Ya know, getting to this part initially threw me for a loop. I didn't remember Orochimaru's tears from previous read or watch-throughs and wasn't sure what to make of it but when I think about it

And when I think of Hiruzen's words here, about how Orochimaru has neither "motives nor purpose," I cant help but wonder how true those words are

Or if it's Orochimaru who is to be believed

Or maybe neither are reliable narrators.

And maybe if Hiruzen had been more attentive to his pupil, more attentive to a child struggling through "malice and ambition," maybe all of this could have been prevented.

And it keeps making me think of these cycles we speak about throughout the series, and in this case the direct parallel that can be drawn between Orochimaru and Hiruzen and Sasuke and Kakashi. Hiruzen failed Orochimaru by ignoring the budding hatred within him just as I feel Kakashi fails Sasuke by doing much of the same.

Sure, he tells Sasuke not to rely on hatred, but what else could fuel his pursuit of Itachi? Whether from the curse mark or not, Sasuke doesn't need someone to bolster his revenge mission, he needs empathy and community, he needs the love thats been taken from him to heal his heart and guide his path away from the darkness.

Maybe then things would turn out differently, but sadly we know where this goes.
