South of Marketย Janet Delaney 1978-86
South Market orย โSoMoโ is an area of San Francisco now considered a major hub for the tech-boom. The gentrification of this area has been swift and unkind. In the late 1960s many Artists, Bohemians and Small business owners flooded the area for its cheap rent. Eventually operating as a diverse working class.
Then sidelined and disposed of by Silicon Valley. Houses literally bulldozed and entire communities moved on; making way for some of our biggest tech giants. โI did not intend these large-format colour images to be a romantic representation of the past. Rather, I wanted them to be a testimony to the people who were moved out, the neighbourhoods that were destroyed, and the jobs that were lostโ, explains Delaney.
The South of Market series investigates the cost of such progress. Modest in her intentions, Delaney statesย โBy looking back we can consider what was lost and what has been gainedโ.
