he’d come off to as very charming, they would probably think it was fitting. It benefited him to maintain that idea. Accordingly, his words were charming and jovial. “If you’re scared and need an escort through the building, I’m happy to oblige.”

After a rocky couple of months and a nasty round with the Sheriff’s Office, Chess Club is open for business once again. The untimely death of Soren Rockwell, while tragic, left a hole in the lives of his more colorful patrons. Thankfully, Sloan Martin rose to the occasion as soon as she was able. Whisperings began to circulate about a competition at her garage: Soren’s old brawlers would take on Chess Club’s loyal members as an induction of sorts. 

There was no better way to honor Soren’s legacy and his long-running rivalry with Sloan than to stage a one-on-one style tournament between her loyal patrons and his newly-displaced clientele. The initial rumblings of gossip shared the same concrete similarities: the event would be taking place on March 16th and any contenders needed to put their name in the running before Thursday. Separate brackets would exist for men and women, refreshments would be available for purchase, and any non-competition fighting will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Concession stands: From corn dogs to funnel cakes, the stands offer a variety of indulgent treats. Rest your tired feet in the picnic area to enjoy them with your (in)significant other. In addition to classic carnival food, there’s also the unexpected menu option of filet mignon and seasoned green beans.
