I've finally made a sideblog to have a nice place to put all my lyric translations that I've worked on and accumulated over the years.

I will mostly be translating songs that I like lol. I have a huge backlog of Oomori Seiko translations, so that will likely be the bulk of it for now.

I've been translating Japanese songs since before I even started learning Japanese; however...I AM NOT AN EXPERT! Please feel free to offer corrections or different interpretations!

That being said I do translations meant to capture the meaning of the lyrics, without translating literally word for word. So words in the Japanese lyrics may not be present in my translation, or I may not use the equivalent grammar used in the original Japanese .This is all on purpose!

悪魔のキッス Kiss from a Devil Alternate Translation Discussion

As mentioned in my previous post, I'm sharing some lines I couldn't help but connect with the real life circumstances surrounding the song - 

最後の最後のpsycho連チャン; This is the last of the last of your regular psychotic meltdowns  -  This song came out less than a year after the audio recording of Oomori Seiko’s verbal abuse, so this line was the first moment where I was sure this song was a disparaging song about her. Without this context, I may have translated this as  “This is the last of the last of my regular psychotic meltdowns” 

Night速攻謝罪ネカます; At night you put me to sleep with a hasty apology - First of all, ネカますnekamsu is not a word; the 2 closest matches are ネカマ nekama, a person who pretends to be a different gender online, or 寝かす nekasu, to put to sleep. Neither are a perfect match in terms of how it’s written, but after consulting with my Japanese teacher who also had no idea what this meant, I went with “to put to sleep”. This choice was influenced firstly by context of the sentence (“Night” is in the lyric, night and sleep go together) but also by the context of the situation of an emotionally abusive person making an insincere apology to keep up appearances, diffuse a situation, or shut down criticism. At the time the song was released, this lyric may have called to mind Seiko’s apology regarding her verbal abuse of Maro. As of March 2023, this cuts even deeper, given the sloppy, vague, and insincere “reconciliation” statement put out by METAMUSE as part of the terms of their lawsuit with Kanano. An alternate translation would require someone to tell me what ネカます means…

３２１で迷子になるね 無敵 無敵; 3,2,1 and now you’ve become just a small confused child. You’re invincible, invincible - The elephant in the room in this lyric is 無敵 muteki, invincible which is the name of Oomori Seiko’s acoustic self-cover album released in 2017. Still, it is a common Japanese word and may be a coincidence. To me, this stanza depicts the speaker dealing with someone who is refusing to have a conversation with them by acting stupid, which forces the speaker to concede. This type of “invincibility” is just manipulation. Using the name of one of Seiko’s albums while describing this kind of scenario feels pointed, especially paired with the sarcastic and biting tone of voice Katy uses to sing this lyric. An alternate translation could again switch the subject of the sentence; “3,2,1 and now you’ve become just a small confused child. I’m invincible, invincible” 

Hate youコントロール支配領域; Hate you! And your “control” of that "zone" - This is the one line that I saw someone acknowledge as being a direct reference to ZOC. 支配領域 shihai ryouiki is Japanese for the gaming term zone of control, abbreviated as yep, ZOC…which you may recognize as the phrase Seiko used to name her idol group (except turned on its head as Zone Out of Control). In the lyrics, the katakana English word コントロール contorooru, control is used before 配領域 shihai ryouiki, so it would be literally “Control, zone of control”. The repetition and katakana emphasizes the concept of “control”, and using the Japanese term for “zone of control” is a subtle but crystal clear indicator of the person who is being sung about, at least in this stanza. I used quotation makes in my translation to attempt to retain that sarcastic, bold, and cheeky vibe.  An alternative translation (that would be ignoring all context and would be without any nuance) could be “Hate you, you control your Zone of Control.”

Note on an upcoming translation

Later today I will be posting a translation of Akuma no Kiss, a song released by ex-ZOC members Senritsu Kanano and Katy on April 1st 2022 as part of an April Fools’ Day joke.

Before I post my translation, I want to talk about how my feelings regarding the context of the release of this song have undoubtedly influenced my translation. Most of my other translations likely suffer from varying degrees of personal bias, but I felt like it was important to go into detail about this song in particular. This is because this song seems to me to be based on the artists’ real life experiences: experiences that have been publicized, that I have read about in detail, and about which I have strong feelings. 

From the time of the song’s release, I’d had a feeling it was about the two womens’ experiences with Oomori Seiko while members of ZOC, but I didn’t take a closer look at the lyrics, and didn’t listen to the song much because after coming to ‘peace’ with how I felt about Seiko’s tirade on Maro, it gave me cognitive dissonance to engage with negative views on Seiko. However, since the recent “settlement” of Kanano’s lawsuit, I decided to listen again. I saw Kanano cry on her Instagram live, and I felt like I couldn’t keep burying my head in the sand regarding Seiko’s actions. When I took a closer look at the lyrics, I was blown away by how obviously, in my eyes, this song was ‘calling out’ Oomori Seiko. 

I went into this song with an assumption regarding what the thesis statement of the song was (“Working with Oomori Seiko was hell”), and this undoubtedly shows in my translation. I read it only as it relates to the life and experiences of the artist, and not as a pop song for a broad audience. The truth is, I haven’t come across much discussion about the song’s lyrics, and how unabashedly they seem to reference real life events. So, either it’s so obviously a diss track that people don’t need to say anything, or, it is totally possible that the lyrics aren’t actually that egregious, and that my translation is effectively fanfiction - my interpretation of a situation I didn’t live through. 

To attempt to alleviate this, I’ll make another post showing examples of lyrics that were particularly difficult for me to look at in a vacuum, and when possible providing alternate translations that attempt to separate the lyrics from the events surrounding it. You can make your own judgements based on what you know about the 'drama', your understanding of Japanese, and my translation. However, I can't trust my translation of this song to be able to accurately portray the feelings of Katy and Kanano in this situation.

Whatever the case, my feelings towards Oomori Seiko have bittered a lot after translating this song through the lens of all of ZOC/METAMUSE’s history.

TRANSLATION NOTES

This song was used as the opening theme for the second season of the drama 来世ではちゃんとします (officially translated as "I will do it in the next life"). From what I've read, it's about a girl who has a lot of sex. The video I linked is the OP of the drama, which is a shortened version of the song, and features the cast lip-synching and playing air guitar to the song lol.

DT is internet slang for "virgin" (similar to incel, I guess). It comes from the word for male virgin, doutei, which, as you can see, has a D and a T lol. However this part was really confusing for me as I'm pretty sure the first DT is meant to be "downtown", based on how she sings it. I may be wrong. Also I'm not entirely sure what a DT Angel would be.

The summer triangle is that constellation or whatever that they always talk about in romantic scenes in anime. I'm assuming this is also meant to be an innuendo for some other triangle that you may lick under.

Guys this line was so hard to translate. This whole song was. I'm tired.

The units (xx per hour) weren't specified in the lyrics, I defaulted to kilometers

They're just saying "God", but I added 'above' because otherwise it seemed like God was being used as an exclamation, not a noun

TRANSLATION NOTES

[title] 天国 means 'heaven' and is pronounced 'tengoku'; 天獄 is also pronounced 'tengoku' but means 'hell'. In chinese 天獄 refers to 'the heavens and hells; devalokas and purgatories' but as far as i know this meaning doesn't exist in Japanese. I went with 'Super Heaven (and Hell)' because it kind of fits the Chinese meaning, but has the subtlety of the wordplay Seiko uses.

Setagaya is a special ward in Tokyo, the largest one.

I found this tweet purporting to have discovered the supermarket this line refers to; I don't know their source but hell, it does look kind of cool lol

These are all genres, as Seiko puts it, or subcultures, art styles, etc. that are popular or have been recently popular in Japan. City pop we all know, look up eroguro for yourself :,), jirai is a style meant to emulate a mentally unstable girl (kind of a mix between menhera and larme) and menhera is using signifiers of mental illness in your fashion music, art, etc.

This line literally means "i'm going to become a woman without pronouns" but in the context of the previous line about doing away with slogans, I decided to forego what may be a western interpretation of this line...

The title is a combination of the acronym SOS (used the same as in English, were it refers to a state of emergency) and SF, which is used to refer to science fiction in Japanese. In this interview she explains (rough translation): "through music you can create an outer space realm within yourself, where time flows differently and you can meet people you otherwise couldn't meet, etc...and that if your mental health is at such a point that you can create that world, you're probably constantly in a state of emergency"

(I believe I also read somewhere that the SO also refers to Seiko Oomori?)

[1] In the Japanese all these words share syllables/sound similar. In English, they do not.
