WEEK 9 POST

The multimodal text that I have chosen for this week prompt is a video created using the app ‘ToonTastic’, to tell a story. I chose this multimodal text as it allows students to create a visual of what their story would look like, choosing a background with characters, as well as the audio element, of students being able to tell the story over the visual. Toontastic also breaks down the story into sections of beginning, middle and end, educating students on the relevant sections a narrative requires. 

I would use this app in the classroom as a tool for students to utilise to present their stories, such as narratives, in a creative way, rather than doing a powerpoint or a poster. This allows them to channel their creative side, as well as developing their technology skills. 

Students are then able to present these to their teacher, peers, and families and receive feedback.

WEEK 8 PROMPT

Attached is my audio about the reading assessment of running records, outlining what a running record involves and a challenge I believe could potentially arise when completing a running record in the classroom.

WEEK 7 PROMPT

My personal goal for this trimester in ECL310 was to become educated on the different parts of speech, confidently knowing the definitions of nouns, verbs, adjectives etc., and I wanted to be able to decipher between each when analysing students writing.

The first resource that has assisted me in achieving this goal is a Youtube Channel. This Youtube channel is by a man named Andrew Carter. Andrew creates videos about the English language, and an example of a specific one I watched and utilised were ‘Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives & Adverbs - An Animated Explanation’. This video was helpful to me as it explained each of these in simplistic terms, in an engaging way. Andrew has several videos that example parts of speech that I watched, as well as having ‘quiz’ videos that you can watch and use to test your knowledge. (IMAGE 1) I used the videos on this youtube channel to educate myself on the meaning of parts of speech, as well as completing assessment task one, when analysing students work.

The second resource I used to assist in my achievement of this goal was a website titled ‘Grammar Revolution’. This website introduces each of the 8 parts of speech and then goes into further detail in each. The creator, Elizabeth O’Brien, breaks down the parts of speech in simplistic terms and provides extensive examples of each in sentence forms. The site also provides tips on how to remember what term relates to what definition. I used this resource frequently to deepen my understanding of the eight parts of speech, and as a guide to refresh myself when completing assessment task 1, analysing students work.

WEEK 3 PROMPT

A resource I found that contains quality children's literature is the Love Reading site.

The Love Reading site provides a vast range of literature for children. The site has sections for specific age groups, to ensure the book is appropriate and suitable for the readers. The site also has sections for fiction or non-fiction books, that include a list of categories that might interest children such as animals, computers, adventure etc. The site also contains a whole list of books the creators of the sites recommend themselves, as well as a list of awards, which you can click into and see which books have won.   

The site also has a ‘kid-zone’ which includes activities, polls and competitions to get engage children whilst looking on the site. 

Overall it is an easy-to-use site that is extremely informative, which I believe will come in very useful in my teaching career.

WEEK 2 PROMPT

I created this poster as I thought it would be a useful tool for students if they’re ever unsure of when they are supposed to use a capital letter in their writing. Instead of disrupting the classroom teacher and asking the question, they can look up to the poster and use it as a visual reminder of whether a letter needs capitalisation or not. 

From my experiences on placement, I believe this poster would benefit all year levels in their writing, being a useful tool accessible for all writing lessons.

WEEK 1 POST 

A book series that I loved to read as a child was the Geronimo Stilton series. The series is about a mouse, Geronimo, who is the best selling author who works as a journalist and editor for the newspaper The Rodents Gazette. Each book in the series followed Geronimo on an adventure, whether that be to a new location, to find treasure, to meet someone famous etc. What I especially loved about reading these books is the way the text was presented, as pictured above, particular words were emphasised in a certain font or colour, to represent its meaning. This made the text exciting and aesthetically pleasing to read, keeping me engaged rather than seeing a large chunk of text, and dreading to have to read through it. 

Being read to in class by the teacher was an enjoyable experience for me, loving the way the teacher would use a range of expressions and voices to represent different characters. It made listening to the story stimulating, with all students listening intently, rather than being distracted, fidgeting etc. I feel as though this will influence me when I am teaching literacy, in understanding that the teacher motivation regarding the lesson, can rub off on students. That motivation particularly can include the way a text is read, such as in quirky, unique voices, rather than monotone and with lack of interest.
