Addicted to Pleasure: Whisky Uisge-beatha!
Why You Should Be Drinking More Whiskey (if you're an adult) Hmmmm. OH RLY?

A list of organic whisky distilleries. I'm not sure how accurate or up-to-date this list is. But it's a start.
Interesting modern social website for whiskey.

How to Make a Wooden Viking-Style Beer Mug
Kind of large for a whiskey.
Very cool video introducing The City Foundry and their project Industry City Distillery in Brooklyn, NY.
The two-story brick building in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard that houses Kings County Distillery is still topped with a sign designating its original occupant, the base’s Paymaster. The structure’s historic feel is fitting, as it now houses the oldest distillery in New York. That claim is somewhat spurious, since prohibition-era laws preventing the establishment of distilleries in the city (and the various riots they used to incite) were only overturned in 2009. But Colin Spoelman and David Haskell, the owners of Kings County, wasted no time in moving Spoelman’s moonshine operation from his apartment into more legal environs as soon as they had the chance, and, having been in continuous operation since 2010, the title of oldest operating distillery is now officially theirs.

This isn't whiskey. Not even close. But can't you see a liquor bottle design that look like this? Would it make you want to buy it?
Modern Whiskey Brand Design
I love retro brand styles of all kinds. There is something really cool about using old communications styles and illustration from days gone by in modern products. It's something the early twenty-first century does. It's our look back mix-up culture. But with retro bands comes a lot of baggage. A lot of thoughts and ideas from regions, countries, gender, age, race, and more. I'm guessing that many large liquor companies believe their marketing departments when they tell them the demographic information about their customers. So using retro styles may really appeal to people and result in sales. Some reports I've read say that expensive whiskey sales are really on the upswing. Those brands tend to have a high class upscale feel to them. Retro brands fits well with that. So what place does modern design style have in current whiskey products? By modern I mean the term in the art history context and in the a contemporary art context. Think Charles and Ray Eames and graffiti. Two very different styles. The first is from the middle 20th century and the later is from right now on the street. What they share is a forward thinking concept that doesn't look back towards Victorian times with any longing. I'd say right now, without any real sales or demographic numbers, that the time is ripe for very modern design to be used on whiskey bottles and advertising. The rise of the micro-distillery which is blowing up all over the US will fuel this. Sure young folks will love the trustworthiness of old retro designs. Just look at how they've embraced Pabst Blue Ribbon. But eventually some people who don't drink vodka will prefer a whiskey brand that speaks to their urban lifestyle and preferences. Old grandpa may not represent that. Respect and love to you Granddad.
Whiskey 101: A Blind Tasting (by Across The Bar)
A lot of good information about whiskey in this video. If you have the patience for the massive amounts of fat b-roll footage in between the meat. I'll be going to The Flatiron Room next time I'm in NYC. :)
